Maini Reva Standard

The Maini Reva Standard is a compact, two-seater electric hatchback that was Indias first electric car when it was launched in 2001. Developed by Chetan Maini, it was initially produced by the Reva Electric Car Company before being acquired by Mahindra in 2010. The car features a 48V, 200Amp lead-acid battery, producing 17.4 bhp and 7 kgm of torque. It has a top speed of 65 kmh and a kerb weight of 740 kg. The interior, though cramped, has a friendly design with a swoopy dashboard and chunky controls. The car is known for its low centre of gravity due to the heavy battery pack, making it stable and fun to drive, despite its underpowered nature. It is an important milestone in Indias journey towards electric mobility, showcasing the potential of frugal engineering and eco-friendly transportation.

The Maini Reva Standard, although a pioneering effort in Indias electric vehicle segment, has its share of limitations. While it is commendable for its frugal engineering and environmental friendliness, the cars performance and comfort leave much to be desired. The vehicle is underpowered, taking 8.14 seconds to reach 40 kmh and 27.61 seconds to hit 60 kmh, which can be disappointing for those accustomed to conventional cars. However, its low running costs and the innovative use of technology, such as remote battery charging and smartphone app controls, are significant positives. The cramped interior and limited rear space make it more suitable for short trips and smaller families. Overall, its a good option for those prioritizing eco-friendliness and low operating expenses, but not ideal for those seeking performance or spaciousness.

The Maini Reva Standard was priced between 2.99 lakh and 3.89 lakh ex-showroom in India, depending on the location. On-road prices varied, but in Delhi, it could cost around 3.10 lakh to 3.76 lakh, including taxes and other charges. In other cities like Bengaluru, the on-road price could be closer to 4 lakhs due to different state taxes. While the price is competitive when compared to some entry-level petrol cars, the lack of infrastructure and government incentives in many regions makes the overall value proposition less compelling. However, for buyers in cities with subsidies, such as Delhi, the price becomes more attractive.

The Maini Reva Standard offers an impressive mileage in terms of electricity consumption. It can travel up to 80 km on a full charge, and with the economical E-mode, this range can extend to 100 km. The running cost is exceptionally low, with a full charge costing around 31.50, translating to approximately 60 paise per kilometre. This makes it an economical choice for daily commutes, especially for those with fixed routes and access to charging facilities.
