Land Rover Range Rover
General information and overview
The Range Rover in India is a full‑size flagship SUV available in multiple powertrains (including 3.0‑litre six‑cylinder petrol/diesel mild‑hybrids and a 4.4‑litre twin‑turbo V8 in higher‑spec models) and in long‑wheelbase layouts that prioritise rear‑occupant comfort; key highlights include multi‑link air suspension with adaptive damping, advanced terrain response/4WD systems, ultra‑luxurious cabins with semi‑aniline leather, a large Pivi Pro infotainment cluster and extensive safety/driver assist suites, plus generous luggage and a large 90‑litre tank on some variants — it’s heavy (kerb weight well above 2.5 tonnes), engineered for isolation and composure rather than frugal running, and offers strong on‑road performance and serious off‑road ability when required, making it a choice for buyers looking for maximum presence, comfort and capability in India rather than those prioritising low cost of ownership.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the Range Rover (Autobiography LWB with the 4.4‑litre twin‑turbo V8 / 3.0‑litre mild‑hybrid options depending on the specific variant) to be a consummate flagship that prioritises serene comfort, authoritative presence and genuine all‑terrain capability while delivering class‑leading interior luxury and technology; the ride quality, rear‑seat space (especially in the long‑wheelbase) and refinement make it ideal for buyers who value chauffeur‑grade comfort and a prestigious image, though the high purchase price, heavy kerb weight and modest real‑world fuel economy mean it’s best suited to buyers who prioritise luxury and capability over low running costs.
Recent news and announcements
The 2025 Land Rover Range Rover sees no major changes but continues to offer a powerful lineup, including the new P550e plug-in hybrid with 542 horsepower, available only on the short wheelbase Autobiography trim. The top-spec SV model now comes with a 606-hp V-8 engine. This maintains the Range Rovers position as a luxury SUV with impressive performance and off-road capabilities. I believe the P550e will be a hit among those seeking both power and efficiency.
The Range Rover now offers a new customization service called SV Bespoke, which allows buyers to personalize their vehicles extensively. This service includes unique interior and exterior options, making each Range Rover truly unique. This level of personalization is a significant selling point for luxury buyers. I believe this service will set the Range Rover apart from other luxury SUVs.
Land Rover has introduced the ultra-exclusive Range Rover SV Carmel Edition, which was revealed at the 2023 Monterey Car Week in California. This limited edition model highlights the SV Bespoke program, offering extensive personalization options for Range Rover buyers. The Carmel Edition features unique design elements and luxurious interior appointments. I think this edition will appeal to those looking for a truly bespoke luxury SUV experience.
Land Rover has introduced the Tailgate Event Suite for the Range Rover, featuring a leather-free Ultrafabrics cushion, tailgate speakers, and lighting. This enhancement adds to the vehicles luxury and versatility, making it ideal for outdoor events. This feature is a nice touch for those who enjoy outdoor activities. I think it will be a favorite among Range Rover owners who like to entertain.
The Range Rover Electric has been tested in extreme Arctic conditions, demonstrating its capability to perform in temperatures as low as -40°F. This testing ensures the vehicles battery and Electric Drive Unit are robust and reliable. This is a reassuring test for potential buyers of the electric model. I believe this testing will build confidence in the Range Rover Electrics durability.
Pricing details and changes
Ex‑showroom prices for the Range Rover in India sit in the ultra‑premium bracket — variants begin around the Rs. 2.4 crore (ex‑showroom) mark and go up substantially for Autobiography, LWB and SV models with V8 engines and bespoke options; on‑road prices (which include state taxes, registration, insurance and other charges) typically add several lakhs to the ex‑showroom figure and can push the on‑road cost well past Rs. 2.6–3.0 crore depending on state and option choices, with fully specced SV or long‑wheelbase cars costing significantly more. From my perspective, the headline price is justified by the segment‑leading comfort, advanced air suspension, high‑grade materials and the brand cachet, but buyers should budget conservatively for premiums on options, high tax slabs in some states and elevated insurance costs.
Fuel efficiency information
The official ARAI figure for the larger petrol V8 / big engines is in the sub‑10 kmpl range (examples show around 8.7 kmpl for certain petrol configurations) and even the smaller 3.0‑litre engines return around 10–13 kmpl on paper, so in real‑world Indian mixed driving expect figures significantly lower than ARAI — plan for high fuel spend and factor in premium fuel, though hybridised variants improve urban efficiency modestly.
