I can totally see it happening, actually. Fast forward 20 years and people will miss the Eeco for its simplicity. It could be the very symbol of a bygone era in Indian motoring.

But only if Maruti discontinues it at some point maybe. Scarcity is part of what makes something a cult classic. But as long as you can buy a new Eeco, it won't have that special appeal.

The VW Bus doesn’t have the same cultural significance as the Eeco, Nah. There is no particular lifestyle or movement with which it's associated. It's just a cheap van.

It could happen, but not for the same reasons as the VW Bus. The Eeco could become a symbol of jugaad culture – Indian ingenuity in making do with what it has.

I doubt it. Part of what made the VW Bus iconic, was its unique design. On the outside, the Eeco looks like every other boxy van out there. It's not quite a cult classic.

Never say never! Sometimes the cars we take for granted now become classics later. In fact, the Eeco's ubiquity might be to its advantage – it might become the quintessential Indian vehicle of its era.

Absolutely! The Eeco is jugaad on wheels. What makes it its superpower is its simplicity. With some basic tools and imagination you can turn it into pretty much anything. It’s the best platform to showcase Indian ingenuity.
Is the Eeco the ultimate 'jugaad' car?
30 December 2024 07:45
I get where you’re coming from but I don’t think that ‘jugaad’ is such a stretch. It's just a cheap, basic van. It’s modified out of necessity not because it’s especially special.

I would definitely say that this is up there in the potential for jugaad. It’s perfect for creative solutions because it’s so easy to work on and modify. Parts are also cheap and found everywhere.

I would say it's rather an enabler of jugaad, not jugaad itself. What people do with that is the real jugaad. The Eeco is just an affordable blank canvas.
Is the Eeco the ultimate 'jugaad' car?

The Eeco as a jugaad icon is something I love. It's the good old Bajaj scooter with four wheels, simple, reliable and infinitely adaptable.
Is the Eeco the ultimate 'jugaad' car?

The purest jugaad is the Eeco. It's not fancy, it's not high tech. It’s just a simple way to solve a complex problem: affordable, flexible transportation.
Is the Eeco a reflection of India's automotive priorities?
30 December 2024 07:45
100% yes. The Eeco proves that for Indians, getting from A to B on a budget is the most important thing. Fancy tech and safety features are nice but if they make the car unaffordable to the average person, it isn't worth it.

And I think it's more a reflection of income inequality in India. That’s not because people don’t care about safety, it’s because they can’t afford anything safer.
Is the Eeco a reflection of India's automotive priorities?

It's a bit of both. Yes, affordability is important, but the Eeco also gives you a lot of space and versatility that you don’t get in other cars at this price. It's a niche in the market that it's filling.
