Hyundai Elantra
Hyundai Model
General information and overview
The Hyundai Elantra is a premium mid-size sedan in India, available with petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrains, featuring 113-150 bhp engines and smooth automatic or manual transmissions. Its standout points include a striking, aggressive exterior, a tech-forward and spacious cabin with leather upholstery and digital instrumentation, and an emphasis on comfort with ventilated seats and wireless charging. The Elantra's ride quality suits both city driving and long highway cruises, though the rear seating may feel snug for tall passengers on extended trips. Safety features like lane assist, blind-spot detection, ABS, and EBD come standard to bolster confidence on Indian roads. There are minor drawbacks such as occasional infotainment glitches and a sensitive lane assist system that could use refinement. Overall, it offers a well-rounded, stylish package aimed at professionals and families seeking a refined driving experience with modern amenities in the Indian sedan market.
The Hyundai Elantra is a mid-size premium sedan that combines a distinctive, sharp exterior design with a comfortable, tech-heavy interior. It offers multiple powertrain options including petrol, diesel, and a hybrid variant tailored for Indian roads. Features include leather upholstery, ventilated seats, wireless charging, lane assist, blind-spot detection, and advanced infotainment systems with digital clusters. The Elantra excels in ride comfort and highway cruising with a quiet, smooth engine and balanced suspension, although rear seat space might be a bit snug for tall passengers. Its capable handling and contemporary safety features like ABS, EBD, and hill-start assist add to its appeal. The vehicle is well-suited for buyers seeking a premium, daily-driven sedan with modern styling, respectable performance, and a good spread of features without stepping up to luxury brands.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Hyundai Elantra stands out for its bold design, well-tuned engine, and a comfortable, tech-loaded cabin, making it a strong contender in the mid-size sedan segment. Its driving dynamics are smooth and responsive in city traffic and on highways, thanks to a refined engine-gearbox combo. The ride quality is balanced and comfortable, though the rear space feels somewhat tight for taller passengers. Some software glitches, especially in infotainment and sensitive lane assist, slightly detract from the overall experience. Still, the Elantra impresses with its quiet engine, good safety features, and modern styling, though it might feel a bit pricey compared to key rivals. For buyers valuing driving ease, comfort, and updated tech, the Elantra offers a compelling package, but those prioritizing rear-seat space or seeking raw driving excitement may want to consider alternatives.
The Hyundai Elantra stands out in the premium sedan segment in India with a stylish, bold design and a well-balanced combination of comfort, features, and performance. Its powerful yet smoothly tuned engine delivers responsive acceleration and an engaging driving experience, especially in urban traffic conditions. The cabin impresses with high-quality materials, leather seats, and a feature-rich infotainment system. However, some software glitches with the infotainment and overly sensitive lane assist can be slightly distracting. Rear seat space might feel tight for taller passengers on long journeys, and the clutch effort in heavy traffic can be a bit tiring. Overall, the Elantra delivers a refined ride quality and solid safety features, making it an appealing choice for those seeking a premium sedan that blends style, technology, and driving comfort without moving into Audi or BMW territory. It’s a good balance of practical usability and modern appeal, though slightly pricey for the segment.
Recent news and announcements
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra has received a significant styling refresh, including a new split grille and refined taillight design, giving it a sleeker and more modern appearance. The interior has also been updated with additional USB charge ports, a redesigned wireless charging pad, and new side-impact airbags for rear passengers. I think these changes will make the Elantra more appealing to buyers looking for a stylish and safe compact sedan.
Hyundai has enhanced the technology and driver assist features in the 2024 Elantra. The top Limited trim now includes a surround-view camera system, making parking easier. Other trims also benefit from standard features like forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning, and lane keeping assistance. This emphasis on safety and convenience is a big plus for potential buyers.
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra N has been updated to be more civilized for daily driving without sacrificing its performance. New wheels reduce unsprung mass, and the electronically adjustable suspension settings are more compliant on harsh pavement. These changes make the Elantra N a better daily driver while retaining its sporty edge. I believe this balance will attract more buyers who want both performance and comfort.
Hyundai has introduced new soft-touch door panels across all trim levels of the 2024 Elantra, improving overall comfort and feel inside the cabin. Additional USB-C ports and a redesigned wireless charging pad have also been added for enhanced usability. These interior updates should make the driving experience more enjoyable.
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra N features new 19-inch wheels, a rear wing spoiler, and a dual exhaust system, enhancing its sporty appearance. The car also includes new lightweight bucket seats with a light-up N logo, adding to its performance-focused design. These updates make the Elantra N stand out in the market.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the Hyundai Elantra is priced ex-showroom starting around Rs 20.39 lakh, with on-road prices varying between Rs 22 lakh and Rs 23 lakh depending on city and variant chosen. This positions it slightly higher than some rivals but justified by its rich feature list that includes ventilated seats, wireless charging, and advanced safety tech. The Rs 1.5 lakh hike from previous pricing has narrowed its value gap, yet it offers a premium feel and modern gadgets rare at this price point in India. Prospective buyers need to factor in higher costs for hybrid variants or automatic transmissions. While the base diesel and petrol trims offer competitive specs, the Elantra's premium positioning means running costs and initial outlay are on the higher side for its segment, requiring buyers to prioritize features and refinement over budget.
In India, the Hyundai Elantra is priced around Rs 20.39 lakh ex-showroom for the diesel and petrol variants, with the hybrid versions positioned higher due to advanced powertrain technology. On-road prices can typically range from approximately Rs 22 lakh to Rs 23 lakh, depending on location and variant. This pricing positions the Elantra as a slightly premium offering compared to compact sedans but competitive against other premium sedans like the Skoda Octavia or Honda Civic. Although the recent price hike of about Rs 1.5 lakh has somewhat eroded its value proposition, it still offers strong features, driving dynamics, and contemporary styling that justify the cost. Buyers looking at value for money in this segment will find the Elantra well-equipped with convenience and safety tech, making it a worthwhile but not the cheapest choice among rivals.
Fuel efficiency information
The Hyundai Elantra delivers mileage figures around 14-15 kmpl for its diesel variant in real-world Indian conditions, while petrol versions typically achieve slightly less, around 13-14 kmpl. The hybrid option, though more expensive, can significantly reduce running costs with fuel economy closer to 22-25 kmpl. If mileage and lower fuel bills are a priority, the hybrid is worth considering, but for those focused on upfront costs, the diesel offers a good balance between performance and efficiency for Indian roads.
The Elantra delivers mileage around 14-15 km/l for diesel variants and around 13-16 km/l for petrol, with the hybrid model significantly improving efficiency, claiming about 22-25 km/l in Indian conditions. Given rising fuel prices, the hybrid variant is especially compelling for those prioritizing lower running costs and higher fuel efficiency while retaining premium comfort and performance. If daily commuting and city driving are key, the hybrid electric option significantly reduces fuel stops and operating expenses.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Hyundai Elantra
2016 Hyundai Elantra has gone ahead of the last generation's curvy styling with no denial to the fact that it has gained much more modern design bits all around its body. The car now feels much more premium and locks horns with the market competition consisting of Toyota Corolla Altis, Skoda Octavia and Chevrolet Cruze. Each one of them has a specialty of its own, ranging from excellent mileage to a powerful engine and luxurious interiors to loads of space. Let's see how the new Elantra performs in its very own segment.
Dimensions
The car measures 4570 mm in length, 1800 mm in width and 1465 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2700 mm, being exactly the same as the old generation car. It has grown 40 mm in length, 25 mm in width while the height has been lowered by 20 mm.
Exterior
Hyundai's shift from the fluidic design language can be clearly seen on the 2016 Elantra. The edges which were finished in a flow are now more sharp while the relaxed nature of the older generation Elantra now gets some modern day attitude into it. The front looks totally refreshed, bringing the half a decade old design into 2016. The headlights have gone sharp while the design simply mixes into the hexagonal, modern and face enhancing grill. Addition of Boomerang shaped sections while missing the DRL's for a small projector fog lamp clearly indicates that Hyundai will cut those costs which are still not mandatory in India.
The rear section feels more upmarket with edgy lights and a big rear bumper. The boot opening feels a bit above other sedans of the class while the side profile looks superb and indicates how the boot design has been raised for a definite and unique character. Chrome handles and body colored ORVM's are the same as every car in its class. The roof line is in the traditional Hyundai style, leaving behind smaller windows to rear seat passengers.
Interior
The fluidic design within the interior has also been left for the much simple yet in-fashion design of the car's interior. The upper and lower dashboard has been neatly divided into two parts with a thick silver bar running all across the space. The large touchscreen sits proudly over all other components, making it on the easy reach of driver at all of the times.
The air vents have been neatly finished with no chrome hint, making brushed silver as the gentle and beautiful looking companion on the inside. The car now has a fully loaded, all new steering wheel, new instrument console with large MID which also brings back the analogue fuel gauge and engine temperature indicator. The temperature control and even the push start button are finished in fine Matt Silver. For the 1st time in India, Elantra now comes with an electric sunroof.
Engine & Gearbox
The new Elantra is powered by a 1.8 L dual VTVT petrol and 1.6 L CRDi VGT diesel motor. The petrol engine is a 1999 cc, 4-cylinder unit producing 152 PS @ 6200 rpm and 192.2 NM @ 4000 rpm. The diesel on the other hand is a 1582 cc, 4-cylinder unit producing 128 PS @ 4000 rpm and 260 NM @ 1900-2750 rpm. Both the engines are offered with a six speed manual as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission. The car if offered in a front wheel drive variant only.
Both these engines are highly refined and return some class leading efficiency figures (Petrol - 14.6 kmpl/Diesel - 22.5 kmpl). The ride feels powerful while triple digit speeds are more confidently dealt in the new Hyundai Elantra. The lack of paddle shifters is not evident as such as the car loves cruising more than it loves revving hard on the roads.
Brakes & Suspension
Hyundai offers the Elantra with 4 wheel disc brakes, which are further loaded with safety features like ABS, EBD, Electronic stability program and vehicle stability management. The front suspension is coupled torsion beam axle while the rear uses McPherson strut type with coil spring. The car engulfs a lot of swings within itself whereas handling the large potholes on some really dirty Indian roads is still unknown.
Safety & Comfort
Elantra offers a safe ride with its dual front as well as side and curtain airbags. The car comes loaded with seat belt pre-tensioners while speed sensing auto lock as well as impact sensing auto unlock makes it safe in times of emergency conditions. The automatic variant is even offered with Hill Start Assist while parking camera and sensors for the rear makes reverse as easy as driving up front.
Hyundai has not compromised on comfort of the passengers as the dual zone fully automatic temperature control system helps in providing the best possible climate inside the car. The steering mounted controls makes the least possible diversion for the driver by providing all the controls of telephony and music playback on the wheel itself. Not just that, the car even comes with ventilated front seats, cruise control and a 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation.
Shades
The new Elantra is offered in 5 mind blowing shades named Marina Blue, Polar White, Sleek Silver, Phantom Black and Red Passion.
Variants
Hyundai offers Elantra in 5 variants named S, SX, SX AT, SX(O) and SX(O) AT. The SX AT is not available for the diesel variant.
Price
The prices for the new Elantra starts at INR 12,99,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the S petrol variant while the diesel S comes at INR 14,79,000. The top spec diesel AT Elantra costs INR 19,19,000.
Verdict
The car has been very well placed in the Indian market. The starting price of INR 12.99 lakh is amazing while what may disturb some enthusiast is the lack of features on the S trim, loosing out the side and curtain airbags, reverse parking, projector headlight and even the LED taillights. The Elantra actually has been stripped totally down on the S variant while the SX even does not have some really important features.
The SX(O) has been well loaded while the price difference between the petrol and diesel is not properly justified. Paying INR 1.8 lakhs extra for the least powerful engine of its class over the great 2.0 L petrol won't be that nice. Overall, the car has been built with an all new spark, providing Hyundai lovers with a whole new story and a totally new design language.
