General information and overview

The 2008 Hyundai Verna, a discontinued compact sedan tailored for India, featured a rugged body with high ground clearance and tough suspension to tackle our diverse roads, powered by a 1493cc CRDi diesel engine (manual transmission) producing strong torque for quick acceleration and stable high-speed cruising up to 176 kmph, paired with seating for five and essentials like power steering, AC, and optional ABS in SX variants. It boasted 18.1 kmpl mileage, a 45-litre tank, and fantastic braking, making it a practical daily driver or highway hauler with low maintenance if serviced at Hyundai networks. Popular for value, it offered better performance and space than contemporaries, though lacking modern safety; today, used ones are bargains for reliable motoring, but I check for common issues like clutch wear or rust in humid areas before recommending.
December 20, 2025
I view the 2008 Verna as a roomy five‑seater sedan with forgiving ride quality, well-damped suspension and an engine lineup that included 1.5‑litre petrols and a popular 1.5 CRDi diesel offering strong torque for overtakes; equipment was competitive for its time (power windows, AC, decent interiors) though modern safety and convenience features are limited and some variants lack ABS/airbag coverage by today’s standards. Key buying points I focus on are service history, timing belt/chain condition, clutch and gearbox feel, suspension and steering play, signs of water ingress or rust, and evidence of past accidents—getting a pre‑purchase inspection and test drive that stresses highway acceleration and low‑speed drivability will tell you whether the specific example is worth the price being asked.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the 2008 Hyundai Verna a solid choice for buyers seeking a reliable used sedan in India today, especially with its proven diesel CRDi engine delivering strong acceleration and stability at high speeds up to 170 kmph even without ABS, making it ideal for long highway drives common in our country. Its rugged design, high ground clearance, and durable suspension handle Indian roads well, from potholes to speed breakers, while seating five comfortably with basic yet practical features like power steering and AC. Performance shines with the 1493cc diesel offering 18.1 kmpl mileage, balancing power and efficiency better than many rivals of its era, and braking feels confident. Though discontinued due to outdated safety norms, well-maintained used examples remain value-packed at low prices, with low running costs if serviced regularly—perfect for budget-conscious families or first-time buyers prioritizing dependability over modern frills, though I recommend checking for rust and engine health before purchase.
December 20, 2025
I find the 2008 Hyundai Verna (commonly the Fluidic-era diesel or petrol trims) to be a pragmatic choice for buyers seeking a comfortable, well-built compact sedan with strong mid‑range performance and good highway composure; the diesel variants offer brisk acceleration and durable drivetrains while the petrols are smooth and easy to maintain, but the car shows its age in safety and feature levels compared with modern rivals and may need careful inspection for rust, suspension wear and engine health when buying used. (Sources: original model era reviews and owner reports that praise performance and comfort while noting age-related issues).

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Hyundai has introduced minor updates to the Verna, including a new boot lid spoiler to enhance its sporty profile and aerodynamics, although no official figures on the aerodynamic improvements have been released. Additionally, a new Amazon Grey color scheme has been added to the options. Prices have been increased by Rs 4,000 across all variants except the base EX trim.

Hyundai has emphasized the Vernas sporty appeal with the addition of a rear spoiler, which is now standard across all variants except the base EX trim. This cosmetic update gives the sedan a more aggressive look. I think this addition will appeal to buyers looking for a sportier design.
November 5, 2024
The Hyundai Verna, which received a generation upgrade in March 2023, now boasts a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating and features like a dual integrated screen setup, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and 64-color ambient lighting. It also includes safety features such as six airbags and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) in the top-spec trim. I think these updates make the Verna a strong contender in the mid-size sedan segment.
November 4, 2024
The Vernas interior is highlighted by a dual integrated screen setup, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. This setup enhances the driving experience with modern technology and convenience features.
March 16, 2023
Hyundai Vernas latest generation features significant design changes, including LED projector headlights and LED positioning lamps with DRLs. The interior is equipped with a single-pane sunroof, ventilated and heated front seats, and an air purifier. These features make the Verna one of the most feature-rich sedans in its class.

Price

Pricing details and changes

I see typical used-ex-showroom price ranges for the 2006–2009 Verna generation in India between roughly ₹3.5–8.5 lakh depending on year, variant (1.5 CRDi diesel higher than petrol), condition, kilometres done and city; dealers and online listings from aggregators show last recorded listings around ₹6.5–8.5 lakh for well-kept examples but many everyday-condition cars trade lower—expect lower offers in smaller towns and higher prices in metros with documented service history and lower kms. On‑road costs for a used buy add state-dependent registration transfer, RTO fees, insurance renewal and potential immediate maintenance (timing belt/service, tyres, brakes), so budget an extra ₹30,000–₹1,00,000 depending on what needs attention; I recommend factoring these into your buy decision rather than relying solely on the listing price.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I rate the 2008 Verna's 18.1 kmpl diesel ARAI figure excellent for its time, delivering real-world 13-17 kmpl on highways and 12-14 in city traffic, keeping running costs low at Rs 4-5 per km with diesel at current prices—ideal for high-mileage users in India concerned about fuel bills over luxury features.
December 20, 2025
In real-world Indian conditions the 1.5 CRDi diesel Verna commonly returns around 14–18 kmpl mixed city/highway, often touching low‑to‑mid teens in heavy city use, while petrol variants average roughly 10–13 kmpl; maintenance, tyre choice and driving style significantly affect these figures, so if running costs are a priority I would prioritise a well‑serviced diesel with verified fuel records and a compression/engine check before purchase.
