Mahindra Thar 4x4 CRDe (Old)

About
The Mahindra Thar CRDe 4x4 is a rugged, all-terrain vehicle that embodies the spirit of adventure and off-road driving. With its 2.5-liter CRDe engine, it offers a refined yet powerful performance, although it lacks the smoothness and quietness of modern cars. The vehicle features a four-wheel drive system and has shown impressive articulation and traction, making it a favorite among off-road enthusiasts. However, it lacks basic comforts such as a hard top, and the interior quality is not up to international standards. The ride quality and handling have been improved with the use of 15-inch tyres, but they still have room for enhancement. The Thar CRDe 4x4 is ideal for those who value its classic look, strong metal body, and off-road capabilities over everyday comfort and refinement.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Mahindra Thar CRDe 4x4, while being a robust and capable off-roader, has its share of drawbacks that potential buyers should consider. The vehicles engine is refined and smooth, but it is marred by high NVH levels, particularly the wind noise that becomes annoying above 80 kmph. The soft top, though a nostalgic feature, flaps excessively at higher speeds, adding to the noise. However, the Thar excels in off-road capabilities, with impressive wheel articulation and 4WD performance. The ride quality and handling have seen improvements, but they still fall short of modern car standards. For those who prioritize ruggedness and off-road prowess over comfort and refinement, the Thar CRDe 4x4 is a solid choice, but it may not be the best fit for daily city driving or long highway trips.
Price
The Mahindra Thar CRDe 4x4, during its production run from 2014 to 2020, was priced in the range of approximately 12 lakhs to 13.5 lakhs ex-showroom. On-road prices varied depending on the state and local taxes, but you could expect to pay around 14.5 lakhs to 16 lakhs. Considering the vehicles capabilities and the segment it operates in, the pricing was competitive, especially given the Thars reputation for durability and off-road performance. However, the lack of modern comforts and the high NVH levels might make some buyers question the value for money, especially when compared to international standards.
Latest Updates
Thursday, 30 March 2023 01:00 PM Despite its limitations, the old Thar had a loyal following due to its off-road prowess and unbreakable legacy. It was one of the few old-school off-roaders still being sold in India and was often used for serious off-roading. I think its off-road capabilities were unmatched in its time.
Saturday, 21 November 2020 08:03 PM The old Thars suspension was less refined, with an independent torsion bar front suspension and leaf springs at the rear. This setup made the ride bouncier and less comfortable, especially on rough roads. In contrast, the new Thar has a more modern suspension setup that provides a smoother ride. I believe the old Thars suspension was one of its major drawbacks.
Saturday, 21 November 2020 08:58 PM The old Thars engine, although robust, had a narrower torque band compared to the new model. It required more frequent gear shifts, which affected fuel economy and overall driving experience. The new Thars engines offer a broader torque band, making them more efficient and easier to drive. I think the old Thars engine was good but not as refined as the new ones.
Saturday, 21 November 2020 07:00 PM The old Thars 4x4 system, although effective, was less sophisticated compared to the new model. It lacked features like hill-descent control and electro-mechanical driveline disconnect, which make off-roading easier and safer in the new Thar. I think these advancements have significantly improved the Thars off-road capabilities.
Monday, 05 October 2020 01:53 PM The old Mahindra Thar 4x4 CRDe, launched in 2010, was based on the MM540 and was known for its rugged and utilitarian design. It had a 2.5-litre turbocharged CRDe diesel engine producing 105bhp and 247Nm of torque. This engine was mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Thar was a favorite among off-road enthusiasts but lacked modern comforts and safety features. I think its raw, unbridled off-road capability was part of its charm.
Monday, 05 October 2020 03:22 PM The old Thar was more suited to off-the-beaten-track roads and was not as comfortable or practical for daily driving. It was primarily seen as a lifestyle product rather than a family car. I think its utilitarian nature was both its strength and weakness.
Monday, 17 August 2020 01:27 AM The old Thar was not compliant with the mandatory safety norms that came into effect, leading to its discontinuation. It lacked essential safety features such as dual airbags, ABS, and EBD, which are now standard in the new model. This made it less appealing to buyers looking for a safer vehicle. I believe safety should always be a top priority, and the old Thar fell short in this area.
Sunday, 16 August 2020 11:07 AM In terms of design, the old Thar retained the classic and boxy silhouette of its predecessors but had a more basic look compared to the new model. It featured a simpler front bumper, smaller wheels, and fewer color options. The old Thar also had exposed hinges and removable doors, which added to its rugged appeal. I think the simplicity of the old Thars design was part of its rugged charm.
Sunday, 16 August 2020 06:41 AM The interior of the old Thar was sparsely loaded with features, offering only basic amenities like an AC, double-din music system, and analogue speedometer. It lacked modern comforts such as a touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, and key-less entry, which are now available in the new Thar. This made it less comfortable for daily driving. I think the lack of modern features made the old Thar feel outdated quickly.
Sunday, 16 August 2020 01:52 PM The old Thar did not have advanced safety features like ESP with rollover mitigation, hill assist, and dual airbags, which are now standard in the new model. This lack of safety features made it less appealing to families and daily drivers. I believe these safety features are crucial for any vehicle.
Mileage
Thursday, 21 November 2024 08:00 AM The Mahindra Thar CRDe 4x4 offers decent fuel efficiency for its class. In real-world conditions, it can achieve around 10.7 to 11.75 kmpl, depending on the driving conditions and load. For instance, a 2000 km Sikkim trip with five people on board yielded an overall fuel efficiency of about 10.7 kmpl. This mileage is respectable for an off-road focused vehicle, making it a viable option for those who need a balance between off-road capability and running costs.

Mahindra Thar 4x4 CRDe (Old) Review

23 Jul, 2015 04:10 PM

Synopsis

India's own off road champion gets a new Avatar in its top variant, the Thar CRDe. Keeping the legacy alive, the Thar has gone to a new level of refinement and styling, keeping all the old feels still alive. The DI variant stays conservative whereas the CRDe gets all-new list of features and a remarkable plus noticeable change in appearance. It has got everything which was felt missing from last few years and the change will surely make a place in your heart.

Exterior

The front says it all, with its all new bumper, which is no doubt a very attractive one but seems a bit plastic friendly than the older big piece of metal. The design seems to protect the others from mud exhaling Thar and providing a decent look unlike the open safe in the older generation of the SUV. It comes with new wheel arches matching the bumper and not just that, the canopy at the top has also been slightly modified and given a more perfect finish than before. The headlights are clear lens type, making them brighter and appealing than the older ones. Thar CRDe also comes with new footsteps for the sides.

Interior

This time, the beauty has been perfectly paired with the beast. The new CRDe gets an all new interior and surprisingly, it’s a dual tone Black and Beige. The off road machine gets a soft side inside the cabin, making the interior look nothing less than a miracle for the Thar. It comes with a Thar badge in the center which can be removed in order to get a 2-Din player fitted into it. The dashboard gets all new instrument console, a lockable glove box and beautiful looking AC knobs and switches. The movable AC vents with silver linings add up to the beauty of the Thar.

Instrument Console

The instrument console on the Thar is a 3-Pod type, making the off road experience as beautiful as it can be. The center pod gets the analogue speedometer with a digital odometer below it. The right gets the tachometer whereas the left one gets fuel and other indicators of the car. The console is beautiful and combines will an all new steering wheel, which has been shared with the Mahindra's best seller, the Bolero.

Engine & Gearbox

The Thar CRDe has the 2498 cc NEF TCI-CRDe engine, producing 105 BHP @ 3800 rpm and 247 NM @ 1800-2000 rpm. The power output of the car is excellent and the manual BORGWARNER shift on fly 4WD adds to the utility of the vehicle. The gearbox stays 5-speed manual and the car seems as good from its heart as it is from its muscle. The DI variant stays same with its 2523 cc, 63 BHP engine.

Off-road Ability

The Thar has been made specifically for this section and Mahindra does not compromise on this at any cost. Thar CRDe comes with updated capabilities which completely differ from those limited ones on the DI. Thar CRDe comes with better 235/70-16 tyres for better grip off the road. It comes with an approach angle of 44 degree and a departure angle of 27 degree, making it into those places, which would let you come out once you enter. The ground clearance of 200 mm is very useful while on rocky surfaces. The front and rear axle comes with a full and semi floating Hypoid ratio of 4.3:1 respectively. The rear also gets mechanical locking differential for better traction on all types of surfaces. The turning radius stays at 5.75 m, much shorter than the DI.

Comfort

The new Thar CRDe comes with very comfortable front seats, which are wider than the earlier model. It comes with 6 seat arrangement, with 2 rear benches facing each other. The AC works efficiently and does not let the environment disturb you till you permit yourself. The canopy can be removed and rearranged easily, making it easy for use in rough weathers. The rack and pinion power steering makes each ride as simple as a normal day city drive. The dashboard comes with a handle, which can be clutched by the passenger on the other side of the driver while going on a rough surface.

Brakes & Suspension

The CRDe comes with a 226 mm disc brake for the front whereas the rear uses a 282 mm drum brakes. The dual hydraulic circuit with tandem master cylinder, vacuum assisted servo with auto-slack adjuster promises efficient and impressive braking on this beast. The front suspension is the independent one with a torsion and stabilizer bar whereas the rear is a semi-elliptical leaf spring with shock absorbers. The whole setup performs really well on all type of terrain and the feel of off roading comes truly alive through that.

Variants

The Mahindra Thar is being offered in total 4 variants, with 2 different engine options. Thar CRDe is the most efficient and expensive one whereas the other 3 variants are based on the DI engine. One comes with a 2WD and other with a power steering to the 2WD. The third is the 4X4 DI, which is the most useful DI model.

Shades

Thar CRDe comes in Red Rage, Fiery Black, Mist Silver, Diamond White and Rocky Beige shade. The DI is limited to a lower number of shades.

Ex-showroom Price

Mahindra Thar CRDe comes with a price tag of INR 8.25 lakh, whereas the DI range starts at INR 5.21 lakh for the 2WD variant and goes up to INR 5.96 for the 4WD option.

The new 2015 Mahindra Thar sports smart interiors along with a completely redesigned dashboard, AC controls and a new centre console. Both front and rear seats are comfortable. As compared to previous model, this face-lifted model has got stylish looks and design. The major changes you can see in the interior where you will find a new dash in beige shade which has slots for a 2 Din audio system. The steering wheel is also new. Other facilities added to the SUV include a windshield demister, a lockable glove-box and a 12V charging point. The car has better off road capabilities which differentiate this model from the previous one. On the exterior side, it has also got some changes which comes in the form of a new plastic cladding over the wheel arches. The company has also added new side steps and clear lens headlamps as well. This is all what I saw when I took test drive of this SUV.

Looks Better than the 2014 Model

Before starting my review, I would like to mention here that, I am very passionate of off-roading and Thar is the best vehicle up to date. We have Mahindra 'Thar Diesel Di' in our friend circle, so figure out the changes in 2015 is easy for me. Yesterday I went to showroom to have a glimpse of this SUV. The Mahindra has really done good job on this machine now. The all-new black cladding around wheel arches, alloy wheels and plastic front/ rear bumper is what I first noticed. It was looking sporty. When I get in for a test drive, I was amazed with the interior. Thar embossed on center console, leather on gear knob and silver finish on some parts giving it refreshing look. So, I made my mind and booked the new beast for me.

Launch a model with custom made features

This is a very good looking SUV but with very basic features so make its features according to its looks or you have to offer customised models for market like 1) mHawk engine for better and smooth drive. 2) Hard roof fore cities for safety and batter cooling with a/c. 3) Also make a five seater model with four doors for daily driving and comfort. 4) Please upgrade its dashboard features and build quality. If all the customers wants some accessories like above than its easy and reliable to choose from company made quality and charge accordingly.
