Is the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 actually any fun to drive, or is this merely style over substance?

In its own way, the MiTo is fun. It's not a track weapon, but it's great for zipping around town and an occasional B road blast. The car feels light on its feet and the turbo engine has a nice character. Also, it looks like it belongs in the future, and not in the 2016 of most cars in its class.

I came from a Fiesta ST and the MiTo isn’t quite as sharp but it’s still a hoot to drive. The Italian flair has a different kind of charm than outright performance. A nice touch is that the DNA system lets you dial up the fun when you want it.

The MiTo 1.4 is the kind of car that puts a smile on your face, as a daily driver. It's not comfortable enough for a long distance ride, but it's comfortable enough for commuting and can still be fun if you want it to be. It has decent punch for overtaking, thanks to the turbo, and it's fun enough on twisty roads to be enjoyable.

There's a reason I think people are too quick to dismiss the MiTo's driving dynamics. It’s not a hardcore hot hatch, but it’s a nice balance between comfort and sportiness. It could be a more communicative steering, but in short overall it’s a fun little car to live with day to day.

Now I have my MiTo 1.4 for five years and it is solid enough. Regular maintenance is key. I have only had one issue and that was a faulty sensor which was a cheap fix. A lot of the bad rep I feel is because people don't take care of their cars.

Alfas aren’t Toyota reliable, but they’re not as bad as people make out. For 60,000 miles, my MiTo has been mostly trouble free. The trick is to find a good example that is well maintained and look after servicing.

I work at an independent garage and we get our fair share of MiTos. They’re not the worst cars in the world, but they have their quirks. The MultiAir system can be expensive to fix if it goes wrong and electrical issues are common. However, with good care they can be decent every day drivers.

I’ve had mixed experiences with the MiTo. When it runs well it is a fun car but I’ve had a few niggling issues. Not major, but annoying enough. The car is still a car that I love, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone that isn’t ready for a little extra TLC.

The reliability issues are overblown, I think. It’s not Japanese level reliable, but what do you expect from a characterful Italian car? The few issues I had were small and easily fixed, mine's been great. It’s all about perspective and expectations.

MiTos are usually good cars, especially if you know that I was also an Alfa tech. If taken care of, the 1.4 engine is pretty robust. We saw most of the issues from neglect or bad previous ownership. If you keep on top of maintenance, you’ll probably have a great experience.

I have three MiTos and they've all been different. The first was problematic, the second nearly perfect and the current one is somewhere in the middle. I think the mixed reputation is due to a lot of variation between individual cars.

Isn’t the reliability thing part of the Alfa experience? It's never had any catastrophic moments, but my MiTo has had its moments. While it's more engaging than most of its rivals to drive, that's enough to make the occasional hiccup worth it in my book.
What is the long term reliability of the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 interior?

I've had my MiTo for six years now and the interior has surprisingly held up. Most of the plastics haven’t scratched, and the leather seats still look great. The only problem I had was the gear knob which got a little worn.

The interior is honestly a bit of a letdown. At first glance it looks good, but pretty quickly you start to notice the cheap plastics. The rattle in my center console drives me nuts. The problem is not terrible but it’s not up to par with some competitors.

The MiTo’s interior is a mixed bag, I think. It's cool and Alfa design, but some of the materials could be better. With that said, mine has held up pretty well over 50,000 miles. Everything is fine, just a few minor wear marks on high touch areas.

I've owned a MiTo and a Mini and would say the Alfa's interior is more stylish, but less hardwearing. The seats are comfy and have held up fine, but some of the switchgear have felt a bit loose after two years.

I really like the way my MiTo's interior looks, especially that pod like instrument cluster. After 4 years it has held up decently, but my buttons are starting to lose the silver paint on some of them. It’s still more special than most economy cars, though.

The MiTo’s interior is fine for what it is. It’s not premium, but it shouldn’t be. Now mine is 7 years old and it still looks pretty good. The trick is taking care of it, and I use interior protectants and clean it often.

In fact, I think I've found the MiTo's interior to be quite durable. Most surfaces have resisted wear, and the sporty seats have kept their shape well. The only negative is that the piano black trim gets every speck of dust and fingerprint.

As a Japanese car guy, I was worried about the MiTo’s interior quality. So after 3 years I'm pleasantly surprised. It's not perfect - the glovebox feels a bit flimsy - but it's held up better than I thought it would. It still makes me smile every time I get in.
