Maruti Swift Diesel ZDi
General information and overview
The Maruti Swift Diesel ZDi is a well-rounded hatchback that excels in various aspects. Launched in early 2018, the third-generation Swift has evolved significantly since its first generation in 2005. It features a crisp and user-friendly touchscreen system in the top variants, along with good audio quality from the 4-door speakers and 2 tweeters. The car is easy to drive in crowded city roads, thanks to its excellent visibility and comfortable driving position. The seats, though a bit low, are generally comfortable, and the suspension provides a balanced ride. The low turning radius is a significant advantage, making it ideal for urban driving. With standard features like airbags and ABS, the Swift ZDi ensures a safe and enjoyable driving experience. However, the build quality could be better, and some owners might find the need to upgrade the seats for more cushioning and thigh support. Overall, it is a great companion for daily driving needs.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Maruti Swift Diesel ZDi is a compelling choice for those seeking a reliable, efficient, and fun-to-drive hatchback in the Indian market. My experience with this vehicle has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly in crowded city roads where its excellent all-round visibility and comfortable driving position make it a joy to navigate. The cars build quality, while not the best, is acceptable given its value-for-money proposition. The suspension, though slightly on the stiffer side, provides a reasonably comfortable ride and handling, especially with the wider 18565 R15 alloy wheels. However, the absence of the diesel engine option post the BS6 norms might be a drawback for some. Overall, it remains a great daily driver with good comfort, efficiency, and a fun driving experience.
Recent news and announcements
The Maruti Suzuki Swift ZDI, a diesel variant, has been discontinued in the new generation of Swift models. Here are some relevant updates related to the previous and current context of the Maruti Suzuki Swift:
Maruti Suzuki has received over 10,000 bookings for the new Swift in just 8 days, indicating strong market demand despite the absence of a diesel variant. The new Swift features significant updates, including improved safety features like 6 airbags and electronic stability program. I think this rapid booking response shows that consumers are embracing the new features and engine options.
The new-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift, launched in May 2024, does not include a diesel engine option, marking the end of the ZDI variant. The new models are powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine or a CNG option. I believe this shift towards petrol and CNG is a strategic move to comply with evolving emission norms and consumer preferences.
The previous Maruti Suzuki Swift ZDI, with its 1,248 CC DDiS diesel engine, offered a mileage of 28.40 KM/L and was priced at around Rs. 7.57 lakh. This variant was known for its fuel efficiency and torque. I believe the discontinuation of this variant might disappoint some loyal diesel fans, but the new petrol and CNG options offer compelling alternatives.
The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift has introduced several new features, including rear AC vents, a 360-degree camera, and a free-standing infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. These updates enhance the overall driving and passenger experience. I think these features will make the new Swift more appealing to a wider range of buyers.
Pricing details and changes
The pricing of the Maruti Swift Diesel ZDi in India varies based on the location and the specific variant. Historically, the ex-showroom price for the top variant, ZDi, could cross the one million mark. On-road prices, including taxes and other costs, would typically be higher by around 10-15. For instance, the on-road price for the Maruti Swift ZDi AMT could be around Rs. 1.2 million to Rs. 1.3 million, depending on the city. This pricing places the Swift in a competitive segment, often bordering on sedan territory, but its compact size and features make it a strong contender in the hatchback market.
Fuel efficiency information
The Maruti Swift Diesel ZDi offers impressive mileage, making it a cost-effective choice for daily driving. In my long-term review, the car delivered an average mileage of 16.65 kml, with the best mileage recorded at 19.5 kml and the worst at 13.8 kml. This efficiency translates to a fuel cost of approximately Rs. 4.08 per kilometer, which is quite economical given the current fuel prices in India.
