And I’ve done a few mods to my MiTo, which have been a blast. The MultiAir engine is really woken up by a simple ECU remap. Now it feels like a different car!

I think the MiTo looks best stock, personally. The designers at Alfa knew what they were doing. Maybe some nice wheels, but anything beyond that just ruins the lines.

The biggest difference for me was suspension upgrades. Lowering springs and different shocks really tightened up the handling. Now, it's much more fun in the corners.

I have seen some really tastefully modded MiTos, and some absolute disasters. It's all about subtlety. Don't try to make it something it is not, enhance what is already there.

The issue with modding the MiTo is parts availability. It's not like a MINI or a Golf where you can see stuff everywhere. Good quality parts are really hard to come by.

I’m all for performance mods, but I wouldn’t do major engine work. These are pretty complicated MultiAir engines and messing around with them too much can cause reliability issues.

None of the mods I did to my MiTo made more difference to its handling than a good set of tires. The simplest of things can be the most effective.

Modding is fun, but it’s worth thinking about how that affects resale value. A modded MiTo will have some buyers falling in love with it, others will run a mile. The extent of the work depends on your long term plans for the car.

I believe the trick with modding the MiTo is to accentuate its Italian character. Get mods that make it feel more like a proper Alfa (not trying to make it into something it’s not).

I've had my MiTo for three years now and it’s been surprisingly reliable. Only routine maintenance so far. With newer models, I think Alfa has really stepped up their game.

It’s still an Alfa, let’s be real. Than I'd like to admit mine's been in the shop too. It’s a constant headache of electrical gremlins. The car itself I love but the reliability is certainly not up there with Japanese brands.

My MiTo has actually been more reliable than my friend's MINI. My Alfa has been pretty solid, but the MINI seems to have more quirky issues. Maybe I got lucky?

It's not Toyota reliable, but it's not as unreliable as some people will make out. It's somewhere in the middle. You have to go into ownership with open eyes.

I feel the reputation of being unreliable is a bit old. It’s pretty reliable, my MiTo, but you have to keep on top of maintenance more than you do with other brands.

It doesn’t quite match the build quality of its German rivals, so more rattles and minor issues will occur over time. And, in terms of major mechanical problems, it’s not bad at all.
Why are the Alfa Romeo MiTo's quirky styling choices?
30 January 2025 09:19
I love the MiTo's looks! It's got character, something most boring hatchbacks don't have. The rear lights are just cool, and that front end is distinctive.
