Expert opinion and recommendation
The Porsche Macan in India is a compelling blend of sports car dynamics and SUV practicality, making it one of the most engaging premium SUVs in its segment. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine delivers strong performance with 261bhp and 400Nm, paired to a sharp 7-speed PDK automatic and all-wheel drive, ensuring brisk acceleration and composed handling on Indian roads. The ride quality, especially with optional air suspension, strikes a fine balance between comfort and sportiness, while the cabin feels premium with high-quality materials, a driver-focused layout and a well-integrated infotainment system. It’s spacious enough for four adults and offers a decent 458-litre boot, making it usable for city commutes and weekend getaways. Safety is well covered with multiple airbags, stability control, 360-degree camera and advanced driver aids. While it’s not the most spacious or frugal SUV in its price bracket, the Macan stands out for its driving engagement, brand appeal and everyday usability, making it a strong choice for those who value driving pleasure in a premium SUV.
The Porsche Macan stands out in the luxury compact SUV segment in India by delivering a refined blend of sporty dynamics, premium comfort, and everyday usability. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine offers a spirited 261.5 bhp with 400 Nm torque, paired with a slick 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that ensures both brisk acceleration and smooth cruising. The Macan's handling is agile for its category, supported by all-wheel drive and an optional air suspension, making driving on Indian roads engaging yet comfortable. Inside, the cabin impresses with top-tier materials, advanced infotainment, and thoughtful features like electric adjustable seats and a heads-up display. While its exterior design is sleek and assertive, the Macan’s practicality is enhanced by a decent 458-litre boot and comfortable seating for five. However, given the high price, buyers need to be aware of the premium running costs and limited fuel efficiency. Still, for those prioritizing driving pleasure, brand cachet, and refinement, the Macan is a compelling choice in India's luxury SUV market.
Recent news and announcements
The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric is set to be unveiled on January 25, 2024, marking the second generation of the successful SUV. This new model will be fully electric, with variants including the Macan 4, Macan 4S, and Macan Turbo. The Macan Electric features a 100 kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 654 km on a single charge and supporting DC charging up to 270 kW. I think this electric transition will significantly enhance the Macans appeal in the growing EV market.
In terms of market speculation, the all-electric Porsche Macan is expected to significantly impact the luxury SUV market. With its sportscar-like performance, timeless design, and cutting-edge technology, it is anticipated to attract a wide range of buyers, especially those transitioning to electric vehicles. I believe this could be a turning point for Porsche in the EV market.
The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric retains the city-sized dimensions of its gasoline counterpart but is slightly longer. It features rear wheel steering, which reduces the turning circle at slower speeds, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The interior is inspired by the Cayenne, with a configurable digital driver instrumentation cluster, a large infotainment touchscreen, and optional passenger touchscreen. I think the blend of physical and capacitive touch controls will enhance user experience.
Porsche has introduced a new exterior color, Slate Grey Neo, for the all-electric Macan models. A 20-inch Macan S wheel has also been added to the wheel portfolio. The Macan Electrics design includes range-optimized aerodynamics, contributing to its efficient performance. I believe the new color and wheel options will appeal to buyers looking for a unique look.
Deliveries for the 2024 Porsche Macan Electric in the U.S. are expected to begin in Q4 2024. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Pricing starts at $75,300 for the base model, with the Macan 4S starting at $84,900. The pricing does not include tax, title, registration, dealer charges, or a $1,995 delivery, processing, and handling fee. I believe the pricing is competitive given the advanced technology and performance offered.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the Porsche Macan petrol starts at around ₹88–90 lakh ex-showroom for the base 2.0-litre turbo variant, with prices going up to ₹1.44 crore for the Macan S and touching ₹1.53 crore for the Macan GTS, all ex-showroom. On-road prices in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore can range from approximately ₹1.02 crore for the base model to over ₹1.75 crore for the top GTS variant, factoring in RTO, insurance and other charges. The Macan Turbo EV, the all-electric version, is priced around ₹1.65 crore ex-showroom, with on-road figures close to ₹1.8 crore. The petrol Macan is relatively more accessible compared to rivals like the BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE, but ownership costs are high due to service, parts and insurance. The EV variant is significantly pricier but offers lower running costs and a cutting-edge experience. For buyers, the base Macan makes more financial sense if performance and brand are priorities, while the EV is for those seeking future-ready tech and are comfortable with the premium.
In India, the Porsche Macan petrol variant starts at an ex-showroom price of approximately ₹88.06 lakh for the base 2.0-litre turbo model. On-road prices, depending on location and taxes, typically cross ₹1 crore, factoring in registration, insurance, and handling charges. The range peaks with higher-spec models like the Macan GTS and Macan S costing significantly more — well over ₹1 crore ex-showroom. The fully electric Porsche Macan Turbo EV, launched recently, commands a much steeper ex-showroom price near ₹1.65 crore, pushing on-road costs up accordingly. This places the Macan squarely in the ultra-premium luxury SUV bracket in India, targeting affluent buyers who value Porsche’s pedigree, technology, and exclusivity. Compared to competitors, the Macan’s price reflects its strong performance credentials and advanced features but comes with higher maintenance and insurance costs, which are crucial to consider before purchase.
Fuel efficiency information
The claimed ARAI mileage for the Porsche Macan 2.0-litre petrol is around 10.15 kmpl, but in real-world Indian conditions, expect 6–7 kmpl in the city and 8–9 kmpl on highways. Fuel costs add up quickly, especially in traffic-heavy cities, and with premium petrol being costlier, running expenses are high. For buyers concerned about mileage and long-term running costs, the Macan is not the most efficient choice; it’s better suited for those who prioritise performance and brand over fuel economy. The Macan Turbo EV, while expensive upfront, offers much lower per-km running costs and is more economical over time if charging infrastructure is accessible.
The Macan’s fuel efficiency in Indian conditions is modest, with a claimed mileage around 10.15 kmpl for the petrol 2.0-litre version. Real-world figures may be slightly lower due to city traffic and driving style. Considering the SUV’s performance focus and premium segment, mileage isn’t its strongest suit. Buyers concerned primarily with running costs should weigh this alongside Porsche’s brand and driving experience, as fuel and upkeep will be higher than typical SUVs.
