The Citroen Basalt, a stylish SUV coupe, has been spotted on Indian roads without any camouflage, signaling that its launch could be just around the corner. This sighting comes shortly after Citroen showcased a near-production concept version that highlighted the vehicle's distinctive coupe-like styling.
Design and Appearance
The Citroen Basalt maintains a familial resemblance to the Citroen lineup in India, including models from the C3 hatchback to the C5 Aircross SUV. However, it distinguishes itself with its backend design. It features a sharp LED tail light cluster and a steeply raked roofline that seamlessly integrates into the trunk giving it a standout appearance. Unlike the Vision concept, the production version's rear bumper omits the faux skid plate detailing, opting for a cleaner look.
Interior and Features
Inside, the Basalt shares many components and features with the C3 Aircross to benefit from economies of scale, helping to keep costs down. However, Citroen is expected to offer unique color schemes and additional features in the Basalt to enhance its premium feel and distinguish it from its siblings.
Engine and Performance
Under the hood, the Citroen Basalt will be powered by the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine found in the C3 Aircross. This engine delivers 110 PS and 190 Nm of torque and can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Notably, Citroen has decided against offering a diesel variant for the Basalt.
Market Positioning and Competition
The Citroen Basalt is aimed at both the domestic Indian market and for export to regions like South America. It will directly compete with the Tata Curvv and other SUVs in its segment such as the Maruti Grand Vitara, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, and Honda Elevate.
With its unique design and expected range of features the Citroen Basalt is poised to make a significant impact on the Indian SUV market. The model's official launch is eagerly anticipated by automotive enthusiasts and consumers alike.
