Is the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 actually any fun to drive, or is this merely style over substance?

Alfa Romeo is a brand that has built a reputation for producing cars that have a bit of flair and driving excitement, and the MiTo 1.4 is sold as a sporty compact hatchback. But does this reputation hold up in the real world? While some owners love the car's peppy turbocharged engine and agile handling, others feel the driving dynamics it promises just aren't there. The DNA system, steering feel and suspension setup are things that all contribute to the overall driving experience. But can it compete with rivals like the Mini Cooper or Audi A1 for driver engagement? So, does the MiTo 1.4 bring the fun of driving or is it all about parking lot looks?

There's a reason I think people are too quick to dismiss the MiTo's driving dynamics. It’s not a hardcore hot hatch, but it’s a nice balance between comfort and sportiness. It could be a more communicative steering, but in short overall it’s a fun little car to live with day to day.

The MiTo 1.4 is the kind of car that puts a smile on your face, as a daily driver. It's not comfortable enough for a long distance ride, but it's comfortable enough for commuting and can still be fun if you want it to be. It has decent punch for overtaking, thanks to the turbo, and it's fun enough on twisty roads to be enjoyable.

I came from a Fiesta ST and the MiTo isn’t quite as sharp but it’s still a hoot to drive. The Italian flair has a different kind of charm than outright performance. A nice touch is that the DNA system lets you dial up the fun when you want it.

In its own way, the MiTo is fun. It's not a track weapon, but it's great for zipping around town and an occasional B road blast. The car feels light on its feet and the turbo engine has a nice character. Also, it looks like it belongs in the future, and not in the 2016 of most cars in its class.

I honestly don't think it's much more than style. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad car to drive, but I just don’t think it’s enough Alfa Romeo for me. Steering is a bit numb and suspension is too soft to drive spiritedly.

I’ve had my MiTo for two years and I’m still enjoying it. Not razor sharp like some rivals, but with a character that even makes mundane drives fun. The DNA system actually makes a real difference in how the car drives.

I believe the fun depends on what you expect. You may be disappointed if you're coming from a proper sports car. The MiTo is a blast compared to most economy hatchbacks. It handles well for what it is and the turbo gives it a nice punch.

Having previously owned hot hatches, I can honestly say the MiTo 1.4 is a fun car to drive. It’s not the fastest thing out there, but in Dynamic mode it feels nimble and eager. It’s direct steering that loves being thrown into corners. But it's definitely more than just a pretty face.
