The 147 GTA is a beast! There is no V6 sound quite like that in the hot hatch world. Yeah, it’s not the fastest in a straight line, but it certainly has character.

I've driven the GTA and the Golf R32 and the VW is more composed. With all that power going to the front wheels, the Alfa is exciting, but a handful.

The GTA is a flawed gem. The chassis struggles to cope, but it's got an amazing engine. But dammit, I’d still rather have it than a Focus RS any day, because it’s just so damn dramatic.

This is a hot hatch for connoisseurs. Not the most practical or the fastest, but probably the most special. The price of admission alone is that engine note.

I can personally say that it is a mixed bag as an ex GTA owner. Such an incredible looking engine, but torque steer for days and it's thirsty as hell. Wouldn't trade the experience though!

The hot hatch equivalent of a muscle car is the 147 GTA. All engine, questionable handling. Fun, but not as well-rounded as some rivals.

It’s the hot hatch for the person with his heart in his head. Not the best on paper, but it makes you feel special every time you get in it.

I’d say the GTA is a spiritual successor to the Lancia Delta Integrale more than a real competitor to modern hot hatches. It's all about the emotion.

The bane of 147 ownership is electrical issues. You name it, random warning lights, central locking failures. Most are easy fixes if you know what you’re doing, honestly.

The suspension wear is real. I've replaced bushings and arms more times than I can remember. It’s worth it, though, for the handling. Just budget for it.

The Twin Spark engines timing belt failures are over hyped. If you change it on schedule then you're fine. If you're one of the rare people to have one, the real headache is the Selespeed transmission.

I have my 147 for years now with not many issues. Regular maintenance is key. These cars aren't unreliable, they're just unforgiving if you don't take care of them.

Rust is the biggest problem, especially on early models. Before you buy, check the arches and sills carefully. Everything else is manageable.

The issues are what make the whole thing charming, honestly. If you wanted trouble free motoring, you’d buy a Corolla, but it’s an Alfa. The 147 has soul, and that means quirks.

I have also had German and Japanese cars and my 147 hasn't been more problematic. All you need to do is to find a well maintained example and just keep on top of servicing.

Parts availability was the deal breaker for me. Some of the components are expensive and hard to find. Before buying, make sure you have a good Alfa specialist close by.

The vast majority of issues are blown out of proportion. Things go wrong, yes, but no more than other cars of its age. It more than makes up for the driving experience.
Is the Alfa Romeo 147 a pretty face or a true driver's car?

If you own a 147 GTA, as I do, you will know it is a true driver's car. It shows razor sharp handling, and the V6 engine sound is intoxicating. It's not just about looks!

I've been in both the 147 and its competitors and honestly it isn't up to par in performance. The steering is nice, but the engines, apart from the GTA, lack punch relative to the opposition.

It's a bit of both, really. The 147 has that Alfa charm but it doesn't handle as well as some German alternatives and is nowhere near as refined or powerful. It’s more engaging than most hatchbacks, though.
