About

General information and overview

I consider the Volvo S60 T4 Inscription a premium compact sedan tailored for India, powered by a 1969cc mild-hybrid petrol engine producing 190 bhp and 300 Nm, paired to an 8-speed automatic with front-wheel drive. Acceleration hits 0-100 kmph in about 7.9 seconds, topping 180 kmph, with drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Dynamic—fine-tuning refinement that's whisper-quiet. Suspension copes adeptly with Indian roads, stiff at low speeds but supremely stable on highways, shod in 235/45 R18 Continentals. The cabin impresses with high-quality materials, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and a 9-inch infotainment loaded with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, voice commands, and a premium sound system. Safety leads with 6 airbags, pilot assist, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alert. At 45.90 lakh ex-showroom, it rivals BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, emphasizing comfort, tech, and Volvo's safety ethos over outright sportiness—ideal for families wanting luxury without SUV bulk.

The Volvo S60 T4 Inscription is India's sole variant of this premium compact sedan, powered by a 1969 cc mild-hybrid petrol engine producing 188 bhp and 300 Nm, mated to an 8-speed automatic with front-wheel drive, hitting 0-100 kmph in about 7.9 seconds and topping 180 kmph. I love its understated Scandinavian design, spacious front cabin with supportive seats, premium materials, and tech like a 9-inch infotainment, voice commands, air purifier, and ambient lighting. Safety leads with multiple airbags, pilot assist, cross-traffic alert, and a 5-star pedigree tailored for Indian roads via adept suspension handling potholes and undulations. It glides maturely on highways with flat stability, offers decent boot space, and rivals like Audi A4 or Jaguar XE, but shines in refinement and family-friendly composure—my pick for safe, plush daily motoring without ostentation.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the Volvo S60 T4 Inscription a compelling choice for discerning buyers seeking refined luxury on Indian roads. Its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivers 190 bhp and 300 Nm with seamless refinement, making highway cruises effortless and city drives composed, though it lacks the explosive punch of a BMW 3 Series. The double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension handles potholes maturely, offering a planted "big car" feel at speed while absorbing undulations superbly on expressways. Inside, the premium cabin with leather seats, 9-inch touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bowers & Wilkins audio, and 4-zone climate control exudes Scandinavian sophistication. Safety shines with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking—hallmarks of Volvo's legacy. Ride quality improves post-low speeds, where slight stiffness is typical of European sedans, but stability is class-leading. It's not a corner-carver like rivals, with front-wheel-drive limiting dynamic thrills, yet for safe, comfortable family motoring in India, it excels without excess. At this price, it undercuts some competitors while prioritizing comfort over sportiness, making it ideal if you value understated elegance and long-distance poise over aggressive handling.

I find the Volvo S60 T4 Inscription to be a compelling choice for Indian buyers seeking premium Scandinavian luxury without the frills of excessive sportiness. Its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivers 188 bhp and 300 Nm, offering refined performance that's ample for city commutes and highway cruises, though it lacks the explosive punch of a BMW 3 Series. The cabin exudes quality with leather seats, a 9-inch touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 4-zone climate control, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, all wrapped in a safety-first ethos featuring adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking—hallmarks of Volvo's legacy that shine on unpredictable Indian roads. Ride quality impresses with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension that soaks up potholes at speed while maintaining stability, though low-speed stiffness is noticeable like most European sedans. Handling is composed for daily drives but not corner-carving sharp, prioritizing comfort over thrills. At around Rs 46 lakh ex-showroom, it undercuts some rivals while delivering unmatched safety and maturity, making it ideal for families valuing long-term ownership peace of mind over outright excitement—buy it if serene luxury trumps adrenaline.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Volvo has announced that it will be ending the production of the S60 sedan in the U.S. and some other markets by the end of June 2024. This decision is part of the companys strategy to focus on newer models like the EX90. Production will continue in other locations for different markets. I think this move reflects the shifting consumer preferences towards SUVs and electric vehicles.
June 18, 2024
For the 2024 model year, the Volvo S60 has introduced a few updates, including a new Dark exterior theme as a standard feature across all trims. Additionally, the Climate package now includes heated seats, and the Ultimate trim is only available with all-wheel drive. The high-performance Polestar Engineered model has been discontinued. I believe these changes will enhance the S60s appeal, especially with the added comfort features.
March 16, 2024
The 2024 Volvo S60 offers a plug-in hybrid option, known as the Recharge T8, which combines a turbocharged gas engine with an electric motor. This setup provides up to 455 horsepower, 523 lb-ft of torque, and an electric-only range of up to 40 miles. It also features all-wheel drive and can be charged in five hours on a 240-volt charger. I think this hybrid model is a great option for those looking for both performance and efficiency.
February 20, 2024
Volvo has confirmed that the S60 will continue to be available in three trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. Each trim offers the choice between the B5 turbocharged engine and the Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid. The Ultimate trim comes with additional features like 19-inch wheels, power-extendable seat bottoms, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. I believe the variety in trims will cater to a wide range of buyers.
January 25, 2024
The 2024 Volvo S60 has been praised for its comfortable and supportive seats, as well as its high-quality cabin materials. However, it has also been criticized for its frustrating touchscreen interface and limited trunk space compared to its rivals. The car also features advanced driver and safety aids, including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system. I think the comfort and safety features make it a solid choice for luxury sedan buyers.

Price

Pricing details and changes

I see the Volvo S60 T4 Inscription ex-showroom priced at Rs 45.90 lakh, a competitive entry into luxury sedans that positions it below BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class starters. On-road prices vary by city—expect Rs 52-55 lakh in metros like Delhi or Mumbai, factoring 10-12% road tax, Rs 3-4 lakh insurance, Rs 50,000-1 lakh registration, and minor fees; for instance, Delhi on-road nears Rs 53.5 lakh while Chennai might touch Rs 54.5 lakh due to higher taxes. These figures stem from last recorded data, so verify with dealers for 2025 updates amid potential fluctuations. As a reviewer, this pricing offers strong value: mild-hybrid efficiency aids running costs, premium features like air purifier and voice commands match pricier rivals, and Volvo's ownership perks like 3-year service packages keep totals reasonable. It's a smart buy if budgeting under 60 lakh on-road, delivering Swedish quality without the depreciation hit of German badges, though resale might lag sportier alternatives—perfect for buyers prioritizing safety and refinement over badge prestige.
December 16, 2025
In India, the Volvo S60 T4 Inscription carries an ex-showroom price of Rs 45.90 lakh, positioning it competitively against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class in the premium sedan segment. On-road prices vary by city due to taxes, insurance, and registration—for instance, in Delhi, expect around Rs 52-54 lakh including 13% road tax and insurance, while in Mumbai with higher taxes it could touch Rs 55-57 lakh; always check local Volvo dealers for precise quotes as RTO charges fluctuate. I appreciate how Volvo keeps it a single-variant play, avoiding confusion, and the mild-hybrid tech adds a slight efficiency edge without jacking up the cost like plug-in variants elsewhere. This pricing reflects premium build and safety tech, offering better value than pricier German rivals for similar power, though running costs like high petrol dependency and 18-inch Continental tyres demand budgeting for upkeep. For discerning buyers, the ex-showroom tag justifies the investment as depreciation is steady in the luxury resale market, and Volvo's 3-year/unlimited km warranty plus roadside assistance eases ownership—perfect if you're financing via EMI around Rs 90,000 monthly over 5 years at current rates, helping stretch your budget wisely.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I note the S60's ARAI-rated 14 kmpl for its mild-hybrid petrol automatic, but real-world figures in India hover at 10-12 kmpl city and 14-16 kmpl highway, impacted by traffic and AC use. Running costs stay manageable at Rs 8-10/km on premium fuel, bolstered by hybrid assistance and Volvo's efficiency tuning—viable for luxury seekers not fixated on diesel economy.
December 16, 2025
I rate the S60's ARAI-claimed 14 kmpl realistic for mixed Indian conditions, delivering 10-12 kmpl in cities and 15-16 kmpl on highways with mild-hybrid assist smoothing stops. Running costs suit premium buyers at Rs 12-15/km on petrol, lower than thirstier rivals, making it viable for 15,000 km/year usage without breaking the bank—opt for it if efficiency ranks secondary to luxury.
