General information and overview

The Toyota Rush (2018) is a 7-seater compact SUV designed with emerging markets like India in mind. It features a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing roughly 105hp and 140Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, offering smooth and predictable performance. Its Fortuner-inspired SUV styling includes LED headlights, roof rails, and a bold front grille, lending a rugged and premium look. Inside, the Rush emphasizes space and comfort with three rows of seats, adjustable headrests, and well-placed cup and bottle holders, providing good ergonomics for passenger convenience. The interiors are equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-speaker sound system, two-zone climate control, and keyless entry. Safety is a strong focus with 5-star ASEAN NCAP crash rating, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and ISOFIX child-seat anchors. Ground clearance of 220mm enhances its capability on Indian roads. The Rush is a solid option for families wanting SUV robustness, flexibility, and Toyota’s reliability in one package.

The 2018 Toyota Rush is a compact seven-seater SUV built specifically for emerging markets, now anticipated in India. It features a tall stance, 220mm ground clearance, and a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 105hp, paired with either a 4-speed automatic or manual gearbox. Its design cues echo the larger Fortuner, presenting a rugged yet modern look. Inside, the Rush comes equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-speaker setup, push-button start, and safety features including multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and ISOFIX mounts. The second-row seats have a 60:40 split, and the third row provides seating with reasonable space for children or short trips. It’s positioned as a reliable, safe, and practical family SUV, ideal for city driving with the ability to manage flooded roads or light off-road conditions thanks to its SUV-level clearance and angles.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Toyota Rush (2018) is a compelling choice for Indian buyers looking for a compact 7-seater SUV that balances practicality with Toyota’s renowned reliability. Its sturdy build, 220mm ground clearance, and SUV-inspired styling make it tough and versatile for Indian road conditions. The interior feels spacious and well-equipped for its segment, offering features like push-button start, touchscreen infotainment, and a comprehensive safety kit including multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, and hill-start assist. While the 1.5-litre petrol engine with around 105hp may not thrill with outright performance, it suits urban and highway use well, providing adequate power and smooth drivability. The Toyota Rush stands out in its segment primarily for its seven-seat layout and safety credentials, challenging established rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Honda BR-V. I find it a sensible family SUV with a rugged edge and good features, ideal for those who prioritize space, safety, and dependability over sporty performance or premium luxury. It caters well to Indian families needing an affordable, practical SUV capable of handling varied terrains without complexity.

The 2018 Toyota Rush is a practical choice if you need a compact yet spacious 7-seater SUV, especially for Indian urban and semi-urban roads. Its high ground clearance of 220mm and SUV-like approach and departure angles make it confident on flooded or rough roads, a valuable trait in many Indian cities. The 1.5-litre petrol engine with 105hp paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth city driving, although it struggles to comfortably exceed 100 km/h on highways, with high RPMs at those speeds. The suspension is a bit stiff, favoring road feedback over plush comfort. Toyota’s build quality and feature set, including safety equipment like multiple airbags and stability control, position the Rush as a reliable, safe family SUV. Overall, it’s well-suited for buyers prioritizing versatility, safety, and Toyota’s trusted durability over outright performance or luxury.

Recent news and announcements

The 2024 Toyota Rush GR Sport has been updated with a new grille, a bolder front bumper design, and faux skid plate. The fender flares are now painted gloss black, and the rear bumper has a unique design. Inside, the GR Sport features an all-black interior and a larger, heavily updated touchscreen audio system. Mechanically, it remains unchanged with a 1.5-liter Dual VVT-i engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. I think these updates will keep the Rush competitive in the market.

Toyota Motor Philippines has discontinued the G variant of the Toyota Rush and replaced it with the new GR-S model. The GR-S variant, priced at P1,176,000, includes blacked-out front and rear bumpers, GR-S badging, and a new touchscreen. This move is part of Toyotas strategy to refresh its lineup and attract more buyers. I believe this change will appeal to those looking for a sportier version of the Rush.

The Toyota Rush has received an update in 2021, with all variants now coming as 7-seater SUVs. The E variant has been upgraded with improved seating capacity and now includes a reverse camera, a feature previously available only in the G grade. This update aims to cater to the needs of Filipino families who value space and safety. I think this is a great move to enhance the vehicles family-friendly features.
November 26, 2021
In 2020, Toyota Philippines updated the 5-seater E-variant of the Toyota Rush, replacing it with a 7-seater model. The E-variant also received updates, including the addition of a reverse camera as a standard feature. This change reflects Toyotas commitment to improving safety and convenience.

The Toyota Rush was launched in the Philippines on May 4, 2019. It was introduced to compete in the high-riding, bold-looking MPV segment against the Mitsubishi Xpander and Honda BR-V. The Rush came in two major variants: the 7-seater 1.5 G and the 5-seater 1.5 E. I think the Rushs entry into this segment was a smart move by Toyota.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The Toyota Rush (2018) was expected to be priced between ₹10 lakh to ₹11.75 lakh ex-showroom in India. Taking into account typical state taxes, insurance, registration, and handling charges, the on-road price could cross ₹12 lakh depending on the city. This price bracket positions the Rush as a competitive offering within the compact SUV segment, especially considering it offers a seven-seat configuration, which is less common at this price point. Compared to rivals like the Honda BR-V or Hyundai Creta, the Rush provides a balanced feature set and Toyota’s brand assurance, which justifies its premium to some extent. However, buyers should consider that this pricing targets a niche segment seeking both SUV styling and three-row seating. While the Rush might come at a slightly higher price than some compact SUVs with only five seats, the extra seating and above-average ground clearance provide added value for families who need flexibility. Overall, the pricing strategy seems well-aligned to attract Indian customers who want Toyota’s reliability with SUV versatility.
December 9, 2025
In India, the 2018 Toyota Rush is expected to be priced competitively around ₹10 lakh ex-showroom, with on-road costs likely to be between ₹11 lakh to ₹11.75 lakh depending on the city due to taxes and registration fees. This pricing places it in the mid-range SUV segment, directly competing with models like the Honda BR-V and Hyundai Creta. Given its 7-seater capacity and Toyota’s strong resale and reliability reputation, this price offers good value. The slightly higher price compared to similar petrol SUVs is justified by SUV-level ground clearance, safety features, and build quality. Buyers should factor in that while the base model pricing is attractive, added features or the TRD Sportivo trim might push the cost up further.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Toyota Rush’s 1.5-litre petrol engine delivers a mileage around 14-15 km/l in Indian city-highway mixed conditions, which is decent but not class-leading. If mileage and running costs are a priority, this SUV offers a reasonable balance, though fuel efficiency might be slightly lower than smaller or diesel SUVs. For buyers concerned about daily running expenses, considering fuel costs alongside its seating and build advantages is important.
December 9, 2025
The 2018 Toyota Rush’s mileage is on the moderate side for India, delivering around 14-15 km/l under normal city-highway mixed conditions. Considering its 1.5-litre petrol engine, the mileage balances performance and efficiency adequately. If running costs are a primary concern, this figure is reasonable but not segment-leading. The SUV’s relatively high RPM on highways might affect long-distance fuel economy, so city buyers focusing on versatility and low maintenance may find it more appealing.

The Compact SUV segment, which has flourished over the last few years will see the arrival of yet another member in the segment. The Japanese automobile giant Toyota announced the imminent arrival of the Toyota Rush in the Indian automobile market. It is already available in the international markets, going by the name of Daihatsu Rush in some Asian markets. Currently, it is available in both 5-seater and 7-seater configurations in petrol variants.

The exterior of the Toyota Rush will come in a bold new styling with premium touches and aggressive appearance. The front grill is expected to come with chrome accents and the company emblem making a strong appearance in the center. This all new model from Toyota is expected to come pre-fitted with large projector headlamps and an aggressive bumper styling housing the fog lights. The rear end of the compact SUV will be enhanced by the tail light cluster and a spare wheel to give it the proper SUV appeal.

The Toyota Rush is expected to be 4435 mm in length, 1695 mm in breadth, and 1705 mm in height along with a ground clearance of 200 mm. Reports suggest the Toyota’s upcoming new baby will be available in the Indian market with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, putting out 104 bhp of maximum power and 136 Nm of maximum torque. This would churn out a mileage of 14-15 kmpl for the petrol variant. As is expected from Toyota, the interior of the Rush will be a plush and comfortable cabin with ample space. The seven-seater version will have ample legroom and enough headroom for the average Indian customer.

The seats are expected to provide all-around support and are expected to be well-padded. The steering and the gear knob are expected to be leather-wrapped and the quality of the plastics is also expected to be good and sturdy. The boot space, although will be enough, could be increased by folding down the last row of seats which can be doubled-down to increase the boot space. The Toyota Rush will provide a healthy competition to the likes of Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Renault Duster, and Hyundai Creta.
