Mahindra Scorpio Getaway Review
Expert Review by Maxabout
Mahindra has been ruling the SUV segment of Indian automobile industry for more than a decade now. Mahindra Scorpio has been revered as one of the most sold and sought-after SUVs that the company has launched in the market. The SUV ruled Indian roads for over a decade following which Mahindra decided to launch the getaway version. Thus, Scorpio Getaway was brought into limelight towards the middle of 2007. Getaway basically falls in the pick-up segment and is aimed towards the younger generation owing to its tough looks. Scorpio Getaway is slotted in the pick-up segment or the lifestyle SUV segment and Mahindra knows this segment is at nascent stage in India, it wants to be the leader in this niche segment. The Getaway is a new category creating offering from the Scorpio stable.
The new lifestyle product is based on the Scorpio platform and sports a grand deck that can carry various equipment & gear as per your lifestyle needs. It exudes ruggedness and style and is an extension of the go-getting persona of young Indians who do not shy of flaunting their success & lifestyle. The new Scorpio Getaway packs the DNA of the Scorpio into a lifestyle SUV. This vehicle complements the lifestyle of a growing breed of young adventurous Indians who work hard and play hard. They refuse to compromise on luxury and style, requiring a vehicle that can take them and their gear around in comfort as per their lifestyle needs. The Scorpio Getaway is available in 2WD and 4WD options and comes in 4 attractive colours. It pumps its power from its 2600cc common-rail diesel engine (CRDe). M&M has not compromised on the safety aspect of the vehicle as well. The globally certified safety features include crash protecting crumple zones, child lock, collapsible steering and side intrusion beams. Also, the tubeless tires, voice assist system and remote locking / unlocking of the vehicle are the additional safety features.
Exterior
Let us start with the front fascia. The bumpers bear the same colour as that of the car’s body. Along with the headlights, fog lamps have been fitted which are much brighter than that of Scorpio SUV. The rear-view mirrors can be adjusted electronically by the driver as per their convenience. The tires are tubeless which gives a better balance of the car and additionally gives a better layering of protection. These tires have a double layering of wheel covers which safeguards them while the car is in motion. The tires are made up of pure steel with 16-inch rims. These tires are fit for both on-roads as well as off-road purposes which is the reason why Scorpio Getaway is a very balanced car. The ratio of traction control is sufficient and this makes the tires even more durable for any form of terrains which the car is treading upon.
Interior
There might not be leather seats but what strikes a chord with the driver is the steering column which can be tilted as per our convenience. Both the variants of Scorpio Getaway are equipped with power windows and the buttons for the same have been fitted to the respective doors instead of the central console. Additionally, Scorpio Getaway comes with power steering and the air conditioner maintains the temperature of the cabin. Power-door locks have been fitted to all the doors. The seats have been made using fine fabric which reflects masculinity of men and there is ample space for 5 people to sit inside the car comfortably. The whole fabric of interiors has been done in contrast with the exterior body colour of the Getaway. All these features make Scorpio Getaway score extra points in terms of its interiors.
Engine and Gearbox
Both the 2WD and 4WD versions of Mahindra Scorpio Getaway bear a powerful 2.6 Litre Turbocharged CRDe engine carrying 4 cylinders and 8 valves. This engine is quite promising when it comes to giving quality performance and the same has been the motto of Mahindra ever since it stepped its foot in the automobile market. The engine has a displacement capacity of 2609cc with direct fuel injection system which gives the car an extra boost. This engine is tuned up with a 5-Speed manual transmission system and has options for two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive. This engine is capable of giving out a maximum power of 115 bhp at 3800 rpm along with a peak torque of 277.5 Nm at 1700-2200 rpm. The fuel tank has a total capacity of 80 litres. Thus, as an off-roader, Mahindra Scorpio Getaway fairs well and has got a powerful engine to support its performance. The clutch to the car is soft which makes it easier to change the gears and the pedals specially have been made in order to avoid them from jamming at any point of time.
Suspension and Brakes
For an off-roader, the suspension has to be strong enough to hold the car in even the roughest terrains. Thus, Mahindra made sure that there were no compromises in case of car handling and accordingly, placed Double-Wishbone with Torsion bar as the front suspension. For the rear suspension, the company used Semi-Elliptical Leaf Spring along with shock absorbers as hydraulics. Disc brakes have been used as front brakes as more force has to be put on the front tires in case of the driver wishes to stop in a very short course of time. In case of accidents, disc brakes are much more effective than any other form of brakes. For the rear part, Mahindra has used Drum which give enough resistance to the tire in case of the driver wishes to stop abruptly. Unfortunately, Mahindra Scorpio Getaway does not come with Anti-lock Braking System.
Safety Features
There are a wide range of safety features which have been put into Mahindra Scorpio Getaway in order to ensure that there is no hazard to the passengers or the car. For a getaway car, the safety features must always be in place owing to the fact that these cars can perform off-road as well. The outer body of Mahindra Scorpio Getaway has been made using hard metal which decreases the impact of a collision course. The car comes with remote keyless entry and child safety door locks. Additionally, seat belts have been provided for both the front as well as rear seats. The steering wheel is collapsible as per the convenience of the driver. There are certain crumple zones which have been put in the car which in turn ensure that the impact of bumps is minimized to the maximum extent when the car is treading over a path that is rough. Unfortunately, Scorpio Getaway lacks Anti-theft alarm but the rest of the safety features compensate for the loss.
Mileage
Mahindra Scorpio Getaway gives a mileage of 9.1 Km/L on city roads which goes up to 11.4 Km/L for highways. Thus, the overall mileage stands at 10.25 Km/L. The car basically runs on diesel.
Shades
Mahindra Scorpio Getaway comes in three shades namely Fiery Black, Mist Silver and Rocky Beige out of which Fiery Black is the one that most buyers prefer.
Variants
There are basically two variants of Scorpio Getaway available in the market one of which is for two-wheel drive whereas the other one is for four-wheel drive.
