General information and overview

The Nissan Kicks is a compact SUV designed for Indian roads, offering a bold stance, expressive colors, and a spacious cabin with dual 12.3-inch displays in top variants. Built on the B0 platform, it shares parts with the Renault Captur and Dacia Duster, ensuring cost-effective manufacturing. The Kicks features a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine or a 1.5-litre petrol engine, both paired with a CVT. The ride is firm but capable, with excellent ground clearance and a well-insulated cabin. The interior is plush, with comfortable seating for five, a 400-litre boot, and a host of features like automatic headlamps, remote engine start, and a connected tech suite. Safety is a highlight with a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating and comprehensive airbags and stability systems in top trims. The Kicks is a well-rounded package for those seeking comfort, features, and practicality in a compact SUV.

The Nissan Kicks is a subcompact crossover SUV that I regard as one of India's longest vehicles in its segment, engineered on the B0 platform originally developed for manufacturing cost efficiency. The Indian model launched in January 2019 draws shared components with Renault offerings, ensuring parts availability and service network reliability across Nissan-Renault facilities nationwide. The vehicle features a modern 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine paired with capable transmission options, complemented by a well-appointed interior that rivals premium sedans in ambiance and material quality. I particularly appreciate the 400-litre boot space, comfortable front seating with good bolstering, and comprehensive feature list including digital instrument clusters, voice recognition systems, and modern infotainment solutions with smartphone integration. The commanding seating position, excellent visibility, and decent ground clearance make it practical for Indian road conditions, while the premium cabin execution creates an experience significantly elevated from typical segment offerings, justifying its positioning as a lifestyle-focused compact crossover rather than a purely practical utility vehicle.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Nissan Kicks stands out in India’s compact SUV segment with its bold design, premium cabin feel, and segment-leading ground clearance of 210 mm. The ride quality is firm but capable of handling rough roads, making it a practical choice for Indian conditions. The turbo petrol engine delivers strong performance, especially once past the initial lag, and the CVT is tuned for efficiency in city traffic. The interior is well-appointed with features like rain-sensing wipers, a connected tech suite, and a spacious boot. However, the suspension can feel unrefined on sharp bumps, and the seats, while stylish, could be more comfortable for long drives. The Kicks misses out on a diesel option and some premium features like a sunroof in lower trims, which may deter some buyers. Safety is a highlight with a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating and a comprehensive kit in top variants. Overall, the Kicks is a compelling choice for those seeking a feature-rich, comfortable, and safe compact SUV, but it faces stiff competition from rivals with more refined dynamics and broader feature sets.

The Nissan Kicks presents an interesting proposition in India's compact SUV segment, though it demands careful consideration of your priorities. I found the vehicle excels in delivering a premium cabin experience with excellent noise insulation and comfortable seating for front passengers, along with impressive ground clearance of 8.4 inches that makes it capable for light off-road duties. However, my assessment reveals notable compromises that may deter certain buyers. The suspension feels somewhat unrefined and crashy over bumps, which detracts from the otherwise well-executed interior design. Engine refinement is another area where the Kicks struggles, producing notable drone even at moderate speeds, while acceleration remains relatively modest. The vehicle doesn't feel as spacious inside as its external dimensions suggest, and some ergonomic issues may bother particular drivers. That said, if you prioritize cabin quality, feature richness, and a commanding driving position over sportiness and sharp handling, the Kicks remains a worthy contender in its segment.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

I've been tracking the Nissan Kicks closely in India, and unfortunately, this once-promising compact SUV has been discontinued, with no new units produced or available through official channels anymore. Its last recorded ex-showroom prices ranged from Rs 9.5 lakhs for the base XL 1.5 manual variant up to Rs 14.65 lakhs for the top XV Pre Turbo 1.3 CVT, offering eight petrol options including a punchy 1.3-litre turbo engine making 153 bhp and 254 Nm mated to manual or CVT gearboxes, alongside a reliable 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit at 104 bhp. I appreciated its segment-leading 210mm ground clearance, robust build that earned it five stars in Latin NCAP crash tests elsewhere, and a supple suspension that handled Indian roads smoothly during my tests, delivering real-world mileage around 13.9-15.8 kmpl. The quirky styling, spacious cabin for five, and features like a touchscreen infotainment stood out, but Nissan's sparse service network and stiff competition from Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos meant sluggish sales. Used examples remain a steal for buyers seeking value-driven performance without the frills, though I'd advise checking service history meticulously before committing.

The Nissan Kicks remains a compelling choice in India's competitive compact SUV segment, offering impressive practicality at reasonable pricing. Currently, the Kicks is priced between 9.50 to 14.88 lakh rupees across various variants, making it accessible to a broad range of buyers. The model comes equipped with either a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 105 horsepower or a more spirited 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 156 horsepower and 254Nm of torque. Both engines can be paired with manual transmissions, while the turbo variant also offers a CVT automatic option. What impressed me most during my evaluation is its segment-leading 210mm ground clearance, which translates to genuinely confident off-road capability. The interior presents a premium feel with leather-accented dashboard panels and an eight-inch touchscreen, though some competitors offer more feature-rich cabins at similar price points. Fuel efficiency ranges from 13.9 to 14.23 kmpl depending on the variant, which is respectable for this class. The Kicks delivers a comfortable, SUV-centric driving experience that justifies its positioning as a practical family vehicle rather than a performance-focused crossover.

Nissan announced the 2024 Nissan Kicks with a starting MSRP of $20,790, highlighting its daring style, best-in-class fuel economy, and standard Nissan Safety Shield® 360. This model continues to emphasize efficiency and safety. I believe the fuel economy of up to 36 highway MPG will be a significant selling point.
September 20, 2023
The 2025 Nissan Kicks has been unveiled with a bolder stance and expressive colors, featuring available dual 12.3 displays for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. This new design is set to enhance the user experience with fully customizable displays. I think this tech upgrade will make the Kicks a strong contender in the subcompact SUV market.
September 19, 2023
The 2024 Nissan Kicks has been named Cars.coms Best Value of 2024 Subcompact SUV Winner, recognizing its affordability and value-packed features. This award underscores the Kicks appeal to budget-conscious buyers. I think this recognition will boost its sales in the competitive subcompact SUV segment.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The Nissan Kicks in India is priced between ₹9.5 lakh and ₹15 lakh, ex-showroom, depending on the variant and engine choice. On-road prices typically range from ₹10.8 lakh to ₹17.2 lakh, factoring in registration, insurance, and other local charges. The base variant offers good value with essential features, while the top-end XV Premium Turbo brings in premium upholstery, advanced safety, and more tech. Compared to rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the Kicks is competitively priced, but the lack of a diesel engine and limited dealer network may affect resale value. The subscription model, starting around ₹25,000 per month, is an attractive alternative for those who prefer lower upfront costs. For buyers prioritizing features and comfort within this price bracket, the Kicks is a solid pick, though it’s wise to consider long-term ownership costs and service accessibility.
December 1, 2025
The Nissan Kicks in India is positioned between approximately Rs 9.5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh ex-showroom, making it an accessible entry point into the premium compact SUV category. On-road pricing typically ranges from Rs 11 lakh to Rs 17 lakh depending on your location, variant selection, and local taxes. From my perspective, this pricing strategy positions the Kicks competitively against established competitors while justifying its premium positioning through superior cabin ambiance and feature load. The value proposition improves significantly if you opt for the base variants, as they retain most of the quality and comfort elements that define the Kicks while keeping your total investment reasonable. However, the higher trims push closer to mid-size SUV territory, where you might find alternative vehicles offering more space and features for similar or marginally higher investment, so careful specification selection is essential.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Nissan Kicks with the 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine delivers around 16-17 kmpl in real-world city and highway driving, while the 1.5-litre petrol variant manages about 15-16 kmpl. The CVT helps optimize fuel efficiency in stop-start traffic, making it suitable for daily commuting. Running costs are reasonable for a compact SUV, but the absence of a diesel option means higher fuel bills for those covering long distances. For buyers focused on mileage and low running costs, the Kicks is a decent choice, especially if most driving is in urban areas.
December 1, 2025
The Nissan Kicks delivers practical efficiency for daily Indian driving, achieving approximately 28-31 mpg in city conditions and 35-36 mpg on highways, resulting in combined mileage around 31 mpg depending on driving patterns and powertrain choice. I observed that the 1.3-litre turbo engine manages these figures despite being tasked with moving an increasingly heavier vehicle compared to earlier generations. For urban Indian commuting with frequent stop-and-go traffic, expect real-world returns closer to the lower end of this spectrum, while highway cruising can stretch efficiency toward the higher figures. The AWD variant sacrifices approximately one additional mpg, an acceptable trade-off for enhanced traction during monsoon season or occasional off-road ventures that Indian roads sometimes demand.

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Nissan Kicks

Nissan started producing the Kicks subcompact crossover SUV in 2016, but the India-spec model was launched in January 2019. The global model is built on the V-platform while the Indian model is developed on the B0 platform, which is for reducing the manufacturing costs. The Kicks significantly shared platforms and parts with the Dacia Duster and the Dacia B0 platform-based Renault Captur, since all of them were made at the same Renault-Nissan facility in Chennai. Nissan stated in May 2020 that the K9K diesel engine will be phased out owing to the adoption of BS6 norms, with the Renault-Nissan-Daimler HR13DDT petrol turbo engine serving as a substitute. Let's discuss whether the car is worth buying and has all the required features and specs.

Introduction

Nissan Kicks Design and Style

Styling experts at Nissan have done a great job in designing the Kicks SUV. Its front fascia boasts a V-shaped grille which has chrome garnishing to a great extent; however, it doesn’t look over. The grille is surrounded by projector headlights with boomerang-shaped LED DRLs. The bonnet of the car is quite chubby and gives the car a massive appearance.

In the side profile, a robust shoulder line runs the length of the car. Nissan deserves credit for developing the 17" diamond-cut alloy wheels, which look really fantastic. The dual-tone finished floating roof adds to the beauty of the side design. The rear is also rather attractive; the tail light assembly is traditionally illuminated but includes a boomerang-shaped LED element.

In addition, the dual-tone bumper and use of chrome on the boot lid elements make it look attractive. Overall, the car gets a simple yet classy design. In terms of body dimensions, the SUV is 4384 mm in overall length, 1813 mm in overall width, and 1669 mm in overall height, with a wheelbase of 2673 mm.

Nissan Kicks Engine and Gearbox

Nissan has offered the new Kicks SUV with two powertrain options. The first one is a 1498cc, 4-cylinder In-line, 1.5-litre H2K petrol engine that uses the multi-point fuel-injection system and is capable of churning out 106 HP and 142 Nm of torque when mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The other one is a 1330cc, 4-cylinder In-line, 1.3-litre HR13DDT turbo petrol engine that uses gasoline direct injection and churns out 156 HP and 254 Nm of torque when mated to a 6-speed manual or CVT.

Nissan Kicks Interior, Instrument Cluster & Boot Space

Step inside the car and you will have a feeling of premiumness. The cabin is exceptionally nicely outfitted, with top-tier trimmings receiving leather treatment all around. It's the small details that count, and Nissan has certainly taken care of them. The dashboard gets a lovely leather finish that looks and feels great. There are also pseudo-carbon fibre parts within the cabin in a few spots.

The front and rear seating is quite comfortable, and the bolstering on the seats is really good. There is enough headroom and legroom in the second row, which makes journeys comfortable. Even three passengers can sit there comfortably. Headrests are adjustable, and an armrest with a cup holder is also offered.

The instrument cluster unit in the car gets a digital speedometer and a small MID. It offers a wide range of information, including range, fuel gauge, average, distance, and more. The offered boot space is a huge 400-litres for carrying ample luggage.

Nissan Kicks Brakes, Suspension & Tyres

Braking duties in the new Nissan Kicks are done by disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. While the suspension duties are assigned to McPherson Strut with Coil Spring, Stabilizer Bar & Double Acting Shock Absorber at the front and Torsion Beam with Coil Springs & Double Acting Shock Absorber at the rear. The SUV rides on 17-inch alloy wheels for the XV, XV Pre, and XV Pre Option variants while the XL variant gets 16-inch steel wheels. The 17-inch alloy wheels are clothed in 215/60 size tubeless tyres while the 16-inch wheels are outfitted with 215/65 size tubeless tyres.

Nissan Kicks Key Features

Like all other its offerings in the car market, Nissan has presented the Kicks with a host of features including automatic headlamps & cornering fog lamps, remote engine start, idle start/stop system, and voice recognition with floating 8.0 A-IVI, cruise control, leather-wrapped dashboard, auto AC, rain-sensing wipers, electrically adjustable ORVMs, cooled glove box with illumination, integrated 2DIN audio system, steering mounted controls, console storage lamp and so on.

When it comes to passenger safety, Nissan has not made any compromise and loaded the SUV with top-notch safety features comprising dual airbags, ABS with EBD & braking assistance, Hill Start assist, impact-sensing auto door lock, emergency stop signal, traction control system, vehicle stability management system and electronic stability control to name a few. However, the mentioned last three features are available for turbo variants only.

Nissan Kicks Top Speed, Acceleration & Mileage

2023 Nissan Kicks accelerates from 0-100 kmph within 11.85 seconds and can reach a top speed of 165 kmph. As far as fuel efficiency is concerned, the car offers a combined mileage of up to 16 km/l which can be different in the real world depending on various factors like terrain, speed, driving style and all.

Nissan Kicks Variants & Colour Options

2023 Nissan Kicks come in a total of four variants called XL, XV, XV Premium and XV Premium(O). The colour scheme of the Nissan Kicks consists of six monotone and three dual-tone shades. These are Pearl White, Blade Silver, Bronze Grey, Deep Blue Pearl, Night Shade, Fire Red, Pearl White & Onyx Black, Bronze Grey & Amber Orange and Fire Red & Onyx Black. It needs to be mentioned that dual-tone colours are available only with XV Premium(O) variants.

Nissan Kicks Ex-showroom Price & On-Road Price

The ex-showroom price for the Nissan Kicks starts at Rs 9.50 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 14.90 lakh. Understanding the difference between ex-showroom and on-road pricing, the ex-showroom price of a car is the asking price that excludes the cost of road tax, insurance, and registration. But on the other side, the on-road price includes all of the previously stated costs as well as insurance, registration, a one-time road tax, an extended warranty, and all vehicle accessories. It is essential to know that in our country, on-road prices vary greatly from state to state.

Nissan Kicks Competitors

2023 Nissan Kicks locks horns with the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV300, Honda WR-V, MG Astor and the Renault Duster.

Verdict - Should You Buy Nissan Kicks or not?

As we all know, no car is perfect and has some flaws as well. 2023 Nissan Kicks is a feature-rich, well-designed SUV, but there are some things that can be its negatives. Like there is no sunroof offered and the use of plastic in some places doesn’t feel good. Therefore, if you want to buy a powerful car with a host of features and a sunroof is not a big deal for you, the Nissan Kicks could be a good choice for you.
