The Honda City 5th generation continues to demonstrate why it remains a compelling choice in India's midsize sedan segment. I've observed that Honda has strategically planned a second facelift arriving in the latter half of 2026, which will introduce subtle styling updates while maintaining the vehicle's proven mechanical foundation. The current iteration, which received its first facelift in 2023, showcases the refined 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine producing 121 horsepower and 145 Newton-metres of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission. The fuel efficiency remains impressive, delivering up to 18.4 km/l with the CVT variant. What strikes me most is the balanced approach Honda has taken with the City's suspension tuning, which handles both city commuting and highway drives with composed confidence. The inclusion of Honda Sensing ADAS technology across variants adds a significant safety layer, complemented by six airbags and electronic stability control. The interior retains its practical 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, digital instrument cluster, and sunroof. Looking ahead, the upcoming facelift is expected to feature cosmetic enhancements including revised front grille, updated LED lighting elements, and possibly an optional 360-degree camera system. Mechanically, the powertrains will remain unchanged, ensuring continuity until the sixth-generation model arrives around 2028.

The Honda City 5th generation continues to hold its ground as one of India's most compelling mid-size sedans, and after living with it, I find myself consistently impressed by what Honda has managed to deliver at this price point. The 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with the 6-speed manual transmission is an absolute joy, offering smooth power delivery and impressive efficiency that hovers around 17.8 to 18.4 kmpl depending on driving conditions. The CVT automatic variant proves equally competent, particularly in urban traffic where the eco mode shines. What truly sets this car apart is its balance of comfort and practicality. The rear seat legroom is genuinely spacious, the boot accommodates family luggage effortlessly, and the overall build quality feels premium for the segment. The steering is beautifully tuned for Indian roads, remaining light during city driving yet composed at highway speeds. However, some omissions at higher price points do stand out—ventilated seats, a fully functional TPMS, and a 360-degree camera would have elevated the experience further. The weak low-end torque becomes apparent when carrying passengers or tackling inclines, and road noise penetration could be better insulated. Despite these minor shortcomings, the City remains a thoroughly competent daily driver that rewards long-distance cruising while maintaining Honda's legendary reliability standards that Indian buyers deeply value.

I have recently spent considerable time with the Honda City 5th generation, and I must say it continues to impress me as one of India's most well-rounded mid-size sedans. The 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, producing 121 horsepower and 145 Newton-meters of torque, delivers a remarkably smooth driving experience whether you're navigating city traffic or cruising on highways. The CVT automatic gearbox is exceptionally refined, shifting almost invisibly while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency of around 13-14 kmpl in mixed conditions, though you can expect better figures during highway runs. What genuinely stands out is the suspension tuning, which absorbs India's varied road conditions with impressive composure. The cabin feels spacious and practical, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on higher variants, though I do wish ventilated seats came as standard. The safety package is commendable with six airbags and segment-first ADAS features including adaptive cruise control and lane assistance. Comfort levels are genuinely impressive, with supportive seats and excellent ergonomics that make long journeys effortless. At its current price point starting from approximately Rs 11.95 lakh, the City 5th generation remains an exceptional value proposition for families seeking a dependable, comfortable sedan that handles both city driving and highway adventures admirably.

The Honda City 5th generation continues to hold its ground as one of India's most compelling sedans in 2026. Having spent considerable time with this model, I find it delivers an exceptionally refined driving experience that justifies its enduring popularity. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated i-VTEC petrol engine remains a standout, offering smooth linear performance with that characteristic high-revving capability that makes it genuinely enjoyable to drive. The 6-speed manual transmission pairs beautifully with this powerplant, while the CVT automatic option provides excellent versatility for daily commuting. What particularly impresses me is the rear seat comfort, which remains a benchmark in its segment, making long family drives genuinely pleasant. The steering feels superbly tuned for Indian road conditions, remaining responsive without being twitchy. Safety equipment is comprehensive with six airbags and advanced ADAS features like adaptive cruise control. The cabin quality has matured well, though some miss ventilated seats from the base variants. Real-world mileage typically ranges from 17 to 21 kilometers per litre depending on driving conditions. The upcoming second facelift promises subtle design refinements while maintaining the mechanical excellence that has made the City a preferred choice across Indian families for nearly three decades.

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Honda City 5th Gen

Why the 5 th Gen Honda City is worth the look

Ok, let me come clean now On the Honda City 5th Gen. it is like that one friend who is so together with his investments. Reliable, fashionable, and sufficiently geeky in the engine room to maintain the interest level. I will illustrate why this one is excellent specifically if you are in pursuit of a car that is comfortable in the congestion of a city’s roadway as it would be on a highway all alone.

Power and Performance: It is always better to go slow and steady in the race, not a hare.

The Honda City 5th Gen is not trying to be a speed demon rather a comfortable, reliable and efficient car. This car is not about horsepower and neck snapping acceleration that makes the veins in the back of your neck pop out. That on the contrary is more like a comfortable ocean trip a comfortable ship providing a necessary level of comfortable safety. The 1.5L engine of Honda comes as both petrol and diesel variants and gives out a reasonable amount of power together with reasonable mileage. This is not the car that would be ideal for a drag race but if you are looking for something that will give you a comfortable ride and will last the distance it does the job.

Now let’s discuss the issue of mileage for a moment. Honda has once again worked it out well giving this engine pretty steady fuel efficiency. And considering what gas prices are these days they cannot afford to pass up that kind of a window. If like me you always hate those long needed stop overs at stations, then the thought that you have a car that will not make your pockets feel lighter just by fuelling it is something to celebrate. In short, it is efficient, it is reliable and it will not leave you flocking to the pump every other day.

Interior: Where Comfort meets a touch of CLASS

Climb into the driver’s seat and you will see that Honda has gone a step up in interior quality. Waking up with no feeling of confined spaces That perfect living room comfort feel right inside the cabin but with a window view that is way better. The seats are quite firm and provide ample legroom; I should know, as I am rather tall- it can often be difficult to find a car with good leg room at this price range & indent.

And that infotainment system? Honda finally got it right. The possible options are good, the touchscreen is sensitive and authors will be glad to see both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Basically it’s a must-have to me since I need my music, maps and messages easily accessible in just a tap. And let me tell you, it finally is understandable to navigate through, which surely has improved with no more swiping into oblivion to get to exactly what I want. One thing is for sure Honda has been paying attention to what the drivers need.

Safety: As everybody likes to stay safe and secure, then is it wrong for a father to have a woman he can wine and dine and have all the fun do nothing with?

In as much as appearance is concerned, Honda did not lack as they went all out concerning the safety features. As for safety features as always you get ABS with EBD, all the way up to six airbags it seems this car has you covered. Just the structure itself helps to dampen shocks within the bearings so that adds the kind of comfort to your life, you know you have good locks on your doors at home.

Now, here’s a feature I think does not get enough credit: Honda’s lane watch camera. Flick is one of those features that appear and seem minor, but they go a long way when you are manoeuvring through narrow lanes or traffic. You can never go wrong with something that is portable, easy to use and frankly, it is the type of tool that once integrated, you will wonder how you ever worked with it.

Design: Sleek but Not Overdone

Talking of design, The Honda City 05 Gen does not need to over extend or under achieve in the slightest to be remarkable. It is a very modern design which draws the eye but is not in your face. It really is unsettling, refine, perfectly designed but not ostentatious like a good suit needs to be. Today, the grille is well done, the lines are nice and clean and the appearance just looks comfortable. It is not here to impress you with its tricks it is just a good looking sleek car that will not look out of place in the distant future.

The Bottom Line

So, here’s my take if you will settle on purchasing for a car which is an excellent balance between reliability, style, practicality and comfort then the Honda City 5th Gen should be strongly on your list of considerations. This is not the car that is  going to make a statement but it is a car that does well for itself and provides what it should. At the same time, it would not require constant attention is held together quite well and while riding you will certainly feel secure and comfortable. If you find yourself slogging through rush hour traffic on the drive to work or taking a scenic drive for a weekend getaway this one’s up for the challenge.
