How is the KTM Duke 200 as an off road machine?

It’s a jack of all trades, master of none. It’s not going to excel at it, but it can handle some light off road stuff. Mixed use riding though!

Mine have been on some forest roads without any problem. The engine is torquey, and helps in slower, technical sections. Just don't push it too hard.

I’ve ridden both and really, the 200 is more than enough for daily use. And it's more fuel efficient and better to handle in tight city traffic.

The 390 is worth the upgrade. It has enough extra power to make highway riding much more comfortable, and you won't outgrow it as fast as the 200.

The 200 is ideal for pure city use. The 390 can be a little overkill and will run hotter in stop and go traffic.

I started out on a 200 and moved onto a 390. The 390 is definitely more fun, but there are times I kinda miss the nimbleness of the 200.

The 390's better brakes and suspension make for a more confidence inspiring ride and if you like weekend trips, it's a better choice.

The 200 is cheaper on insurance and maintenance, which is a big deal if that's something you're watching. It’s still a blast to ride, performance wise.

The 390 also has a better lighting and a TFT display which makes it feel more premium on the daily use. If you can afford it, it's worth the extra money.

For longer rides I find the 200 more comfortable. On longer commutes, you'll find the 390's more aggressive power delivery tiring.

In city traffic the 200 is easier to flick around but the 390's extra grunt is handy for quick overtakes. It really depends on your riding style.

Going for the 390 is a good idea if you ever plan on doing longer trips. Highway mileage can be a bit strained on the 200 for extended periods.
Is KTM Duke 200 a good bike for city commuting as a first bike?

Absolutely! The Duke 200 is a city riding perfect. It's light, quick and has enough juice to bust through traffic. I've had mine for a year now for daily commutes, and it’s been a blast.

I wouldn't recommend it as a first bike. Beginners may find the throttle a little twitchy and the upright seating position a little unusual. Perhaps begin with something a little more forgiving?

The bike is a great bike, but maintenance costs are a pain. If you don’t mind spending a little more on upkeep, then go for it. You might want to look at Japanese alternatives otherwise.

For city rides, I absolutely love my Duke 200. The only downside is that it gets pretty hot in slow moving traffic. That is something to consider if you live in a hot climate.

That depends on your city, I’d say. It's great if you've got decent roads and not too much traffic. If, however, you're stuck with pothole filled streets and constant gridlock, you may want something with softer suspension.

The riding position is one thing to be considered. It’s fun and quite sporty, but maybe not the most comfortable if you’re going to be commuting a long way. First test ride it to see if it is fit for you.
