This dude had chopped the tail and added clip-ons to his 690 and called it a 'cafe racer.' It was so uncomfortable and totally ruined the character of the bike.

I have seen a 690 with a sidecar attached. So it kind of defeated the whole purpose of having a nimble single-cylinder bike, but I guess it was unique!

That depends on what you need. As visceral a riding experience as you'll find, the 690 is still hard to beat if you're after something really raw. Also, they are a good value these days, used.

If you can find a well-maintained 2016+ model, ’d say it’s still worth it. The later ones are pretty reliable and had most of the kinks worked out.

I own a 690 now, and I’d say it still rings true. There is nothing else like its character. It just means you'll have more frequent maintenance than a newer bike.
