Honda City 5th Gen Review
Expert Review by Maxabout
Introduction
The 5th gen Honda City, which was launched in India in back July 2020, has been one of the popular sedans by the brand in our market. The Honda City is recognized as a lively, nimble, and comfy C2 segment sedan. With the gen update, it receives a new design, an improved powertrain, a remodelled interior, and the inclusion of several new features. Recently, the 4th gen Honda City got crash-tested by the global safety watchdog GNCAP and received a 4-star safety rating, however, the fifth-gen model is yet to be evaluated. Let’s dive into scrutinising the design, styling and features of the 5th gen model.
Honda City Design and Style
To kick off with the front fascia, in keeping with the brand's contemporary design language, the new City has a broad chrome strip with the Honda logo in the centre immediately above the grille. The slim LED headlamp units, coupled with the LED DRLs, flank each side of the grille. The front bumper features a massive air dam in the centre, with fog lights in rectangular housings on either side.
Moving on to the side profile, the sedan continues the simple design with few aesthetic cues. However, there is a distinct shoulder line running over the length of the sedan, beginning at the headlights and tapering down at the taillights.
The sedan's rear profile has elegant Z-shaped wrap-around LED tail lights, which are the standout feature at the trunk. The taillights are stylish and give the rear a broad impression. Both ends of the rear bumper have reflectors. In terms of body dimensions, the car measures 4549mm in overall length, 1748mm in overall width, 1489mm in overall height with a wheelbase of 2600mm.
Honda City Engine and Gearbox
Honda has offered the new fifth-gen City with two powertrain options. The first one is a 1.5-litre, 1498cc, water-cooled Inline, 4-cylinder, i-VTEC, DOHC with VTC, 16-valve petrol engine that is capable of churning out 121 HP and 145 Nm when coupled to a 6 reverse and 1 forward manual transmission or 7-speed CVT. While the other one is a 1.5-litre, 1498cc, water-cooled Inline, 4-cylinder, i-DTEC, DOHC, 16-valve diesel engine which generates 100 HP and 200 Nm when mated to a 6 reverse and 1 forward manual transmission.
Honda City Interior, Instrument Cluster & Boot Space
The sedan gets a premium yet simplistic design with a dual-tone black and beige treatment. Its dashboard features faux wood trim that splits the dashboard. Leather inlays can also be seen on the dashboard. The AC vents are now vertically layered. To reduce reflections on the glass, the top of the dashboard is covered in black.
When it comes to storage space within the cabin, there is enough of it. Starting with the door pads, they can easily fit a 1L bottle as well as some other necessities. On the driver's side, there's a modest coin holder in the dashboard, whilst the passenger side receives a decent-sized glovebox that lacks the cooling capability. There are two cup holders in the centre console, as well as additional storage space for your items.
In addition, the seats are spacious and comfortable. While the squab is properly bolstered, the front seats' backrests should have featured lumbar adjustments. The backbench, on the other hand, is the greatest in the business. Even the tallest person will have plenty of legroom, shoulder and headroom. The rear-seat passengers have their own AC vents as well as a charging plug.
The instrument cluster sports a 7-inch multi-colour TFT Display as well as an analogue speedometer. This customizable display offers a plethora of data and information to keep the driver up to date on all statistics. The car has offered ample boot space of 506-litres to carry your luggage easily.
Honda City Brakes, Suspension & Tyres
Braking duties on the sedan are handled by ventilated disc at the front and drum brakes at the rear. As far as suspension is concerned, it has been done by McPherson Strut with Coil Spring at the front and Torsion Beam with Coil Spring at the rear. The new 5th gen Honda City rides on 15-inch or 16-inch alloy wheels depending on the variant. The 15-inch wheels are outfitted with 185/60 size tubeless tyres while the 16-inch wheels are clothed with 185/55 size tubeless tyres.
Honda City Key Features
2023 5th gen Honda City comes packed with a host of features including 1st in segment full LED headlamps, z-shaped 3D wraparound LED tail lights, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, electric sunroof, shark fin antenna, auto fold ORVMs, ambient lighting, illuminated boot space, 8 speaker sound system, 20.3cm advanced touchscreen display audio, Apple car play and Android Auto, Weblink smartphone connectivity, engine start-stop, driver seat height adjuster, rear windscreen shade, 1st in segment walk away auto lock, fully automatic climate control with max cool and many more.
As for passenger safety, the car comes equipped with six airbags, agile handling assistance, vehicle stability assistance, tyre pressure monitoring, 4 rear parking sensors, ESS, hill start assist, multi-angle rear camera, ABS with EBD, rear ISOFIX anchorages, immobilizer with anti-theft alarm to mention a few.
Honda City Top Speed, Acceleration & Mileage
2023 Honda City offers a top speed of 170-180 kmph and it accelerates from 0-100 kmph within 10.4 seconds. The 1.5-litre petrol MT offers 11-12 kmpl in the city traffic and 17-18 kmpl on the highways. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre diesel MT offers 16-17 kmpl in the city and 18-20 kmpl on the highways.
Honda City Variants & Colour Options
The new Honda City is offered in three variants called V, VX and ZX. While the offered colour scheme comprises five vibrant colours named Radiant Red Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Modern Steel Metallic, Golden Brown Metallic and Lunar Silver Metallic.
Ex-showroom Price & On-Road Price
At present, the ex-showroom pricing of the new Honda City starts at Rs 11.57 lakh for the V MT petrol variant and goes up to Rs 15.32 lakh for the ZX CVT petrol variant. The ex-showroom price is the vehicle's manufacturing cost plus the dealer/seller profit + GST + transportation costs (from the manufacturing plant to the dealership). The on-road price, on the other hand, is the amount you pay the dealership to have the vehicle roadworthy. It includes the ex-showroom price in your city, as well as RTO (vehicle registration), a one-time road tax, insurance fees, and other optional costs. Please be aware that the on-road price in India varies significantly between states due to different proportions of state registration costs.
Honda City Competitors
2023 5th gen Honda City competes with the likes of Skoda Slavia, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in the Indian car market.
Verdict - Should You Buy Honda City or not?
2023 fifth-generation Honda City promises to be the ultimate blending of the city's two-decade-old tradition with futuristic bells and whistles. If you are a driving enthusiast, the petrol Honda City with a manual gearbox is definitely the best choice in this segment. Aside from that, if you are looking for a sophisticated, feature-loaded, spacious, family-oriented car, the fifth-generation Honda City pretty much checks all the needed boxes. The major downside is the high price tag, but the car manages to justify it with its plethora of features.
