Does the dilution of the Mahindra Thar's iconic status come at the cost of the 4x2 LX Automatic variant?

Mahindra Thar has earned its reputation as a no nonsense, go anywhere vehicle with its 4x4 capability and rugged design. Enthusiasts and potential buyers are debating the merits of the new 4x2 LX Automatic variant, which doesn't include the four-wheel drive system. They argue that this new variant may make the Thar more available to a wider audience and drives up the name and respect. However, some argue that by taking away some of the most important off road features Mahindra is stripping away the very thing that makes the Thar, the Thar. The question we are going to address is the balance between keeping a core identity of a vehicle and responding to market needs. The article also examines how automotive icons become icons and whether their evolution enhances or diminishes their legendary status.

Nah, it's just evolution. There are also 2WD versions of the Jeep Wrangler and it’s still an icon. The Thar's 4x4 system isn't what makes the Thar what it is; it's the Thar's looks and heritage.

There is no doubt that this waters down the Thar's image a bit. It’s as if you’ve got a sports car with an underpowered engine, it doesn’t feel right at all.

I feel it actually adds to the Thar’s status. Making it more accessible makes more people experience and appreciate what’s special about the Thar.

They made a smart move with the 4x2 version. It doesn’t quite abandon its roots, but it keeps the Thar relevant in a changing market. It’s not just about off road ability, it’s about icon status.

It’s a bit of a sellout move, but I can understand why they did it. I don’t think it can hurt the Thar’s reputation too much as long as they keep making the 4x4 version.

Icons must change to survive. While it won't be for the purists, it'll attract a whole new group of fans to the Thar. That's how legends grow.

I see it as Mahindra expanding the Thar family and not diluting it. There’s something for everyone now, it’s like different trim levels.
