Affordability and practicality make the Maruti Eeco Ambulance popular, but it has often been criticized for missing a few features that you find on more advanced ambulances. As a result, there has been discussion of low cost modifications that may increase the functionality and efficacy of the vehicle as an emergency medical vehicle. These ideas span the gamut from some simple storage solutions and targeted lighting to more advanced capabilities, such as a basic life support system, or a telemedicine capability. The difficulty is to reconcile these improvements with the requirement to keep the vehicle affordable and simple to maintain, particularly for use in rural or resource limited locations. Healthcare workers, engineers and automotive enthusiasts alike often spark off creative suggestions on this topic, on how to best use the Eeco as a life saving vehicle.

Absolutely! I’ve seen some clever mods that make a huge difference. Things as simple as better organization of medical supplies, better lighting, and a more robust power system for equipment can turn the Eeco into a much more effective ambulance.

If you think a few mods will make the Eeco a proper ambulance, you’re dreaming. At heart it's still just a basic van. We need purpose built ambulances, not a budget vehicle we try to polish.

I believe there is a middle ground. We can't make it into a high end ambulance, but smart, low cost mods could make it far more functional. What about a basic oxygen system or a more ergonomic layout for paramedics to work in.

I can tell you the Eeco has potential for improvement as a mechanic. A smoother ride can be achieved by upgrading the suspension, better communications can be installed and emergency lights that don't drain the battery are big improvements.

Why not crowd-source ideas from actual EMTs and paramedics? After all, it's these people who use these vehicles every day and would have the best ideas for practical, low cost improvements.

I have seen some Eeco Ambulances fitted with solar panels to power extra equipment. A simple mod if you find yourself in a place with unreliable electricity.

We should not forget about patient comfort. Just a few simple improvements, such as better insulation, a more comfortable stretcher, and improved air circulation, could really make a world of difference for patients.

What about a modular design? Standardize and make easily swappable equipment modules you can swap in or out depending on the exact needs of the healthcare provider. That could make the Eeco a lot more versatile.
