Hyundai has been testing the facelifted version of the i20 in India, which is expected to feature minor cosmetic updates but no changes to the powertrain. This means the diesel engine will not be reinstated. I think the cosmetic updates will keep the i20 fresh in the market, even though the diesel option is missed.

The Hyundai i20 now comes with updated BS6 Phase 2 compliant engines, but the diesel variants have been discontinued. The car is now available with a 1.2-litre NA petrol and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. I think this update is a significant step towards meeting new emission norms, but it may disappoint those who preferred the diesel version.

Hyundai has discontinued the 1.5-litre diesel engine for the i20 in India due to the upcoming Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms effective from April 1, 2023. This move makes the i20 a petrol-only offering. I believe this shift will impact buyers looking for diesel options, but it aligns with the industrys move towards stricter emission standards.

As a result of the stricter RDE regulations that will come into effect on April 1, 2023, an array of cars and variants of cars will no longer be available to the public. Unfortunately, the Hyundai i20 diesel falls under this category, and will be discontinued come 2023. With the huge costs involved in upgrading to the new emissions standards, it's not economically feasible for the company to continue production of the model. This news is sure to be a disappointment to Hyundai i20 diesel fans, but the company has to abide by the new standards set by the government.
