General information and overview

The 2014 Maruti SX4 stands out in India as a robust C-segment sedan with a 1.3L Fiat Multijet diesel (90hp, 200Nm) or 1.6L petrol (104hp) engine, manual transmission, and strong road presence via its sturdy body, good ground clearance, and spacious cabin with comfy seats, ample legroom, and a large boot perfect for family hauls. I appreciate its refined diesel smoothness, responsive throttle for city darting, easy handling, and reliability proven over 1.5 lakh km with regular Maruti servicing. Mileage leaders at 21.79 kmpl diesel ARAI make it economical, though suspension feels jerky on rough patches and power modest for overtakes. Basic interiors lack flair but prioritize durability, with low ownership costs via cheap spares. Discontinued post-2016, it excels for practical Indian buyers needing a dependable, low-cost runner over premium frills—ideal if you value space, efficiency, and hassle-free motoring.

The 2014 Maruti SX4 is a compact sedan available in petrol (1.6L) and Fiat-sourced 1.3 Multijet diesel options, offered across trims such as ZXi and ZDi with manual gearboxes and a focus on practicality, roomy interiors and a large boot, plus relatively simple mechanicals that make servicing straightforward at Maruti service outlets. The diesel unit is known for good fuel economy and usable mid-range torque while the petrol delivers smoother, higher-revving performance; ride and handling are competent for everyday use though suspension can feel firm on bad roads and interior plastics and features lag newer competition. For Indian buyers the SX4’s strengths are its proven drivetrain, comfortable front seats, ground clearance and robust build, while weaknesses to watch for on used cars include worn suspension components, interior wear, and maintenance history—inspect the diesel’s turbo, fuel system and service records closely before committing.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the 2014 Maruti SX4 a compelling choice for Indian buyers seeking a reliable sedan with low running costs and spacious appeal. The Fiat-sourced 1.3L Multijet diesel in the ZDi variant delivers smooth refinement, minimal turbo lag, and effortless city overtaking despite its modest 90hp, paired with a sturdy build and high ground clearance ideal for our pothole-ridden roads. Handling is easy and fun, with comfortable seats and a roomy cabin plus generous boot space that make family drives enjoyable, while its simple maintenance keeps ownership stress-free even after high mileage like 1.67 lakh km. Fuel economy shines at around 21-22 kmpl, making it a budget champion against pricier rivals. Drawbacks like slightly jerky suspension over small bumps and basic interiors don't overshadow its value—it's underpowered for highways but perfect for urban and semi-rural use. In India's resale market, well-maintained units hold decent value with Maruti's vast service network. I recommend it wholeheartedly for cost-conscious drivers prioritizing reliability over luxury; it's a no-nonsense workhorse that delivers decade-long dependability without drama.

I find the 2014 Maruti SX4 to be a sensible, no-nonsense compact sedan that prioritises space, low running costs and straightforward ownership over flashy gadgets or sporty thrills; the diesel ZDi/ZDi+ (1.3 Multijet) and the 1.6 petrol ZXi variants both deliver usable performance for city and highway use, the cabin and boot are pleasantly roomy for the segment and the ride is composed on smooth roads, but the interior materials, fit-and-finish and rear-seat comfort feel dated compared with newer rivals and the suspension can be fidgety over broken surfaces, so I would recommend the SX4 to buyers who value durability, low-cost servicing and practicality rather than cutting-edge features or top-tier refinement.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Maruti Suzuki has officially stopped the production of the SX4 sedan to make way for the new Ciaz. The SX4 had been seeing poor sales, with less than 250 cars sold on average every month in 2014. The aging car couldnt compete with newer models like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna. I think this decision was necessary to keep up with market demand.
August 9, 2014
The 2014 Maruti SX4 ZXi comes with a 1.6-liter petrol engine producing 104.7 PS of power and 145 Nm of torque. It features a 16V DOHC engine with VVT technology, and the car has a ground clearance of 180 mm and a boot space of 505 liters. The fuel tank capacity is 50 liters, and it has a kerb weight of 1200 kg. I believe these specs make it a practical choice for those looking for a C-segment sedan.
July 16, 2014
Maruti Suzuki launched the updated version of the SX4 in India, which is now 100mm longer and features a refreshed bumper and front grille with more chrome inserts. The interiors are more premium, and the car includes features like touch screen audio navigation and electronically foldable ORVMs. The SX4 is available in two new colors – Serene Blue and Granite Grey. I think these updates make the SX4 more appealing to buyers.
April 4, 2013
The facelifted SX4 also introduced a CNG variant in the VXi trim, which is tuned to return an economy of 22.1 km per kg. The sedan is powered by the same 1.6-liter petrol and 1.3-liter turbo diesel engines, but with improved ARAI efficiency figures of 16.51 kpl and 22.1 kpl respectively. The prices start at Rs 7.385 lakh for the petrol version and go up to Rs 9.21 lakh for the top-end diesel ZDi. I believe the CNG option is a great addition for cost-conscious buyers.
April 4, 2013
Maruti Suzuki showcased the SX4 crossover at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, receiving a good response from visitors. The new Indian-bound SX4 is expected to be larger than the current model, with an all-new cabin equipped with advanced and comfort features. The car will likely house the same 1.6-liter petrol and 1.3-liter diesel engines but with possible tuning for more power and efficiency. I think this new design could revitalize the SX4s market presence.

Pricing details and changes

In 2014, I saw the Maruti SX4 ZDi diesel variant priced at around ₹7.14 lakh to ₹9.57 lakh ex-showroom across India, with the petrol ZXi at similar levels starting from ₹7.14 lakh ex-showroom, reflecting its competitive positioning in the C-segment sedan space. On-road prices then added 10-15% for registration, insurance, and taxes, pushing the ZDi to about ₹8-10.5 lakh on-road in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, depending on state duties—far more affordable than Hyundai Verna or Honda City rivals. Today, as a discontinued model, used 2014 SX4s trade at ₹2-4 lakh depending on condition and mileage, offering massive savings with low depreciation after initial years. This pricing edge, combined with cheap parts and Maruti service costs under ₹5,000 per interval, makes it a steal for budget buyers. I advise negotiating hard on used units with full service history, as resale holds better for diesel versions amid rising fuel bills—its value-for-money trumps flashier options for long-term savings in India's high-mileage driving scenario.
December 14, 2025
Ex-showroom prices for the 2014 SX4 in India historically ranged roughly from around Rs. 7.1 lakh for lower-end petrol trims up to about Rs. 9.5 lakh for higher-spec petrol/diesel variants in major cities, with diesel ZDi/ZDi+ and 1.6 petrol ZXi variants positioned toward the upper side of that band; on-road prices at the time would typically add state GST, registration, insurance and handling charges, pushing the total into the Rs. 8.0–10.5 lakh bracket depending on city and variant. I view that pricing as competitive for its era because the SX4 offered a large boot and reliable powertrains at a sensible sticker, but buyers in 2025 considering used examples should factor in mileage, service history, potential diesel-emission-related costs, and spares availability—diesel Multijet engines are robust but can be costly if neglected—so negotiate based on condition and expected maintenance budget rather than list price alone.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I clock the 2014 SX4 ZDi diesel at 21-22 kmpl overall in India, with 18-20 kmpl city and 23+ kmpl highway on real roads, while petrol hits 16-17 kmpl—excellent for running costs under ₹3/km on diesel. Low maintenance seals it as a smart buy for high-km users.
December 14, 2025
Real-world mileage for the 2014 SX4 varies by engine: the 1.3L diesel commonly returns around 18–22 kmpl in mixed driving while the 1.6L petrol typically delivers in the mid-to-high teens (around 12–17 kmpl), and factory figures for diesel advertised near 21–22 kmpl; if running costs and fuel efficiency are your priority I would prefer the diesel for long-distance and high-usage buyers but check recent service records and DPF/EGR health on used diesels to avoid expensive repairs.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Maruti SX4 (2014)

Maruti SX4 is a discontinued sedan that rivaled Hyundai Verna and Honda City in India. It was placed as a premium option before the introduction of Maruti Ciaz and came with a price tag that is more similar to current generation sub 4-meter cars in India. The petrol powered SX4 was priced between INR 7.18-8.58 lakh while diesel variants were offered between INR 8.08-9.58 lakh. The visible price gap of around INR 1 lakh is still available in all Maruti cars but here, the petrol variant is much more powerful than any other car available in their current lineup.

Maruti SX4 is a discontinued sedan that rivaled Hyundai Verna and Honda City in India. The visible price gap of around INR 1 lakh is still available in all Maruti cars but here, the petrol variant is much more powerful than any other car available in their current lineup.

SX4 1.6 Petrol was good for 105 HP at 5600 rpm and 145 Nm at 4100 rpm. The engine came with a 5-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, SX4 1.3 Diesel produced 90 HP at 4000 rpm and 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. This engine was fuel efficient as Maruti claimed 21.79 kmpl of mileage from SX4. The car was quite practical as 505 liter of boot space helped the owner during long family drives while 50-liter fuel tank resulted in high overall driving range. Even 180 mm of ground clearance was passenger friendly with lesser chances of body scraping against the ground.

Maruti SX4 measures 4500 mm in length, 1735 mm in width and 1560 mm in height. Wheelbase was also quite healthy at 2500 mm. It came with decent 206/60 wheel wrapped on 16-inch alloy wheels. It was one among a limited number of Maruti cars to have automatic climate control and electrically adjustable mirrors at that time. Leather seats and navigation unit was offered on the top spec variant. Safety was given first preference here as SX4 came with dual front airbags at that time. It was bought more with a diesel engine due to high mileage.
