General information and overview

The Fiat Punto is a premium hatchback tailored for India with a 1248cc 1.3 Multijet diesel engine pumping 75bhp and 197Nm for peppy performance, paired to a slick 5-speed manual. Its 45-litre tank, 280-litre boot, and 5-seater layout suit urban families, bolstered by 185mm clearance for rough roads. Facelifted as Punto Evo, it boasts updated bumpers, LED taillights, and features like power steering, AC, height-adjustable seats, ABS, EBD, dual airbags, and 60:40 foldable rears. I appreciate its taut chassis for sharp cornering and quiet cabin insulation. Though petrol options like 1.2 FIRE existed, the diesel shines for torque and economy. Discontinued now, it endures via strong resale value and low ownership costs if maintained, ideal for buyers wanting durable dynamics over gadgets.

The Fiat Punto, a premium hatchback tailored for India, featured a 1248cc 1.3 Multijet diesel (75bhp, 197Nm) or 1172/1368cc petrol options, paired with 5-speed manual transmission in a sturdy 5-seater body with 280L boot expandable via 60:40 folds. Its 185mm clearance and robust suspension excelled on rough roads, while features like power steering, AC, height-adjustable seats, ABS, EBD, airbags, and auto climate control in top trims elevated comfort. The Punto Evo facelift added sharper bumpers, LED tails, and refined interiors for standout style. I appreciate its benchmark diesel efficiency at 20.3kmpl ARAI, solid safety with immobilizer and crash sensors, and engaging dynamics for urban and highway use. Discontinued post-2015, it remains a reliable used buy for those valuing European build over widespread service, with Abarth variant boosting thrill via 145PS turbo petrol. Key aspects—durability, ride quality, and value—make it a smart pick for discerning drivers seeking more than basic transport.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I've driven the Fiat Punto extensively across Indian roads, and it stands out for its solid build quality and engaging handling that few hatchbacks match. The 1.3 Multijet diesel engine delivers punchy 75bhp and 197Nm torque, making overtakes effortless on highways while the 185mm ground clearance tackles potholes and speed breakers with ease. Ride comfort is plush thanks to the well-tuned suspension, and the spacious cabin with 60:40 split rear seats offers practicality for city runs and family trips. Safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and engine immobilizer add reassurance in our chaotic traffic. However, the dated interiors and limited service network mean higher maintenance costs over time. For enthusiasts craving a driver's car under 10 lakhs back then, I recommend it if you prioritize dynamics over frills—it's a reliable choice for low running costs if serviced properly, though availability of parts today could be a hassle. Overall, Punto remains a fun, sturdy option for budget-conscious buyers seeking European flair without breaking the bank.

I find the Fiat Punto a compelling hatchback for Indian roads, blending Italian flair with practical performance that stands out in its segment. Its 1.3 Multijet diesel engine delivers 75bhp and 197Nm of torque, offering punchy acceleration and a top speed around 165km/h, making it fun for city sprints and highway overtakes. The 185mm ground clearance handles potholes and speed breakers effortlessly, while the suspension absorbs bumps superbly for a planted ride. Safety features like ABS, EBD, dual airbags in higher trims, and engine immobilizer provide reassurance, though service network limitations could be a concern. Interiors feel premium with adjustable steering, height-adjustable seats, and a 60:40 split rear fold for versatile space in a 5-seater package. ARAI mileage of 20.3kmpl keeps running costs low, ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking style over bland rivals. I recommend it for enthusiasts who prioritize driving dynamics and build quality, but test drive to ensure service availability in your area before committing—it's a driver's car that rewards with joy on every twisty road.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Fiat Punto's ex-showroom prices for key variants ranged from about ₹5.99 lakh for the base 1.2 petrol Active to ₹9.1 lakh for top diesel models like the Punto Evo, with the sporty Abarth Punto at around ₹9.67 lakh ex-showroom. On-road prices added insurance, registration, and taxes, pushing the base to roughly ₹6.8-7.5 lakh and top-end to ₹10.5-11.5 lakh depending on the city—Delhi on-road for Abarth was about ₹10.81 lakh, Mumbai around ₹11.45 lakh. As I see it, these prices positioned it competitively against Hyundai i20 or Maruti Swift, offering superior build and features like automatic climate control or LED tail lamps at similar costs. Value shines in diesel variants for long-term ownership, but factor in higher insurance due to Fiat's niche status. Post-2015 discontinuation, used Punto models fetch ₹2-5 lakh, a steal for its durability if serviced well. I advise negotiating used deals with full service history to maximize savings while enjoying premium hatch perks without premium pricing.

I clocked the Punto's 1.3 Multijet diesel at 20.3kmpl ARAI, translating to 17kmpl in mixed city-highway use on Indian roads. Opt for it if fuel bills dominate your budget—reliable efficiency aids buying decisions without frequent refills.
December 22, 2025
I rate the Fiat Punto's 1.3 Multijet diesel at 20.3kmpl ARAI and real-world 17.1kmpl city highly for India, with 45L tank enabling 800-900km highway range. Low diesel costs keep annual running under ₹80,000 for 15,000km, beating petrol rivals. Opt for it if mileage drives your decision—efficient torque aids economical driving without compromising fun.

Fiat has been in the mainstream automobile market for many decades and is nowadays making its presence felt in India.

Overview

Fiat has been in the mainstream automobile market for many decades and is nowadays making its presence felt in India. The Italian automobile major is considered as a major player across Europe and in India, though it has only a few models on the ground but even then those very models are in high demand. Amongst those, Fiat Punto and Linea are the primary highlights. Fiat Punto takes the pole position as the flagship hatchback of the Italian major whereas Linea takes charge of the flagship sedan. The exteriors have been designed in a stylish manner and the whole outlook gives a fluidic appeal. Fiat Punto comes with a belligerent front grille as well as an impressive rear fascia. We can say that the whole design is quite curvaceous and the 15’’ alloy wheels add glam to the style quotient of the car. Thus altogether Fiat has put up a good show in designing the exoskeleton of Punto which is the reason why the hatchback has received such an overwhelming response from the Indian hatchback-oriented enthusiasts.

Interior

The Italian say they have their own way of designing cars and making them the epitome of elegance. Fiat Punto's interiors are laden with loads of features starting with the dual-tone dashboard to the leather-finished steering wheel as well as the gear knob. The instrument cluster, gear knob and the pedals have all been strategically placed in order to make sure that not only the driver but the co-passenger can also sit in a relaxed position. The air-conditioning system in the car comes with automatic climate control feature that monitors the humidity inside the cabin and adjusts it to a temperature which makes the passengers feel comfy.

Music System

The steering wheel has been equipped with Blue & Me which is a set of audio controls. This is one of the first and most avant-garde features available only in Punto. Adding to this, Fiat Punto is laden with Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) which ensure that the car does not swerve off its path.
