Why are the Alfa Romeo MiTo's quirky styling choices?

by Sukhmandeep Kaurover 1 year ago0 views9 comments
The Alfa Romeo MiTo is something of a design icon and for good reason, as it has some rather unusual styling touches that help it stand out from the supermini crowd. The MiTo's appearance has been a talking point with car enthusiasts and design critics alike — from its front grille to its teardrop rear lights. Some praise its bold, characterful look as a refreshing departure from more conservative designs in its class. Some people find certain aspects of its styling polarizing, or even off putting. It often gets into the nitty gritty of certain features like the frog face front fascia or general dimensions of the car. We also discuss how the design has stood the test of time since the MiTo's introduction and whether its quirky styling helps or hinders the car's appeal on the used car market.

Being a design student, I know what Alfa intended to do with the MiTo. This is a brash attempt at bringing some of their classic design language into a modern small car. Just because not everything works doesn't mean it's not far more interesting than playing it safe.

I love the side profile and the rear, but the front end is a bit much for me. It's sporty, compact and it really works. The acquired taste is just the face.

In the used market, I actually think the quirkiness helps it. Still, it looks unique and unique can be interesting to some buyers who want something a little different from other cars in their era.

The MiTo is a polarizing design that really is an Alfa. It's got that Italian flair. It might not age as well as some more conservative designs, but at least it’s not boring.

I think Alfa took it a bit too far on the styling. They couldn't decide if they wanted to be cute or aggressive, so they muddled it together into this weird thing.

But that’s part of its charm, it’s definitely quirky. I respect that, it's not trying to please everyone. On top of that, those LED taillights look pretty modern even today.

I grew into the styling of it. It seemed weird at first, but now I really like how it really stands out in a parking lot full of the samey cars.

From the front, I honestly think it looks like a squished frog. I give Alfa credit for trying something different, but it’s just not my thing.

I love the MiTo's looks! It's got character, something most boring hatchbacks don't have. The rear lights are just cool, and that front end is distinctive.
