Toyota Land Cruiser Mini Review

01 Oct, 2024 05:13 AM

Overview

It seems that the Toyota Land Cruiser Mini has been spreading a bit of a buzz in the automotive world and there has been plenty of talking about this SUV in India where it is expected to provide a compact robust SUV option.
If you’re like me you have probably had that itch for something that has the off-road prowess and durability of a full-size Land Cruiser but just found them a little out of reach financially. So, if what they’ve delivered with the Mini version is the best of both worlds—having the Land Cruiser DNA but in a more affordable and practical package—is pleasing to me.

But why am I excited about the Land Cruiser Mini?
For decades the Land Cruiser brand has been as synonymous as any with reliability, adventure, and sound engineering. The first time I heard about the Land Cruiser Mini, I initially thought, “This could be big time.” While expected to price around ?20 lakh bracket, that’s very easily competitive against the larger sibling, but then it slots nicely into the compact SUV segment where Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny have been in the lead. But I do think it's fairly priced given the DR and that it's ready to provide the fun of off-roading without asking you to pay for it.

Design and Exterior Features
The design of the Land Cruiser Mini is actually one of those things that propelled me really into this. Boxy silhouette and ruff aesthetics reminisce to such an iconic heritage. The previews I have caught show the vehicle is running C-shaped LED daytime running lights and a large front grille along with a solid bumper, something similar to a Land Cruiser but in a more compact package.

Its dimensions are also pretty decent for a compact SUV:

Length: 4350 mm
Width: 1860 mm
Height: 1880 mm
Ground Clearance: 235 mm
It has city-friendly proportions yet is capable off-road, and this is the reason to build it this size.

Interior and Comfort
It’s comfort and modern tech inside, and I’m into it. While the Toyota Land Cruiser Mini is small, it can seat up to five passengers, and based on what I’ve heard, it should offer plenty of high-quality materials to deliver a more premium feeling despite being quite small. And it gets even better because the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It seems Toyota wants this Mini version to be just as much about tech and comfort as it is about adventure.

Power and Performance
Performance now is where things get really exciting. Rumored to borrow a 2.0L gasoline engine capable of pushing out 169 HP, the Mini isn’t exactly a slouch in this class. Some hybrid option is also in the talk, which could seduce the accelerators of better efficient fuel. At least on paper, this compact SUV appears to have the chops for some legitimate off-road performance, boasting approach and departure angles that seem highly prepared for rough ground.

Here’s a quick look at the performance specs:

Maximum Power: 169 HP
Ground Clearance: 235 mm
Approach Angle: 30 degrees
Departure Angle: 25 degrees
I believe this combo makes this one just as good on city roads as in rougher terrain. There are some serious adventures in this vehicle ahead.

Off-Road Capabilities
And as someone who loves the idea of adventure-ready SUVs, I’m really pleased to see Toyota continuing its off-road legacy with the Mini Land Cruiser. Cruising in the city or rockin' on the trails, all-wheel drive, MacPherson Strut in the front, and Multi Link in the rear should make for some smooth rides.

It has a towing capacity of up to 1500 kg, but not just for off-road, it's practical enough for a little bit of work. This SUV is covered whether you’re looking to tow a trailer for a weekend trip or carry around some heavy loads.

Safety Features
And Toyota isn’t skimping on safety either. The Land Cruiser Mini is expected to come with the latest in active safety systems, including:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD)

Of course, its passive safety features are right on par with everything else we’ve just discussed, including multiple airbags and a body structure that’s reinforced. In short, you’re covered on safety, on or off-road or any other use it may see day to day.

Comparing It With Other Competitors
When you put the Mahindra Thar or Maruti Suzuki Jimny in the same context, the Land Cruiser Mini is a premium option for compact off-road and SUV segments. While the Thar is all about ruggedness and may have more of a raw off-road appeal, Toyota’s Land Cruiser Mini will certainly offer a more refined drive. Especially if you’re willing to drop a bit more cash for a Toyota and the Land Cruiser name, it’s going to be a strong contender.

Here’s a brief comparison:

FeatureLand Cruiser MiniMahindra Thar 5-DoorMaruti Suzuki Jimny
Price Range~ ?20 lakh?14-16 lakh (expected)?12-14 lakh (estimated)
Off-Road CapabilityHighVery HighModerate
Interior ComfortPremiumBasicCompact but functional
Engine Performance169 HP (Petrol)150 HP (Diesel/Petrol)~102 HP (Petrol)

It looks like the Land Cruiser Mini will serve as a nice comparison between rugged capability and everyday usability.

Final Thoughts
So in a nutshell, I believe the Toyota Land Cruiser Mini will be a success, particularly for those drooling after a Land Cruiser but were never able to stomach the price or size of the larger models. They bring in the perfect combination of ruggedness, modern features, and generosity that strikes off perfectly from an Indian roads point of view, that is urban as well as off the beaten ones.

The Land Cruiser Mini could be a favorite with off-road fans and anyone seeking a rock-solid compact SUV with Toyota’s brand reliability, and competitive pricing. This might be the one for you if you’re interested in a vehicle that can navigate around the city and into the wild for the weekend too. When it finally hits the market, it’s high on my list of vehicles to check out, though.
