October 2023 Sales: Royal Enfield 650, Kawasaki Z900, Ninja, Hayabusa Report

Although India is known as one of the biggest markets for motorcycles and scooters worldwide, there hasn't been much movement in the huge bike industry in the past. But in October 2023, things took a significant turn for the better as sales of motorbikes with 500cc or more had a significant YoY gain of 93.92%, almost doubling in volume. When comparing the numbers to September 2023, this rise becomes even more apparent and shows a positive MoM gain.  The Indian big bike market is changing, and Royal Enfield becomes a major player. The company's Super Meteor and 650 Twins are significant contributors to this development. These motorcycle models are still the main drivers of the growing 500cc+ motorbike market.  The increase in sales of bigger bikes indicates a change in the motorcycle industry's dynamics in India, as enthusiasts show an increasing preference for motorcycles with greater displacement. It would be exciting to see how other producers react to this expanding trend and add to the changing story of the Indian motorcycle scene as the industry continues to change.

Important Factors of the 500cc+ Motorcycle Sales in October 2023

1. Dominance of Royal Enfield

With impressive sales in October, Royal Enfield held a 91.71% market share in the 500cc+ category.

2. Super Meteor 650 Triumphs

With 2,202 units sold and a 51.15% market share, the Super Meteor 650 proved to be the most successful model, demonstrating its appeal to riders.

3. Performance of the Original 650 Twins

The Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650, the Royal Enfield's first 650 Twins, together sold 1,746 units. However, there was a minor YoY decrease of 6.03%, with 112 fewer units than the prior year. The Kawasaki Z900 came out as the most cost-effective and well-liked four-cylinder motorbike with a displacement of 500cc or more. Sales statistics for October indicate that 119 of these bikes were sold.

4. Performance of Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R

With 67 sales, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R stood out in the litre-class high-performance category, showing a significant YoY rise of 191.30%.

5. Indian Market Sensitivity

The Z900 and ZX-10R are two products that accurately represent the price sensitivity of the Indian market. Their revenue growth highlights the importance that competitive pricing is in influencing consumer decisions.  These sales numbers demonstrate Royal Enfield's power and the Indian market's receptiveness to reasonably priced, high-performance models, while also offering useful data about the preferences and trends in the 500cc+ motorbike class.

With 4,305 units sold, October 2023 saw a significant increase in sales within the thriving 500 cc+ motorbike market. Comparing this strong result to the same period last year, when just 2,220 units were sold, shows a significant increase of 93.92%.

1. Hayabusa Soars

Suzuki's famous Hayabusa became popular, selling 52 units at a whopping 85.71% YoY gain.

2. Triumph Street Triple Triumphs

With 29 units sold and a notable 26.09% YoY gain, Triumph's Street Triple retained its position as the brand's most popular big bike.

3. Kawasaki Dominance

Selling 16 and 15 units respectively, the Kawasaki Versys 650 and Ninja 650 took seventh and eighth place. Surprisingly, Ninja 650 saw a remarkable 1400% YoY gain, a notable increase from the 1 unit sold in October 2022.

4. A Variety of Performances

The motorcycle market displayed a variety of performances, with six units sold each of the Triumph Trident 660, Harley-Davidson Sportster S, and Fat Boy 114 models. Notably, Fat Boy 114 saw a 50% YoY rise.

5. Frequently Observed

Kawasaki made an uncommon appearance, selling four Ninja H2 SX SE units, compared to three sold by each of the Vulcan S, Speed Twin, and Rocket III. Harley-Davidson made a contribution of two Nightster and Street Glide units.

6. Solo Sellers

To fill out the sales ratings, a number of motorcycles, including the Harley-Davidson Fat Bob, Triumph Bonneville T100, Ninja H2 SX, Kawasaki Z650, Z650 RS, and Z900 RS, each sold one unit.

Unfortunately, a few models saw no takers in October 2023: the Suzuki V-Strom 650, the Honda CB650, the Harley-Davidson Pan America, the 883 Iron, the Kawasaki Ninja 1000, the W800, the Versys 1000, the Triumph Tiger 1200, the Bonneville T120, the Tiger Sport 660, the Suzuki V-Strom 650, the Katana, the Moto Guzzi, the Aprilia RSV4 Factory, and the Tuono V4.  To sum up, the sales performance of motorcycles with 500cc or more varied is amazing, reflecting the wide range of interests among enthusiasts. The significant increase in overall sales volume suggests a healthy market that is ready to try out a variety of big bikes.
