Is the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 a secret gem or a maintenance drama?

I’ve had a MiTo 1.4 for three years now and it’s been a laugh. It’s had a few quirks, sure, but nothing major. The MultiAir engine is peppy, and in Dynamic mode it’s a proper little pocket rocket. If you stay on top of maintenance, it hasn’t been too bad.

Hidden gem? More like a hidden time bomb. My friend had one; it was in the shop more often than on the road. You name it, electrical gremlins, turbo issues. A shame because it's a great looking car but no way would I touch one with a ten foot pole.

I believe it’s somewhere in between. The MiTo is definitely a fun car to drive and will turn heads, but you should expect more frequent maintenance than your average Japanese hatchback. If you can work on it and you have a good relationship with an Alfa specialist it can be a lot of fun.

I would say that as a former MiTo owner, it's a gem... with a few rough edges. The trick is maintaining a good example and keeping up with preventative maintenance. If you like Italian flair, the driving experience is worth it.

Let’s be real, if you don’t take care of your car, any car can be a maintenance nightmare. Yes, the MiTo has its issues, but so do so many other cars. The difference is that when the MiTo is running well, it puts a smile on your face that few other small cars can.

I've done a couple of MiTos and they're not the worst things in the world. The MultiAir system can be finicky, though if you use the right oil and change it often enough, it tends to be OK. The usual biggest problems are neglect or bad previous owners.

It’s a hidden gem in my book for sure. You get Italian styling and a sporty drive for relatively little money where else? So, just budget for maintenance and enjoy the ride. Yet another Fiesta or Corsa it’s way more interesting.

It would be a beautiful headache. I owned one for two years, and though I loved driving it, the constant worry about what could go next wrong took some of the fun out of ownership. If you can’t handle that kind of relationship with your car, look elsewhere.
But how does Alfa Romeo’s DNA system actually affect how the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 drives?

It’s actually pretty cool, this DNA system. In Dynamic mode the throttle response gets noticeably sharper and the steering a bit heavier. On twisty roads it really wakes the car up. All weather mode has saved my bacon a few times in the rain, but normal is good for everyday driving.

I honestly think it's mostly placebo. Yes, you can tell somewhat of a difference in throttle response, but the car doesn't suddenly become a different beast. For me, I leave mine in Normal most of the time and I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

DNA is not a gimmick and it is not magic, but it is more than that. It does make the car feel more alive in the lower gears, in dynamic mode at least. It also seems less intrusive with the traction control. In slippery conditions, all-weather mode is genuinely useful, the car feels more planted.

As a driver in different conditions, the DNA system is a useful feature. All weather mode is the one to have more confidence in poor conditions while dynamic mode works great for those weekend blasts. It's not revolutionary but it's good to finally have it in our autos.

The DNA system is very effective, I think, if you drive it right. But if you’re just pottering around town, you probably won’t notice much difference. Dynamic mode is the one to have if you want to push the car a bit, particularly in the turbo models which get more torque.
But how does Alfa Romeo’s DNA system actually affect how the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 drives?

DNA is one of those things you don’t think you need until you do, which is regularly. I’m constantly switching back and forth between modes based on my mood or the road conditions. It's not completely night and day, but it does quietly transform the car's character.
But how does Alfa Romeo’s DNA system actually affect how the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 drives?

The DNA system is most noticeable in the steering feel, I find. I prefer the steering to have some nice weight in Dynamic mode. But the throttle changes are there, just less dramatic. I rarely use all weather mode unless things are really bad, but it’s handy.
So how does the 8C Spider’s driving experience measure up against today’s supercars?
30 January 2025 09:41
It's a completely different experience. The 8C Spider seemed rawer and more connected to the road. But modern supercars are faster and yet feel a little bit sterile.
So how does the 8C Spider’s driving experience measure up against today’s supercars?
30 January 2025 09:41
It’s a bit outdated, honestly. They are just so much more capable, and easier to drive fast, than modern supercars. More a grand tourer than a true supercar, the 8C is.
So how does the 8C Spider’s driving experience measure up against today’s supercars?
30 January 2025 09:41
It’s a more pure driving experience than the 8C Spider. It’s simply you, and the machine, with no fancy driver aids or electronic nannies. That's becoming rare these days.
So how does the 8C Spider’s driving experience measure up against today’s supercars?
30 January 2025 09:41
At legal speeds, I'd say it's more enjoyable. Super cars today are so fast that you can’t really enjoy them on public roads. With the 8C, you can have fun without breaking the sound barrier.
So how does the 8C Spider’s driving experience measure up against today’s supercars?
30 January 2025 09:41
It's apples and oranges. The 8C is about the experience, the sound, the feel the look. Today’s supercars are about tech and outright performance. Both have their place.
