Expert Review by Maxabout

Introduction

India’s one of the best-selling sedans Hyundai Verna was first launched in the country in 2006 and since then the car has gone through plenty of upgrades to stay updated with its technology and design. Among all other updates, the introduction of the facelift model in 2020 was the most recent one and it brought major design as well as feature additions to the car. It also needs to be mentioned here that in 2018, the Verna was awarded as the best Indian car of the year. Despite stiff competition in the sedan segment in the country, the Hyundai Verna kept on ruling the Indian hearts with its styling and comfort. Let’s discuss in detail the features and specs of the car.

Hyundai Verna Design and Style

Thanks to the new design language employed mostly on the front and rear end, the current edition of the Verna seems bigger and broader. The Verna boasts a new imposing and aggressive look that includes a broad and wide grille with a studded mesh style completed in dark chrome. The front bumper is also completely redesigned, with a broad lip spoiler coated in dark chrome that spans across the lower front end. The headlights include a completely new design feature, with a boomerang-style DRL and a full LED white glow headlight beam.

In addition, the tiny spherical fog lights have a yellow projector glow, and the front bumper has a fake air curtain on the extreme corners to add a sporty and distinctive design touch. The 16" diamond-cut alloy wheels are the most eye-catching design feature of the side profile, and the roofline seems to be taken from the coupe. Other notable add-ons to the side profile are chrome-lined door handles as well as the gleaming chrome beltline that goes over the window area all the way to the C-pillar.

The rear profile gets a makeover, with new restyled LED taillights and a new, sharper-looking rear bumper. The rear bumper, like the front one, features a dark chrome lip spoiler on the bottom part that runs across it. In the extreme corners, the bumper additionally has slim, wide-shaped stop reflectors. In terms of body dimensions, the sedan is 4440mm in length, 1729mm in overall width, and 1475mm in overall height, and it has a wheelbase of 2600mm.

Hyundai Verna Engine and Gearbox

Hyundai has offered the sedan, Verna, with three powertrain options: 1.5 l MPi petrol, 1.5 l U2 CRDi diesel and 1.0 l Kappa turbo GDi petrol. The 1497cc, DOHC with VIS, 1.5-litre Mpi petrol engine is capable of churning out 115 HP and 144 Nm when combined with a 6-speed manual or IVT transmission. The 1493cc, DOHC with VGT, 1493cc, 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine generates 115 HP and 250 Nm when paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. And the last one is a 998cc, DOHC with TIS, 1.0-litre Kappa turbo GDi petrol engine that produces 120 HP and 172 Nm when coupled to a 7-speed DCT.

Hyundai Verna Interior, Instrument Cluster & Boot Space

Stepping inside, the stylish sedan sports a dual-tone cabin of black and beige shades. The new wide-styled AC vents appear sophisticated, with a hint of chrome running through them. The two-way adjustable steering adds to the comfortable driving experience. The rear view mirror has an auto-dimming function as well as BluLink and SOS activation buttons.

The upholstery on the top-end variant comes in a dual-tone shade, and the front seats are ventilated. The driver's seat has manual height adjustment, and the front seats provide superb support and are really comfy. The rear seats comprise dual adjustable headrests as well as a movable centre armrest. Legroom is enough for two people, albeit not the finest in class.

The sedan comes equipped with a fully-digital instrument console, and it also has a 4.2-inch driver information display (MID) that shows the driver a plethora of data. The Verna also receives a smart boot opening function, which opens the boot lid automatically if your hands are engaged and you have the key remote with you. The manufacturer has loaded the car with an ample boot space of 480 litres.

Hyundai Verna Brakes, Suspension & Tyres

Braking duties in the Hyundai Verna are assigned to disc brakes at the front while the rear end braking is different depending on the variant. In the E, S+, SX and SX(O) variants, rear braking is done by drum brakes whereas, in the SX(O) Turbo variant, rear braking is handled by a disc brake. As for suspension chores, these are done by McPherson strut with coil spring at the front and Coupled torsion beam axle at the rear.

The Verna rides on 15-inch steel or 16-inch alloy wheels which vary according to variants. The 15-inch steel wheels are shod in 185/65 size tubeless tyres while the 16-inch alloy wheels are clothed in 195/55 size tubeless tyres. There is a spare 185/65 R15 steel wheel offered with all the trims.

It is important to note that on-road prices in our country vary widely from state to state.

Verdict - Should You Buy Hyundai Verna or not?

Hyundai's C-segment sedan, the Verna, has always been a solid performer. The brand continues to establish the strengths of the car, which are comfort, features, simplicity of driving and aesthetic appeal. However, the car still lacks features like rain-sensing wipers and auto-fold ORVMs, which are really common in today’s vehicles. But, the car proves its worth with its performance, and if you are looking for a sedan with simple yet classy looks and a great comfort level, you can surely go for it.
