Does the dilution of the Mahindra Thar's iconic status come at the cost of the 4x2 LX Automatic variant?

Nah, it's just evolution. There are also 2WD versions of the Jeep Wrangler and it’s still an icon. The Thar's 4x4 system isn't what makes the Thar what it is; it's the Thar's looks and heritage.

There is no doubt that this waters down the Thar's image a bit. It’s as if you’ve got a sports car with an underpowered engine, it doesn’t feel right at all.

I feel it actually adds to the Thar’s status. Making it more accessible makes more people experience and appreciate what’s special about the Thar.

They made a smart move with the 4x2 version. It doesn’t quite abandon its roots, but it keeps the Thar relevant in a changing market. It’s not just about off road ability, it’s about icon status.
Does the dilution of the Mahindra Thar's iconic status come at the cost of the 4x2 LX Automatic variant?

It’s a bit of a sellout move, but I can understand why they did it. I don’t think it can hurt the Thar’s reputation too much as long as they keep making the 4x4 version.

Icons must change to survive. While it won't be for the purists, it'll attract a whole new group of fans to the Thar. That's how legends grow.
Does the dilution of the Mahindra Thar's iconic status come at the cost of the 4x2 LX Automatic variant?

I see it as Mahindra expanding the Thar family and not diluting it. There’s something for everyone now, it’s like different trim levels.
Is Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a right pick for first SUV buyers?
28 January 2025 11:15
This is perfect for first timers wanting something different. It’s not the most refined of them all but it has character and it’s not as intimidating as a full size SUV.
Is Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a right pick for first SUV buyers?
28 January 2025 11:15
I'd say it's not ideal. For first time SUV buyers, it will be a bit raw compared to something like Creta. You get used to the visibility and size.

It all depends on what you are after. If you don’t mind a little discomfort and want something that stands out, go for it. If a smooth, quiet ride is a priority, however, look elsewhere.

I think it's a great choice. It’s not too big, has good ground clearance for Indian roads and the automatic makes it easy to drive. Plus, it's a conversation starter!
Is Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a right pick for first SUV buyers?

It might be a bit much as a first SUV. The high seating position, and the boxy shape can make it tough for those who are used to driving sedans or hatchbacks. However, as you’re adventurous, why not?
Is Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a right pick for first SUV buyers?
28 January 2025 11:15
You know what? It's actually pretty good for beginners. It has a high seating, to give you a commanding view, and a rugged build, so you won’t worry about every little scratch or bump.

If you’re a first timer with a bit of a wild streak, I’d recommend it. And that's what makes it special, it's not your average SUV. You just need to prepare for a different driving experience.
Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?
28 January 2025 11:15
The auto tranny honestly makes it way more fun in city traffic. When I'm stuck in a jam I don't miss rowing gears. The weekends are still plenty fun.
Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?
28 January 2025 11:15
Sure, it definitely pulls some of the raw feeling off it. Manhandling a stick shift through rough terrain is half the fun of a Thar. It's just too civilized for the auto.
Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?
28 January 2025 11:15
I suppose it's a fair trade off. It’s a bit of a loss of that old school charm, but you gain so much in terms of daily usability. Plus, the auto is pretty responsive when you need to be.
Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?
28 January 2025 11:15
I've driven both and I'd say the auto makes it easier to focus on the terrain when off road. You don't spend your life thinking about moving.
Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?
28 January 2025 11:15
Now it's a different kind of raw. Rather than fighting the gearbox you can enjoy the suspension work and how it deals with bumps.
Does the Thar 4x2 LX feel less 'raw' because of the automatic transmission?
28 January 2025 11:15
It very much does take away from the 'raw' experience, but the new dimension of smoothness that the auto allows is pretty addictive once you've embraced it.
