Maruti 800 is an iconic car for India. Maruti Suzuki launched “800” in India in 1983 and since then it has become a trusted brand for a middle class Indian family. “800” is a small and compact car known for comfort, performance and reliability. But Maruti has decided to phase out the car from the market by 2015–16 as the hatchback meets only BSIII pollution norms and the car maker has decided not to upgrade it to Euro IV emission norms, which the government has made mandatory. Over the years the “800” has got many up-gradations to meet the required standards. It is available in 4 variants namely 800 Standard, 800 AC, 800 Duo, 800 Duo AC. The Duo variants are LPG equipped. Maruti 800 measures 1405 mm in height, 1440 mm in width and 3335 mm in length.

It is a small hatchback thus supports small 2175 mm wheel base and ground clearance of 170 mm. It has minimum turning radius of 4.4 m and weighs 665 kg for the standard variant and 683 kg for standard LPG variant. Maruti 800 is a typical 5-door hatch. Its front has a long and slanting windscreen and headlamps sports clear lenses with integrated parking lights. The front grille is also redone and front bumper is broader than the last generation model. Inside the “800” you can find dual tone upholstery for the interiors. It offers comfortable seating space for five people. The rear seats are of bench type and the front seats comes with adjustable option. The instrument cluster features a large dial type speedometer, a small fuel, a temperature gauges, oil and battery indicators. The dashboard has cockpit style shape that houses AC controls and four AC vents. Maruti 800 gets power from a 3-cylinder, four stroke water cooled SOHC engine which has displacement of 796cc. This motor outputs 37 bhp max power at 5000 rpm with peak torque of 59 Nm at 2500 rpm.

The Multi-point fuel injected engine is equipped with 4-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the five-speed manual transmission is also available. It returns decent mileage figures of 15 kmpl in the city and 22 kmpl while cruising through highways. For making sure smooth ride through bumpy roads the front suspension uses McPherson strut coil spring and for rear suspension it has coil spring with gas-filled shock absorbers. The front brakes are disc type with drum brakes down at the rear provides proper braking system. “800” is packed with standard safety features such as an intelligent computerized anti-theft system, side impact beams to prevent damage in case of an accident, laminated windshields to prevent broken glass particles to scatter, high mount rear stop lamp as well as collapsible steering column. Its radial tyres are of size 145/70 R12 and doesn't features alloy wheels. The affordable low priced Maruti “800” is available in superior white, silky silver, brick red and blue blaze body shades.
