So how does the Qashqai perform in snow and poor weather?
06 January 2025 09:32
I have the AWD version and it's been great in the snow. It's not Land Rover levels of capability, but you won't need them for bad weather or light off roading. It really helps with the extra ground clearance.

Rubbish in snow is my FWD Qashqai. With winter tires, it still struggles on hills. If you live in an area with real winters, I think you need the AWD system.
So how does the Qashqai perform in snow and poor weather?

For most conditions it is fine, but don't expect miracles. It helps with traction control, but it’s still essentially a tall hatchback. The car itself does not matter as much as good tires.
So how does the Qashqai perform in snow and poor weather?

I was surprised that mine handled a snow storm so well last year. Not a Subaru, but with decent tires it felt stable and confident. Visibility is also helped by the high driving position.

It’s more about the driver and the tires than the car. Some people get stuck in Qashqais, others breeze through in Micras. If you do know what you're doing, it's capable enough.

Mahindra, I think, have done their homework. With a local manufacturer, they know Indian conditions better than a foreign manufacturer and hence, the XEV 9e should cope with our climate just fine.

Has the popularity of the Toyota Fortuner in India more to do with status rather than automotive merit?
30 December 2024 11:03
It's definitely much more about status. It's bought to prove you've 'made it'. For the money, there are better SUVs out there, but none with the same road presence.
Has the popularity of the Toyota Fortuner in India more to do with status rather than automotive merit?
30 December 2024 11:03
Status is a part of it, but you can’t discount the Fortuner’s actual merits. There is no better value for its reliability and resale value. That's why it's popular.
Has the popularity of the Toyota Fortuner in India more to do with status rather than automotive merit?

I think it's a bit of both. I was attracted to the status at first, but I bought it for its ability and Toyota's service network.
Has the popularity of the Toyota Fortuner in India more to do with status rather than automotive merit?

The status thing is blown out of proportion. It’s a solid, dependable SUV that can handle anything, and people buy it. The image is just a bonus.
Has the popularity of the Toyota Fortuner in India more to do with status rather than automotive merit?

Let’s be honest, if there was no status, half the Fortuner owners would be driving something else. It’s less about the car, and more about the badge.
Has the popularity of the Toyota Fortuner in India more to do with status rather than automotive merit?

Its merits give it its status. It's a good, reliable vehicle, and so it became a symbol of success. That doesn't mean that the two are mutually exclusive.

I know, because I cross shopped extensively before buying and can say the Fortuner’s popularity is justified. There is a status element but it is backed by substance.
