General information and overview
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is a midsize SUV designed for Indian roads, blending practicality, comfort and efficiency. It comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, available in both mild-hybrid and strong hybrid variants. The strong hybrid offers seamless power delivery, electric-like responses and best-in-class mileage, while the mild-hybrid is more affordable but less powerful. The cabin is spacious, with comfortable seating for five and a well-built interior. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and rear parking sensors. The suspension is tuned for comfort, handling rough roads with ease. The Hyryder’s design is modern, with LED lights and a dual-tone exterior. Expert opinion and recommendation
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder stands out as a compelling choice in India’s midsize SUV segment, especially for those prioritising reliability, comfort and fuel efficiency. The strong hybrid variant delivers electric-like throttle response and class-leading mileage, making it an ideal daily commuter. The cabin is spacious, with good legroom and headroom, and the suspension handles rough roads with ease. The build quality is solid, and Toyota’s reputation for durability adds to its appeal. However, the hybrid’s power tapers off at higher speeds, and the boot space is limited. The mild-hybrid version feels underpowered for highway cruising, and neither variant offers ADAS features. For city dwellers and frequent short-distance drivers, the Hyryder’s strengths far outweigh its shortcomings, but those seeking spirited performance or large luggage space may want to look elsewhere.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder stands out in India’s compact SUV segment for its strong hybrid technology, refined ride, and practicality. It delivers a smooth and comfortable driving experience, especially in city conditions, with a cabin that offers ample space for both front and rear passengers. The hybrid system is a major highlight, providing exceptional fuel efficiency and seamless transitions between electric and petrol modes. Handling is confident, with a suspension setup that copes well with India’s varied road conditions. Safety features are comprehensive, and the inclusion of AWD in select variants adds to its versatility. While the boot space is limited in the hybrid version and high-speed performance is modest, the Hyryder excels as a daily driver for families and those prioritizing low running costs. It’s a reliable, comfortable, and efficient choice for Indian buyers seeking a modern SUV with hybrid benefits.
Recent news and announcements
I've been thoroughly impressed by the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder's strong hybrid variant after putting over 15,000 km on it in just six months, zipping through city traffic and long highway stretches in India with remarkable ease. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine paired with the electric motor delivers a combined 115hp and seamless EV mode cruising at 90-100kph, yielding real-world efficiency often hitting 25-27kmpl, far surpassing my old Maruti S-Cross, especially amid rising fuel costs. Its Global C platform ensures planted handling and plush ride quality over pothole-ridden roads, with no rattles even after 25,000km, complemented by ventilated front seats that are a godsend in Delhi's scorching summers. The mocha brown-black interior feels premium over the Grand Vitara's, spacious for four adults though boot space at 273 litres pinches on family trips with luggage and our pet. Priced from Rs 12.75 lakh to 22.66 lakh on-road in Delhi, the hybrid's e-CVT shines for silent, brisk acceleration without turbo rivals' punch, backed by Toyota's unmatched reliability and low running costs. AWD petrol options add off-road prowess, making it a balanced, future-proof SUV choice in our market.
The 2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder update brings welcome refinements to this hybrid SUV I've been tracking closely in India, starting with a slight price bump to Rs 11.34 lakh ex-showroom for the base while introducing more affordable hybrid and CNG options alongside standard six airbags across the board. I appreciate the new color choices—seven monotone and four dual-tone shades—paired with the unchanged yet sharp exterior featuring LED projector headlamps, twin LED DRLs, crystal acrylic grille, and 17-inch alloys, keeping its bold stance against Creta and Seltos rivals. Inside, subtle enhancements like improved materials elevate the cabin without altering the panoramic sunroof or reclining rear seats with AC vents that make family drives comfortable. Powertrains remain a highlight: the strong 1.5-litre hybrid delivers class-leading 27.97 kmpl with 115hp combined output via eCVT, mild-hybrid petrol offers 19-21 kmpl in manual or AT guises including AWD, and CNG hits 26.6 km/kg for city efficiency. Recent additions like a tech package with ambient lighting, HUD, and dashcam add premium appeal, and sales crossing 1 lakh units confirm its reliability in our market, though the hybrid's premium positioning still demands careful consideration for value.
I've been thoroughly impressed by the 2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder updates launched in India, which elevate it as a top pick in the compact SUV segment without altering its core design. Starting at Rs 11.34 lakh ex-showroom, it now offers more affordable hybrid and CNG variants alongside the strong hybrid delivering an exceptional 27.97 kmpl ARAI mileage from its 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol-electric setup producing 91.18 bhp and 122 Nm, combined with an electric motor for seamless e-CVT efficiency. All variants now come standard with six airbags, enhancing safety in a market where rivals like Creta and Seltos charge extra, while new interior tweaks and colour options—seven monotone and four dual-tone—add premium appeal. The NeoDrive mild-hybrid petrol (103 bhp, 136.8 Nm) with manual or six-speed AT, including AWD exclusivity on AT, and CNG at 26.6 km/kg make it versatile for Indian roads, boasting 210mm ground clearance, 373-litre boot, and features like LED projectors, 17-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof, and ventilated seats in higher trims. Its Toyota-Maruti synergy ensures low running costs and reliability, making it my go-to for fuel-savvy buyers seeking hybrid prowess without compromise.
I've been tracking the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder closely in India, and the 2025 update keeps it as a top pick in the compact SUV segment with its unchanged bold design featuring LED projector headlamps, twin LED DRLs, crystal acrylic grille, and 17-inch alloys in seven monotone and four dual-tone shades. Priced from Rs 10.95 lakh to Rs 19.76 lakh ex-showroom, it now starts at a slight premium of Rs 11.34 lakh, introducing affordable hybrid and CNG variants alongside the NeoDrive mild-hybrid petrol, strong hybrid, and AWD options—all built on the reliable Maruti Suzuki platform rivaling Creta and Seltos. Standard six airbags across the board enhance safety, while interiors gain premium touches for better comfort. Powertrains shine with the strong hybrid delivering class-leading 27.97 kmpl, the CNG at 26.6 km/kg, and petrols from 19.2-21.11 kmpl from the 1.5-litre engines producing up to 115hp combined. I appreciate the mature handling, spacious cabin with 373-litre boot, and features like panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats in higher trims, making it ideal for efficiency-focused Indian buyers seeking a refined daily driver without major redesigns.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has launched special limited editions of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, along with the Glanza and Urban Cruiser Taisor, offering attractive year-end discounts and Toyota Genuine Accessories (TGA) packages. The Hyryders TGA package, valued at Rs 50,817, includes 13 accessories like body cladding, a digital video recorder, and all-weather 3D mats. Buyers can also avail year-end discounts of up to Rs 1 lakh on non-CNG variants. I think these offers make the Hyryder an even more compelling choice for those looking for a feature-rich SUV.
Pricing details and changes
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is priced in India starting from around ₹11.5 lakh for the base mild-hybrid variant, going up to ₹18.5 lakh for the top-end strong hybrid model, ex-showroom. On-road prices typically range from ₹13 lakh to ₹21 lakh, depending on the city and variant. The strong hybrid commands a premium of nearly ₹1.9 lakh over the mild-hybrid automatic, which is significant but justified by its superior fuel efficiency and seamless driving experience. Compared to rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the Hyryder is competitively priced, especially when considering Toyota’s resale value and long-term ownership costs. The higher upfront cost of the hybrid is offset by lower running expenses, making it a smart investment for those who drive frequently in city and mixed conditions.

On-road prices typically range from ₹13 lakh to ₹21 lakh depending on the variant and location, factoring in registration, insurance, and other charges. The hybrid variants command a premium, but the long-term savings on fuel and lower maintenance costs make them a smart investment for those who drive frequently. The wide range of variants ensures there’s a Hyryder for every budget, from entry-level buyers to those seeking advanced features and hybrid efficiency. The pricing is competitive within the segment, especially when considering Toyota’s reputation for reliability and resale value.
Fuel efficiency information
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s strong hybrid variant delivers exceptional mileage, with real-world figures often exceeding 20 kmpl in city driving and reaching up to 26 kmpl on highways. The mild-hybrid version offers around 15-17 kmpl, which is still impressive for a petrol SUV. For buyers focused on low running costs and frequent city commutes, the strong hybrid is the clear choice, as it significantly reduces fuel expenses and eliminates the need for diesel. The hybrid system’s efficiency makes it ideal for daily drivers and long-distance travel, ensuring fewer refuelling stops and lower overall ownership costs.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s strong hybrid variant delivers an ARAI-certified mileage of up to 27.97 km/l, with real-world figures often exceeding 20 km/l, making it one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in India. The mild hybrid version offers around 17-20 km/l, still impressive for its class. For buyers concerned about running costs, the hybrid system significantly reduces fuel expenses, especially in city driving and mixed conditions. The seamless self-charging technology means no need for plug-in charging, adding to convenience. This makes the Hyryder an ideal choice for those prioritizing low running costs and high efficiency.

Overview
Toyota is no stranger to hybridization; they pioneered hybrid technology many years ago. Toyota is now seeking to provide the technology to the masses at a reasonable price. Its relationship with Maruti Suzuki has opened doors to this hybrid tech revelation. After a few cross-badged items, Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the first true co-developed offering from their alliance.
2023 Toyota Hyryder is larger and takes on the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It also takes on the new German duo of Taigun and Kushaq. The reincarnated Maruti Grand Vitara would be its co-developed sibling. The sub-four-metre Urban Cruiser (based on the new-gen Brezza) may continue but under a different name. But Toyota has not yet revealed any specifics about it.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Design and Style
Toyota is eradicating the worn-out automobile image with each new model. The Hyryder is no exception; it has the same silhouette and majority of panels as its Suzuki equal, Grand Vitara. Hyryder appears more sleek and sophisticated in person than in photographs. It looks great in the 'Speedy Blue' dual-tone colour scheme with a glossy black upper part.
The most eye-catching feature up front is its dual daytime running LEDs. They also function as indicators and are separated by a chrome sash. The grille's pseudo carbon fibre treatment appears classy and neat. The gaping grille flanked by LED projector headlamps is reminiscent of the Glanza. It lacks fog lamps since the lights are located lower on the bumper. The bumper has a stylish dual-tone gun metal finish.
The sleek lines and extended shape of the tiny crossover make it even more appealing from the side. This is also the perspective from which it appears to be nearly identical to the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The alloys are different, and Hyryder has a more stylish set of wheels.
The back of the Hyryder appears clean and tidy. It sports stylish wrap-around tail lights with a C-shaped LED design. It lacks the attached tail lamps found in most current SUVs. Toyota should have done the same since it would have made the bargain far more compelling. They might be preserving it for a future remodel. Like the Grand Vitara, the reversing and indicator lights are mounted on the bumper. With its all-around design, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder appears chic and flamboyant.
Interior of Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder
2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder has an impressive road presence at 4365x1795x1635mm. But a little extra height would have improved its proportions. When you enter, a bright blue 'power' button greets you as an aide-mémoire to its hybrid nature. The cabin layout and design are straightforward and utilitarian rather than attractive.
There are familiar features around the cabin that have been scrounged from the Maruti Suzuki parts bin. Some of them appear to be acceptable here, while others do not. The steering wheel is nice and meaty, and the floating touchscreen responds quickly and is simple to use, especially while driving.
The plastics around the gear lever, appear simple, particularly for a car joining a competitive category. Soft-touch materials in rich brown, cover the dashboard and door pads. Also, the cleverly designed cascading dash offers a spot for your smartphone with a wireless charger at its base.
When it comes to the front seats, they are spacious and pleasant. Even the overall visibility isn't too poor. Although it is easy to climb into the back, headroom is limited. This is due to the hybrid powertrain's battery being placed underneath. So headroom is compromised, especially for taller passengers. Another disadvantage of battery placement is the reduced boot space.
There is enough room for two cabin-size luggage and a couple of duffle bags. The second-row bench's base is detachable to allow access to the battery hookups. Then there's the under-thigh support, and the legroom is more than adequate. Three people seated here would only be comfortable for short excursions.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Engine and Gearbox
The sharing of hybrid technology was part of Toyota and Maruti Suzuki's collaboration, and we get our first taste of it in the Hyryder. The engine is a 1.5-litre NA three-cylinder that has served in many Toyota models around the world. It has a max power of 92.4 HP and a peak torque of 122 Nm. A 59kW (around 80.2 HP)/141 Nm electric motor is paired with the engine and is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. The total system output is 115 horsepower, when turned on, the system starts in EV mode.
An electronic brain then decides whether to use the electric motor or the gasoline engine. This usually occurs when the battery percentage drops or the system is under increased load. Like any other powerful hybrid, there's a power flow indicator on the infotainment/MID/HUD. Despite being a three-cylinder, the engine isn't jittery when it comes to life. Because it comes on after the silent EV mode, it appears to be noisier than it is. When pushed hard enough, it does become vocal. The CVT automatic transmission performs admirably in everyday driving conditions. When you slow down, the regen system immediately begins charging the battery.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Ride and Handling
2023 Toyota Hyryder effortlessly glides around town in EV mode. The engine produces enough power to keep up with traffic and carry the Hyryder's heavier gross weight with ease. The powertrain would switch to EV mode for highway speeds on lighter throttles. Descending those odd crests or flyovers, or cruising around, even reaching triple-digit speeds. Although it can easily cruise at highway speeds all day, it becomes sluggish when pushed beyond triple-digit speeds.
Toyota offers the new Hyryder with three drive modes: Normal, Eco, and Power. But the difference in throttle response between these modes is barely discernible. There is a B mode on the gear lever after the D, which slightly increases the brake energy recuperation. As a result, the battery charges faster and the use of a gasoline engine for most driving conditions is reduced, saving fuel. When it comes to fuel economy, the claimed figure is 27.97 km/l.
2023 Toyota Hyryder's ride quality remains supple and comfortable across the majority of the surfaces. It handled rough road surfaces with grace. With large speed breakers or cobbled surfaces, the Hyryder handled them with ease. Even at highway speeds, the undulations and sudden sharp potholes or road joints are handled deftly. It can comfortably maintain highway speeds all day and does not feel shaky under hard braking. The steering has a good weight to it and responds quickly when turned two and a half turns lock-to-lock. When thrown around, there is some body movement, but it is not intended for attacking corners. At the end of the day, the Hyryder isn't particularly sporty, but it's also not dull for daily driving.
Key Features of Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder
The feature list of this top-tier Hybrid-V trim includes everything you'd expect from this segment. LED projector, DRLs, and tail lamps, 17-inch dual-tone wheels and a panoramic sunroof. A 9" touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity. Cooled front seats, auto AC, Arkamys sound system, ambient lighting, and cruise control. An air purifier, auto headlamps, a wireless charger, a 360-degree camera, a heads-up display (HUD), and an auto-dimming IRVM. The all-digital instrument cluster is well-designed and provides all the necessary information. Toyota i-Connect also includes cutting-edge connected car technology. It has six airbags, disc brakes on the rear wheels, ABS with EBD, TPMS, rear sensors, three-point seat belts for all passengers, and hill assist.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Competitors
Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, Maruti Grand Vitara, Nissan Kicks, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun are all competitors for the new Hyryder. The new Mahindra Scorpio Classic is a tough alternative as well.
Conclusion
If you're looking for a Toyota SUV that delivers serious class, elegance, comfort, and fuel efficiency, consider the Hyryder. It does not match the outright performance of its turbocharged competitors. But it delivers on what it promises: much lower fuel bills.
Besides you get a sophisticated-looking SUV with a spacious and plush interior brimming with amenities. This SUV is a great blend of everyday driving comfort and impressive fuel efficiency.
The hybrid powertrain will be simple because the hybrid powertrain (except for the battery) is now manufactured at Toyota's Bidadi plant. Sharing parts with Maruti Suzuki would also help the cause.
With the new Totota Hyryder, the Japanese automaker hopes to bring hybridization to the masses. While also capturing a piece of the lucrative C-SUV market. The Hyryder has the advantage of being the segment's first hybrid. Toyota is aiming for higher fuel efficiency, a well-equipped feature list, a large service network, and competitive pricing.
