Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi (O)

About
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi (O) is a compact hatchback that offers several practical advantages. It features a 793cc twin-cylinder diesel engine, which, despite its lack of refinement and top-end power, provides good driveability within city limits. The car has a comfortable ride thanks to its long travel suspension and tall tyres, making it competent on rough roads. The cabin is well-packaged with ample legroom, headroom, and a spacious boot. The ZDi (O) variant comes equipped with decent features such as a four-speaker music system, USB, AUX, and Bluetooth, along with safety features like ABS and dual front airbags. However, the electrically-powered steering feels heavier than its petrol counterpart, and the gearshifts can become notchy over time. Despite its limitations, the Celerio diesel is a reliable choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency and city driving comfort.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi (O) is a mixed bag when it comes to overall performance and value. On the positive side, it offers terrific fuel economy, with an ARAI rating of 27.62 kmpl, which is a significant advantage for those looking to minimize running costs. The car also boasts a well-packaged cabin with adequate legroom, excellent headroom, and a spacious 235-liter boot. However, the refinement levels of the 793cc twin-cylinder diesel engine are poor, making it sound crude and noisy both inside and out. Additionally, the engine feels underpowered on the expressway, lacking the top-end power needed for high-speed driving. The higher variants, particularly the ZDi (O), come with a hefty premium that is hard to justify given the engines limitations. Despite these drawbacks, the Celerio diesel excels in city driving, offering good driveability and a light clutch that doesnt tire you out in stop-go traffic.
Price
The Maruti Celerio Diesel ZDi (O) was launched in India with a price range of between Rs. 4.65 lakhs to Rs. 5.71 lakhs (ex-Delhi). However, the on-road price, especially for the top-spec ZDi (O) variant, can be quite steep, reaching up to Rs. 6.9 lakhs in cities like Mumbai. This premium is largely due to the additional cost of the diesel engine over the petrol variant, which can range from Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 80,000. While the base LDi variant is more affordable, the higher variants are priced at a level that makes them less competitive in the market. The cost, combined with the engines limitations, makes it essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully before making a purchase decision.
Latest Updates
Wednesday, 03 August 2022 06:47 PM Due to low sales, the Maruti Celerio diesel was discontinued just a year after its launch. Maruti Suzuki had to clear the leftover inventory with significant discounts. I believe the markets preference for petrol and CNG variants over diesel might have played a role in this decision.
Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:29 PM Despite its strong fuel efficiency and unique engine, the Celerio diesel ZDi (O) had some drawbacks, such as taking a long time to reach 100 kmph and requiring frequent gear shifts to stay in the power band. The cars weight and engine characteristics made overtaking a cautious affair. I believe these performance issues might have contributed to its relatively short market lifespan.
Wednesday, 24 June 2015 02:04 AM The Celerio diesel ZDi (O) shared the same exterior and interior features as its petrol counterpart, with no significant design changes except for the DDiS badge. This included features like a 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, power steering, and a Bluetooth-compatible music system. I think the decision to keep the design consistent was wise, as it maintained the cars familiar appeal.
Wednesday, 03 June 2015 10:13 AM The Maruti Celerio diesel, specifically the ZDi (O) variant, was launched in June 2015 with a focus on fuel efficiency, boasting an ARAI-rated figure of 27.62 km/l, making it Indias most fuel-efficient car at the time. This variant came with features like dual airbags, ABS, foglights, alloy wheels, and a Bluetooth-compatible music system. I believe this level of fuel efficiency was a game-changer in the Indian market, especially for those looking to save on fuel costs.
Monday, 01 June 2015 04:34 PM The Celerio diesel ZDi (O) was powered by Suzukis self-developed 793 cc twin-cylinder DDiS diesel engine, which produced 47 bhp and 125 Nm of torque. This engine was notable for being the lightest in its class, weighing just 89 kg. I think the engineering behind this engine was impressive, given its compact size and performance.
