General information and overview

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is a subcompact SUV built on a Toyota-Suzuki co-developed platform, featuring a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol hybrid engine paired with a strong electric motor. It offers three transmission modes including an intelligent hybrid system that optimizes fuel efficiency. With dimensions suited for urban and semi-urban Indian roads, its ground clearance of around 190-210 mm helps in better ride quality and rough terrain handling. The cabin emphasizes comfort and premium touches such as ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and a touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety is a key highlight with six airbags standard across trims, ABS, EBD, ESC, and TPMS. The design is modern and sporty, catering to aspirational buyers who want style and substance. Despite a slightly cramped boot compared to some competitors, the overall space inside is comfortable for a family of four. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is well-suited for Indian buyers looking for a technology-forward, fuel-efficient, and safe SUV with the backing of Toyota’s reputed reliability.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder impresses with its refined hybrid powertrain that balances performance and fuel efficiency exceptionally well for urban and highway use. Its contemporary styling, spacious yet ergonomic cabin, and premium features like ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, and six airbags elevate it above many rivals in the subcompact SUV segment. The turbocharged hybrid engine provides smooth acceleration and confident highway overtakes despite its modest displacement. Ride comfort and handling are well tuned for Indian roads, making it a practical choice for families and professionals alike. While the boot space is on the smaller side and the interior design shares elements with the Maruti Fronx, the Toyota brand’s reliability and superior safety package justify the slight premium. Overall, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder is a balanced offering in the hybrid SUV space, ideal for buyers who want a practical, feature-rich vehicle with a strong focus on fuel economy without compromising on drive quality or build quality. It stands out well in today’s increasingly eco-conscious Indian market, especially for those seeking a low-running-cost vehicle with modern amenities and urban appeal.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder impresses with its modern design, spacious interior, and smooth hybrid powertrain that offers effortless city driving and confidence on highways. It stands out for combining Toyota’s reliability with a practical, stylish package, making it well-suited for urban professionals and small families. The ride quality is composed, thanks to effective suspension tuning and high ground clearance that make it comfortable over rough Indian roads. The cabin is thoughtfully laid out with premium features and six airbags, prioritizing safety and driver convenience. While the engine noise under hard acceleration and some interior plastics could be better, its fuel efficiency, build reliability, and engaging driveability outweigh these minor flaws. It is a compelling choice for those seeking a value-packed compact SUV with hybrid efficiency and solid safety credentials in the Indian market.

Recent news and announcements

I've been tracking the Toyota Urban Cruiser lineup closely in India, and the buzz right now centers on the production-spec Urban Cruiser EV, teased for the first time with a launch imminent alongside its Maruti e Vitara twin. This rebadged BEV rocks monopod LED headlamps with pixel-style DRLs differing from the e Vitara's Y-shape, plus BEV badging on the charging flap and a cleaner, less creased silhouette with restyled wheels for that premium Toyota vibe. Expect the same Heartect-e platform with 49kWh or 61kWh batteries driving front-axle motors—144hp/189Nm for the smaller pack offering 440km range, or 174hp/189Nm for the 61kWh's 543km ARAI-rated range. Inside, it mirrors the e Vitara with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital driver's display, fixed glass roof, ventilated seats, 10-way power driver's seat, ambient lighting, seven airbags, 360-degree camera, TPMS, and Level-2 ADAS, all backed by an eight-year battery warranty and a projected five-star Bharat NCAP rating. Pre-bookings are open nationwide, positioning it against rivals like Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV in the Rs 19-24 lakh bracket, delivering sophisticated efficiency for urban Indian drives.

I've been tracking the Toyota Urban Cruiser lineup in India closely, and the big news is the reveal of the Urban Cruiser Ebella, Toyota's first dedicated electric SUV, unveiled just last month with pre-bookings now open nationwide. This midsize EV, built on the Heartect-e platform shared with the Maruti e Vitara, comes in three variants—E1 with a 49kWh battery delivering 144hp, 189Nm and 440km ARAI range, and E2/E3 with a punchier 61kWh pack offering 174hp and up to 543km range—all front-wheel-drive with fast DC charging from 10-80% in 45 minutes. Expected pricing kicks off around Rs 19-24 lakh on-road in Delhi, backed by an 8-year battery warranty and a 60% assured buyback. It packs premium kit like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 10.1-inch driver's display, ventilated seats, powered driver seat, 7 airbags, 360-degree camera, and level-2 ADAS, aiming for a 5-star Bharat NCAP like its sibling. Styling stands out with triangular LED headlights, a rear light bar, and alloy wheels, positioning it squarely against the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, MG ZS EV, and Tata Curvv EV. Meanwhile, the original petrol Urban Cruiser has been discontinued, with the Taisor micro-SUV carrying the affordable torch from Rs 8.24 lakh. Deliveries should ramp up by mid-2026, making this a solid bet for urban EV adopters craving Toyota reliability.

I've been tracking the Toyota Urban Cruiser lineup closely in India, and the standout update right now is the reveal of the Urban Cruiser Ebella, Toyota's first dedicated electric SUV for our market, based on the Heartect-e platform shared with the Maruti e Vitara. Revealed in January 2026 with pre-bookings now open nationwide, it launches fully this year with expected ex-showroom prices from Rs 19.06 lakh to Rs 24.42 lakh in Delhi. Three variants—E1 with a 49kWh battery delivering 144hp, 189Nm and 440km ARAI range, plus E2 and E3 with the larger 61kWh pack offering 174hp and a class-leading 543km range—all front-wheel-drive. Design highlights include triangular LED headlights, segmented DRLs, alloy wheels, and a rear LED lightbar, paired with premium interiors like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 10.1-inch digital driver's display, fixed glass roof, ventilated seats, and powered driver's seat. Safety is top-notch with 7 airbags, 360-degree camera, level-2 ADAS, and an expected 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, backed by an 8-year battery warranty. It positions strongly against rivals like Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV, promising reliable Toyota EV motoring tailored for Indian roads.

Toyota has significantly expanded the Urban Cruiser lineup in India, and I'm impressed by the strategic diversification they've introduced. The latest addition is the Urban Cruiser Ebella, an electric SUV that marks Toyota's first dedicated EV offering in the Indian market. With pre-bookings already open, the Ebella arrives with two battery options—49kWh and 61kWh—delivering ranges of 440km and 543km respectively on ARAI certification. The hybrid Hyryder remains a compelling choice, featuring best-in-class fuel efficiency of 27.97 kmpl with its 1490cc engine, making it an excellent option for those seeking efficiency without sacrificing performance. Then there's the Taisor, Toyota's most affordable SUV, offering remarkable value with prices starting at 7.25 lakh ex-showroom. I find the Taisor particularly appealing for budget-conscious buyers, equipped with either a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine or a potent 1-litre turbo-petrol unit, alongside a CNG option. Each model demonstrates Toyota's commitment to offering diverse powertrains—from conventional petrol and CNG to hybrid and fully electric—ensuring that Indian customers have genuine choices across different budgets and preferences. The warranty coverage, especially the eight-year battery warranty on the Ebella, reflects Toyota's confidence in these products.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has introduced the Urban Cruiser Hyryder Festival Limited Edition, which comes with a package of 13 TGA accessories worth over Rs. 50,000. This limited edition is available for the V and G grades of both the Neo Drive and Hybrid variants. The package is designed to enhance the vehicle’s aesthetics and convenience. I think this is a great move to attract more buyers during the festive season.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s ex-showroom price ranges approximately from ₹12.7 lakh to ₹23.0 lakh depending on the variant and fuel type. The petrol automatic variants start around ₹12.7 lakh ex-showroom, whereas the CNG manual versions go up to ₹23 lakh. On-road prices vary by city due to taxes and insurance but in Delhi are estimated between ₹13 lakh and ₹23 lakh. This pricing positions it as a premium subcompact SUV offering, slightly higher than Maruti Suzuki’s sibling model Fronx, reflecting Toyota’s brand value, hybrid technology, and enhanced safety features. For the Indian buyer, this range makes the Urban Cruiser Hyryder a competitive choice when factoring in its low fuel consumption and feature list — it offers more advanced hybrid technology and safety than non-hybrid rivals in the same price segment. However, buyers focused purely on budget might find it above entry-level subcompact SUVs. In return, they gain brand reliability, better safety, and hybrid efficiency which are significant for long-term ownership in India’s urban and semi-urban environments.
November 30, 2025
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder in India is priced starting around ₹11.8 lakh ex-showroom, with on-road prices varying by city but typically landing between ₹13 lakh and ₹14 lakh for popular variants with the hybrid petrol powertrain. The slightly premium pricing compared to rivals is justified by Toyota’s brand value, hybrid technology, and added safety features such as six airbags as standard. This price positioning makes it an attractive option in the subcompact SUV segment for buyers prioritizing fuel economy, comfort, and a fuss-free ownership experience. Additionally, the hybrid powertrain can bring long-term savings on fuel costs, offsetting the initial higher investment when compared to conventional petrol models.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s hybrid powertrain delivers excellent fuel economy for Indian conditions, with real-world mileage often reported between 20 to 25 km/l depending on traffic and driving style. The hybrid system’s capability to switch to electric motor mode at low speeds greatly reduces fuel consumption in city traffic and stop-and-go conditions. On highways, steady cruising yields highly competitive mileage figures of 22-24 km/l. This balance of efficiency and smooth power makes it ideal for buyers sensitive to running costs, helping reduce fuel expenses over time without sacrificing the convenience of a petrol engine and automatic transmission.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid delivers real-world mileage in the range of 20 to 25 km/l depending on driving conditions, making it among the more fuel-efficient SUVs available in India today. This efficiency is ideal for buyers focused on low running costs, especially in city traffic and mixed driving, where the hybrid system shines by reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser debuted in August 2021 in the Indian car market as the second product of the Toyota and Suzuki partnership after the Glanza, which was a rebranded Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is rooted in the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. However, unlike Glanza, where the company simply swapped logos, the new Urban Cruiser has a few external changes that distinguish it from the Vitara Brezza. Let’s dive in to review the details of the design, style, and power of this Maruti-derived product.

Introduction

The Toyota Urban Cruiser debuted in August 2021 in the Indian car market as the second product of the Toyota and Suzuki partnership after the Glanza, which was a rebranded Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is rooted in the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. However, unlike Glanza, where the company simply swapped logos, the new Urban Cruiser has a few external changes that distinguish it from the Vitara Brezza. Let’s dive in to review the details of the design, style, and power of this Maruti-derived product.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Design and Style

Starting with the front fascia design language, the first and foremost thing is the front grille. Toyota launched the Urban Cruiser with their signature design, which takes into account vertical chrome strips on either side and horizontal slats on the grille itself. From the front, the compact SUV has a bold appearance. The SUV sports a full LED headlight unit as well as LED DRLs that are quite bright and provide good visibility at night. The fog lights are located in the same place as on the Brezza, but Toyota has added some chrome embellishing around them to enhance the premium appearance of the vehicle.

Turning to the side profile, the new Urban Cruiser gets black cladding all around, and the roof rails are non-functional. Concerning the compact SUV's rear end, it features LED tail lights, a Toyota logo in the centre, a spoiler, a silver element at the bottom, and a chrome strip with "Urban Cruiser" embossed on it. In terms of body dimensions, the car has a length of 3995 mm, a width of 1790 mm, a height of 1640 mm, and a wheelbase of 2500 mm. In addition, it gets a good ground clearance of 198 mm.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Engine and Gearbox

The same petrol engine that powers the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza also powers the new Toyota Urban Cruiser. Powering the Urban Cruiser is a BS6-compliant 1.5-litre, 1462cc, 4-cylinder K-Series petrol engine paired with Suzuki's mild-hybrid (SHVS) technology. This engine is capable of churning out 104.72 HP at 6000 rpm and 138 Nm at 4400 rpm when combined with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Interior, Instrument Cluster & Boot Space

On the inside, the new Urban Cruiser gets a comfy and decent cabin. The dashboard is finished in black, while the upholstery is light brown. The steering wheel is relaxed and holds a good grip, but it has only a tilt option. Speaking of the front seats, they are well-cushioned seats. However, the height adjustment option is for the driver’s seat only. The second row provides adequate back support but lacks under-thigh support. However, there is enough head and legroom for five tall passengers to sit and go comfortably. Unfortunately, there is no AC vent in the back row, nor is there a charging socket, but it does have a retractable armrest with two cup holders.

The instrument cluster is identical to that seen on the Vitara Brezza. It has a MID screen in the middle that displays a variety of vehicle information, and it is flanked on each side by an analogue tachometer and speedometer. The Toyota Urban Cruiser has a 328-litre boot space, which is adequate for the class. It does, however, have a 60:40 split, and more luggage space can be managed to be made by folding either side of the seat depending on the space needed.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Brakes, Suspension & Tyres

As for the braking system, the braking duties are assigned to ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The suspension is set up with a McPherson strut with a coil spring in front and a Torsion Beam with a coil spring in the back. Toyota has offered the mid variant with 16-inch steel wheels that are outfitted with 205/60 size tyres, whereas the high and premium variants are offered with 16-inch alloy wheels that are clothed with 215/60 size tyres.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Key Features

When it comes to offered features, 2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser comes loaded with dual-chamber LED projector headlamps with chrome accents, dual-function LED DRLs and turn indicators in headlamps, dual-tone interiors, auto AC, new 17.78cm smart play cast touchscreen audio with Apple CarPlay and Android, five-colour combi metre vibe lights, four-door speakers and two tweeters, engine start-stop push-button, auto rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, electric adjustable ORVMs, charging port and lamp inside boot space and many more.

For passenger safety, the SUV is offered with dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, hill hold control on all AT variants, anti-pinch driver side power window, speed-sensitive auto door lock, ISOFIX child seat restraint system, reverse parking sensors with infographic display, 5-door central locking system, driver and co-passenger seat belt reminder, childproof rear door locks, high-speed warning buzzer, side-impact protection beam, rear defogger, reverse parking camera with display and so on.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Top Speed, Acceleration & Mileage

2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser offers a top speed of 170+ kmph and accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 11.52 seconds. What’s more, the car renders decent mileage of 12.5–14 km/l in the city and 15–17.8 km/l on the highways. However, the mileage figures may vary depending on driving style or terrain.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Variants & Colour Options

Toyota has offered the new Urban Cruiser in three variants called premium, high, and mid. A total of nine colours are on offer, of which six are monotone and three are dual-tone. You can choose from Sunny White, Iconic Grey, Suave Silver, Rustic Brown, Spunky Blue, Groovy Orange, Rustic Brown with Sizzling Black Roof, Spunky Blue with Sizzling Black Roof, and Groovy Orange with Sunny White Roof. It also needs to be mentioned here that the dual-tone colour scheme is available for the high-end premium variant only.

Ex-showroom Price & On-Road Price

At present, the new Toyota Urban Cruiser is available at an ex-showroom price of Rs 9.02 lakh for the Mid MT variant and Rs 11.73 lakh for the top-end Premium AT variant. To distinguish between off-road and on-road pricing, the ex-showroom price of a car is the asking price that does not include the cost of road tax, insurance, or registration. The on-road price, on the other hand, includes all of the aforementioned costs as well as insurance, registration, a one-time road tax, an extended warranty, and all vehicle accessories. It is important to note that on-road prices in our country vary widely from state to state.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Competitors

2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser directly competes with Hyundai Venue, Renault Kiger, Kia Sonet, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV300.

Verdict - Should You Buy Toyota Urban Cruiser or not?

2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser comes with a practical cabin, mature styling, and a good powertrain with decent fuel efficiency. But Toyota could do better in terms of the addition of new features, a diesel engine variant and, of course, a sunroof. However, in this price bracket, the SUV is still capable of attracting Indian car buyers. Toyota’s after-sales service also adds to its popularity in the country.
