General information and overview

The Mahindra Reva e2o is a compact, four-seater electric hatchback designed specifically for Indian city driving. It features a rear-wheel-drive setup powered by a 31kW (41bhp) electric motor paired with a 10.08 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering a realistic range of about 80-95 km per charge. The car’s design emphasizes urban practicality, with easy maneuverability, hill hold assist, regenerative braking, and an automatic transmission for smooth driving in traffic. It is equipped with basic comfort and safety features but is limited by its somewhat stiff ride and modest build quality. The batteries charge fully in about six to eight hours from a standard socket, with rapid charging options available. Although it lacks the power and long-range capability of larger EVs, it provides a silent, emission-free alternative to petrol cars for short trips. The compact size and low running costs appeal to first-time EV owners and city dwellers who want to minimize environmental impact and fuel expenses.

The Mahindra Reva e2o is a four-seater compact electric hatchback designed specifically for Indian urban environments. It features an electric motor delivering approximately 31 kW (41 bhp) with a max torque of around 67 Nm, powering the rear wheels. The car’s lithium-ion battery pack offers an ARAI-certified range close to 110 km, with charging times around 6 hours from a conventional 15-amp socket and faster charging options available for quicker top-ups. The e2o prioritizes ease of use with automatic transmission and comes equipped with basic amenities such as air conditioning, power steering, and smartphone app connectivity for remote vehicle monitoring. Its lightweight yet sturdy construction with plastic body panels ensures efficiency and moderate safety. The compact dimensions and tight turning radius make it ideal for congested city roads. While not built for high speeds or extended journeys, the e2o is a thoughtfully engineered urban electric vehicle that balances cost, environmental factors, and practicality for the growing Indian EV market.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Mahindra Reva e2o stands out as a practical, eco-friendly city car tailored for Indian urban commuting. Its silent, smooth electric drivetrain offers a refreshing experience, especially in congested traffic, where its modest 41bhp powertrain performs adequately, although it feels slightly underpowered beyond city speeds. The handling benefits from a low battery placement, contributing to a stable drive, but the build quality leaves room for improvement, and the cabin space is somewhat tight, especially at the rear. Its limited real-world range of around 80-95 km restricts it mostly to short urban trips, requiring careful planning for longer drives. The car incorporates useful features like regenerative braking and a hill hold assist, aiding city driving comfort. Charging infrastructure and the grid reliability in India remain challenges, impacting convenience. Despite these drawbacks, the e2o’s affordable electric mobility and low running costs make it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers aiming to reduce emissions and fuel expenses within city limits. It is not a performance vehicle, but for eco-friendly urban transportation, it fits the bill well.
December 9, 2025
The Mahindra Electric Reva e2o is a compact city electric car well-suited for urban commuters who prioritize eco-friendly driving and easy maneuverability over speed and long-distance capability. It offers smooth, silent operation and decent handling for its class, benefiting from a low battery placement that enhances stability. However, its limited top speed of around 50-60 km/h and real-world range near 80-110 km restrict it primarily to city use. Charging infrastructure and power grid reliability in many parts of India can pose practical challenges. The build quality and comfort are basic but acceptable given the price and the focus on efficiency rather than luxury. Overall, it serves as an affordable, practical electric alternative in an emerging Indian EV market but calls for mindful planning around range and charging.

The Mahindra e2o NXT was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018, featuring an updated design, a bigger touchscreen infotainment unit, and improved specs. The new model boasts a range of 140km on a single charge and faster charging options. However, the long charging time remains a drawback. I believe the updates make it a more compelling choice.

Mahindra has halted the sales of the 2-door e2o, with the four-door e2oPlus now serving as the companys entry-level electric car. This move is part of Mahindras strategy to focus on more practical and family-friendly electric vehicles. I think this is a smart move, as the four-door version offers more space and utility.

Mahindra Electric has christened its new car as the ‘e2oPlus’, which is expected to be launched soon. The car will be available on the road at around Rs 6.5 lakh after subsidies, making it an attractive option for those looking for an affordable electric vehicle. I believe the pricing will be a key factor in its success.

The Mahindra e2o has been launched in the UK with prices starting at 12,995 Pounds (approximately Rs. 12.25 lakh) for the base trim. The UK version comes with better specs, including a higher top speed and longer range, compared to its Indian counterpart. I think this international launch is a significant step for Mahindra.

Mahindra Reva is gearing up to launch the e2o in London, taking advantage of the UKs supportive policies and incentives for electric vehicle manufacturers. This launch is part of Mahindras global expansion strategy for its electric vehicle lineup. Its an exciting time for Mahindras international ambitions.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The Mahindra Reva e2o is priced competitively for an electric vehicle in India, with ex-showroom pricing starting around Rs. 7.5 lakh. On-road prices vary depending on state taxes and registration but typically add about 10-15% to the ex-showroom cost, placing the total on-road price near Rs. 8.5 to 9 lakh in major metros. Considering the limited electric vehicle market in India, the e2o is positioned as an affordable entry-level EV, targeting urban buyers seeking economical daily commuters free from fuel price fluctuations. While it is pricier than similar-sized petrol hatchbacks, the trade-off is in lower operating costs and maintenance. However, compared to newly launched electric competitors and government subsidies available in some states, the price might feel slightly high. The price also reflects cost-intensive battery technology, though this may be offset by incentives and growing charging infrastructure. For those prioritizing green mobility over outright speed or range, the price is justified but requires buyers to embrace the compromises that come with early EV adoption in India.
December 9, 2025
The Mahindra Reva e2o typically retails starting at around Rs. 7.5 lakh ex-showroom in India, varying slightly depending on the city due to regional taxes and incentives. On-road prices rise due to registration, insurance, and handling charges, generally adding Rs. 1 lakh or more, putting the on-road cost close to approximately Rs. 8.5 - 9 lakh. Compared to conventional small petrol cars, the e2o’s price is higher but justifiable given the zero fuel cost and lower maintenance typical of EVs. Government subsidies and incentives for electric vehicles may also bring down the effective ownership costs. From a buyer’s perspective, while the upfront premium is notable, the long-term savings in fuel and less frequent servicing, combined with increasing urban restrictions on ICE vehicles, make it an attractive proposition for city dwellers.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Reva e2o delivers an ARAI-certified range of approximately 110 km, but real-world city usage usually yields around 80-95 km on a full charge. This range is sufficient for typical daily urban commutes, helping reduce fuel and maintenance costs drastically compared to petrol cars. Charging costs are minimal, making it highly economical for budget-conscious users concerned about running costs. However, limited range means planning is essential, especially given variable charging infrastructure across Indian cities.
December 9, 2025
The Mahindra Reva e2o offers a practical real-world range of 80 to 110 km on a full charge depending on driving conditions. This is sufficient for daily urban commuting but requires planning for longer trips. The running cost per km is significantly lower than petrol or diesel cars because electricity is cheaper than fuel, and EVs have fewer moving parts reducing maintenance costs. For anyone focused on reducing ongoing expenses and environmental impact within city limits, the e2o’s mileage offers a compelling balance.

Overview

Mahindra has launched their much hyped electric car, Reva e2o in Delhi. It’s the up-graded version of the original Reva and claims to be more stylish and powerful than the previous generation. Let’s check out this car in detail.

Mahindra Reva e2o Exterior

The two door car grabbed a lot of eyeballs when it was initially showcased at Auto Expo 2012 in Delhi. The new styling has completely changed the visual presence of this tiny electric machine. The new face of e2o features a wide black front grille which separates the bonnet from its bumper and also works as an air-dam. The extended clear lens headlights act as the new eyes of this car and give it a smoky look at the front. Sharp lines on its front bumper and bonnet look aerodynamic while the flared wheel arches add muscularity to this car. The new design of its alloy wheels and full size outside mirrors make a big difference to the look of new e2o. The swept back roof and angular side glass look sporty when seen from sideways. The sharp shoulder line also complements the short stance of this car. The tall rear section adds visual bulk to e2o and looks attractive with high positioned tail lights. Reva e2o has an extremely broad bumper which doesn’t look that attractive and features reflective lights on it. The grey finishing just below the rear glass features its name and complements the color scheme of this car.

Mahindra Reva e2o Interior and Passenger Space

Step into the new e2o and you can easily notice the drastic changes made to this car inside. The plastic and fabric quality has taken a big leap forward and the front and rear seats have become more spacious and comfortable than before. The car offers optimum amount of knee room and head room at the front. Obviously, being a two door hatch, it requires a little more effort from your side to reach the rear seats. We wish if it had the options to roll down the rear windows as well.

Comfort and Convenience

Reva e2o comes with an AC, front power windows, internally adjustable outside mirrors and central locking which enhances you comfort inside. The list doesn’t end here; it also comes with premium features like engine start/stop button and digital instrument console. It’s a feature rich car which promises you satisfactory level of comfort inside.

Dashboard and Storage

Reva e2o sports a brand new dashboard made of rich quality of plastic material which adds premium touch to this car. The positioning of things on this dashboard looks quite impressive as it features four circular AC vents surrounded by silver finish and an integrated touch screen interface in its central console. The quality of plastic buttons placed on this central console feels up-market. The circular speedometer with blue back lit looks cool with chrome ring around it and offers clear visibility. This dashboard also houses a roomy glove box which can carry your essentials. Other than this, there is not much storage space in this car and its small boot capacity is also disappointing.

Music System of Mahindra Reva e2o

The central console of Reva comes with an integrated CD/DVD player. A cool phone app connects your Reva with your phone which can start your AC and helps you to lock/unlock it. The car features Google maps which helps you to plan your trips and informs you to turn back before you run out of battery.

Engine and Gearbox

The car runs on Lithium ion batteries which are placed under its fronts seats. This 3phase induction motor sits at the back and produces a peak power of 19 KW (25.5 bhp) at 3750 rpm. The maximum torque output of 52 Nm arrives at 3400 rpm.

Acceleration and Performance

Acceleration and Performance, these two words prove to be a big task to achieve for e2o. Don’t expect any dramatic results from this car. It takes time to take off and as soon as it does, unfortunately, the power tapers off. It can reach the top speed of 81km/hr and it’s quite hard to achieve this speed with full load. The good news is that this motor makes no noise and pulls up power quite easily in city traffic. Put the gear selector on B (power boost) and you will notice certain improvement in the throttle reaction. The motor makes slight noise at high speeds but that’s not disturbing.

Mahindra Reva e2o Mileage and Safety Features

Running expenses are quite low with e2o. It takes around 5 hours to charge this car completely and after completion, it can run around 80-90 kilometres in real life conditions. With a quick charge of 15 minutes, the car can cover 25 kilometres. The car has passed all safety tests as it’s been crash tested in Spain and features 10 on board computers.

Suspension and Braking System

The car comes with an improved suspension and braking system. The anti-roll bar at front and coil springs at the back makes sure that you enjoy comfortable rides in this car. Reva e2o has discs at its front and drum brakes at the back.

Ride and Handling

It’s a tiny vehicle which proves to be a perfect option for city usage which can fit anywhere and can be parked easily. An additional power steering would have further enhanced the handling of this car in city traffic. The soft suspension system digests potholes easily and gives you bump free rides. The car is a bit scary around corners though due to its small wheels and short wheelbase of 1958 mm.

Shades, Variants and Warranty

The two variants of e2o are available in six different colors. E2o comes with a warranty of three years/60000kilometers.

Verdict

No, you can’t; you just can’t buy a car which is as small as e2o at a price of INR 5.96 (on-road, Delhi) just because it’s eco-friendly and saves your running expenses. Yes, it’s futuristic but it’s not practical to buy this car. When you can buy much powerful, spacious and stylish premium hatches and entry level sedans at this price then it makes no sense to buy this two door hatch which lacks power and comes with many limitations. For us, it’s certainly not a value for money car.

We hear so many reports about testing and spy photographs in the Internet. But when E2O is actually going to be sold by Mahindra? Has the Company got Indian government subsidy so as to boost environmental protection in our country and in order to reduce the overall cost price to people like us? It is stated in Internet reports that Lithium ion batteries are going to be leased to buyers rather than outright sale, to reduce the actual cost price at the time of buying. But will it not add to maintenance cost of the vehicle as lease rental has to be paid to the Lessor every month or every year? Please comment
