Pretty face? Absolutely. Driver's car? Depends on your definition. On twisty roads it's fun, but can be a handful. No as polished as a Golf GTI but with more character.

For those who care about style and uniqueness it's a driver's car, I'd say. It’s not the fastest, it’s not the most reliable, but it has a soul that a lot of modern cars don’t have.

But the 147 is definitely more than just looks. In addition, the chassis is well balanced and the Twin Spark engines are rev happy. This is a car that likes to be driven.

Face it, most people buy the 147 for its looks. It’s a decent drive, nothing spectacular. It’s not a pure driver’s car, though, mostly due to maintenance headaches.

I’ve owned several hot hatches, and the 147 is definitely the most entertaining. It's not the fastest straight line car, but it really is a joy in the corners.
What's up with the Alfa Romeo 147's 'Selespeed' transmission?

Selespeed is the devil's transmission. One in my 147 was nothing but trouble. Jerky shifts, random neutral drops, and expensive repairs. Stick to manual!

I actually love my Selespeed 147. It’s actually quite fun to drive once you learn its quirks. It’s like a PlayStation controller for your car!

Selespeed was ahead of the time, but the tech wasn't ready yet. Selespeed was trying to be what modern dual clutch boxes are.

It's a mixed bag. It’s great for city driving when it works. It’s hard to recommend, however, because of reliability issues. Get one and you’ll need to budget for repairs.

I've driven Selespeed and manual 147s and I honestly would rather have the manual. Selespeed robs you of that classic Alfa engagement.

Don't believe the hype about Selespeed, it's not all bad. It is also quite reliable provided there is regular maintenance and software update. It’s no worse than other early automated manuals.
What's up with the Alfa Romeo 147's 'Selespeed' transmission?

It's a love-hate relationship. Selespeed can be frustrating, but when it works, it shifts faster than I ever could. No clutch in traffic is nice plus.

If you are buying used, avoid Selespeed like the plague. It’s a ticking time bomb for expensive repairs unless you have detailed service history.

Opening the rear glass hatch instead of the whole trunk felt like I was in a spy movie, the first time I did it. But so needless, yet so cool!

One guy followed me for 10 minutes to ask me about the car. I ended up having a 30 minute Alfa chat in a random parking lot. The Brera owners are a really friendly bunch!

It’s nice that the key fob is shaped like the Alfa shield, but I always worry it’ll stab me in the pocket!

I also love that the start button is on the steering column. Starting up a jet engine every time it feels like. Small thing, but I never get tired of it.

The first time I heard the V6's cold start, I thought it was for some reason. It just has a special growl to it when it's warming up, turns out. I now look forward to it every morning.

I once had the car parked and all four windows rolled down on their own. It scared the life out of me, but it's just one of those Alfa 'features' I guess!
