General information and overview

The BMW X5 xDrive40i redefines mid-size luxury SUVs in India with its 3.0-litre straight-six turbo-petrol engine churning 381hp and 520Nm, mated to an 8-speed automatic for seamless shifts and 0-100kmph in 5.4 seconds. Standard air suspension adapts flawlessly to broken roads, lowering for corners to minimize body roll, while 21-inch alloys and M Sport styling—aggressive grille, LED headlights with crystal elements—turn heads. The cabin boasts a curved dual-display infotainment, power-adjustable ventilated seats with thigh support, panoramic sunroof, and four-zone climate control for family comfort. Rear space accommodates adults easily, with a quiet ride aided by UV-cut glass. Tech includes ADAS suite with adaptive cruise and lane keep, plus xOffroad modes for gravel or snow. At 2.2 tons, it handles like a sports sedan, backed by strong build quality. Priced from Rs 93.60 lakh ex-showroom, it's my pick for buyers prioritizing performance, luxury, and subtle off-road chops in one premium package.

I consider the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport Pro a benchmark luxury SUV tailored for India, featuring a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech producing 381 bhp and 520 Nm, mated to an eight-speed automatic and xDrive AWD for 0-100 kmph in 5.4 seconds. Standard adaptive air suspension ensures a plush ride over potholes, while the new xOffroad package with Sand, Rocks, Gravel, Snow modes and underbody protection handles light trails effortlessly. Exterior highlights include bold kidney grille, matrix LED lights, L-shaped taillamps, and 21-inch alloys with M Sport Pro black accents. The cabin impresses with premium leather, curved dual displays, ventilated seats, HUD, panoramic sunroof, and iDrive 8.5 supporting wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, BMW ID, and remote functions. Safety covers six-plus airbags, adaptive cruise, lane keep, and drive recorder. Spacious for five, it offers excellent thigh support, electronic adjustments, and a quiet drive even at 120 kmph. Locally made in Chennai, it's packed with features that make it ideal for Indian families craving performance, luxury, and versatility without compromises.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the BMW X5 xDrive40i to be a standout luxury SUV that masterfully blends exhilarating performance with everyday usability on Indian roads. Its 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivers 381hp and 520Nm of torque, propelling it from 0-100kmph in just 5.4 seconds, making highway overtakes effortless and stable even at high speeds up to 243kmph. The standard air suspension now smooths out pothole-ridden city streets and undulating highways brilliantly, while the new xOffroad package with modes like xSand and xRocks adds surprising versatility for occasional adventures. Inside, the curved display, premium leather seats with ventilation in M Sport Pro, and ambient lighting create a cockpit that's both tech-forward and supremely comfortable for family road trips. Safety shines with six airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and hands-free Highway Assist. Though rivals like the Audi Q7 offer plushness, the X5's playful handling and M Sport styling give it an edge for enthusiasts. At Rs 1.15 crore for the top diesel variant, it demands a premium, but I recommend it wholeheartedly for buyers seeking a dynamic, feature-packed SUV that elevates every drive without compromise.

I find the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport Pro an exceptional luxury SUV that masterfully blends thrilling performance with everyday usability in India. Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine, boosted by a 48V mild-hybrid system, delivers 381 bhp and 520 Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 kmph in just 5.4 seconds while feeling planted at high speeds thanks to adaptive air suspension and xDrive all-wheel drive. The refreshed design with adaptive matrix LED headlamps, 21-inch alloys, and M Sport Pro styling turns heads on Indian roads, and the xOffroad package with modes like Sand, Rocks, Gravel, and Snow adds surprising versatility for occasional adventures beyond highways. Inside, the premium cabin boasts a curved display, leather seats, ventilated fronts, HUD, and the latest iDrive with BMW ID and remote parking—perfect for family long drives from Delhi to Jaipur. Safety features like multiple airbags, lane assist, and attentiveness monitoring provide confidence in chaotic traffic. While it's not the cheapest, I believe its superior dynamics, tech-loaded interior, and refined ride quality justify every paisa for buyers seeking a do-it-all premium SUV that excels in performance, comfort, and subtle off-road prowess, making it my top pick over rivals.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The 2024 BMW X5 has received significant updates, including a revised exterior design with a new front bumper, grille, slimmer headlights, and updated taillights. The interior now features the BMW Curved Display and the iDrive 8.5 operating system. The standard turbocharged 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine now produces 375 horsepower and includes a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. I think these updates make the X5 look more modern and technologically advanced.
November 14, 2024
BMW has enhanced the power and efficiency of the 2024 X5, particularly in the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e model. This trim now boasts a total output of 483 horsepower, nearly 100 horsepower more than the previous model, and an increased electric-only range of 40 miles. The new engine uses the Miller combustion cycle for improved efficiency. I believe this boost in power and range makes the xDrive50e a compelling choice for those seeking both performance and fuel efficiency.
November 7, 2024
The 2024 BMW X5 features a new front fascia design, including narrower headlights with arrow-shaped LED running lights and a redesigned kidney grille that can illuminate. The lower fascia is larger with more detail, incorporating vertical vents for a wider stance. This new design gives the X5 a more aggressive yet elegant look.
October 25, 2024
BMW has introduced a more powerful hybrid powertrain for the 2024 X5 xDrive50e, which includes a revised turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine using the Miller combustion cycle and a more powerful electric motor. This results in better fuel economy and an extended EV driving range. I think this upgrade is a significant step forward in combining performance and sustainability.
September 20, 2024
The interior of the 2024 BMW X5 has been upgraded with a large, curved screen that combines the 12.3-inch driver display and 14.9-inch infotainment display. This new display has minimized physical controls, except for a volume knob and buttons for defrosters, and includes the classic iDrive controller. This modernization gives the X5 a high-tech vibe.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the BMW X5 xDrive40i starts at an ex-showroom price of around Rs 93.60 lakh, while the top-spec xDrive30d M Sport Pro commands Rs 1.15 crore ex-showroom following a recent Rs 2.5 lakh hike for added features like standard air suspension and the xOffroad package. On-road prices escalate significantly due to India's high taxes—expect Rs 1.10-1.15 crore for the base petrol in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, factoring in 28% GST, road tax (up to 13% in some states), insurance (Rs 3-4 lakh annually), and fastag fees; the diesel M Sport Pro can touch Rs 1.35-1.40 crore on-road. I view this pricing as justified for the segment, as the X5 undercuts flashier rivals like the Mercedes GLE in value while packing superior tech and dynamics—ventilated seats, HUD, and off-road modes now standard make it a smarter buy than before. Running costs are high with premium fuel and service at Rs 80,000-1 lakh yearly, but resale holds strong at 70-80% after three years, making it a solid investment for long-term luxury ownership.
December 13, 2025
I note the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport Pro starts at an ex-showroom price of around Rs 1.13 crore in major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai, reflecting its locally produced status at BMW's Chennai plant with premium updates like standard air suspension and xOffroad package. On-road prices climb to approximately Rs 1.29 crore, factoring in 12-15% road tax (higher in states like Karnataka or Kerala), insurance around Rs 4-5 lakh, RTO registration, fastag, and green cess—pushing totals higher in metros due to varying state levies. For instance, in Delhi, expect ex-showroom at Rs 1.13 crore leading to Rs 1.28-1.30 crore on-road, while Mumbai might add Rs 10,000 more from taxes. As someone who's evaluated many luxury SUVs, I see this pricing as competitive against the Audi Q7 or Mercedes GLE, especially with ventilated seats, HUD, and off-road modes now standard, offering better value than before. The mild price hike from feature additions is worthwhile for the enhanced capability and exclusivity; if running costs concern you, factor in 3-year/40,000 km warranty extensions at Rs 4-5 lakh. Ultimately, for discerning buyers, this investment delivers unmatched BMW engineering that holds strong resale value in India's premium market.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I observe the BMW X5 xDrive40i achieves 11-12kmpl on highways and around 9-10kmpl in city traffic, per real-world tests blending ePro mode for efficiency without sacrificing power. Diesel xDrive30d fares better at 14kmpl highway/10kmpl city. For mileage-conscious buyers, the petrol suits occasional runs but expect Rs 15-20 per km running costs with premium fuel; diesel edges out for savings on long hauls, making it ideal if fuel bills concern you over outright thrill.
December 13, 2025
I get real-world figures of 9-10 kmpl in city-highway mix for the xDrive40i petrol in India, with highways yielding up to 11-12 kmpl and city around 9 kmpl in Eco Pro mode, aided by the 48V mild-hybrid. Diesel xDrive30d fares better at 12-14 kmpl highways. For buying, diesel suits high runners to cut fuel bills on long trips, but petrol's refinement wins despite Rs 100/km running costs (petrol at Rs 100/litre)—still reasonable for its power, making it a smart pick if performance trumps pure economy.

BMW X5 was the first SUV launched by BMW globally. The car is now in its third generation and after a minor facelift, it’s ready to take on the other competitors including its biggest rival Audi Q7.

BMW X5 was the first SUV launched by BMW globally. The car is now in its third generation and after a minor facelift, it’s ready to take on the other competitors including its biggest rival Audi Q7.

Exterior

BMW has stick to their basics in terms of designing as except for the minor changes, nothing much has changed on this car. It shares its platform with the 5 series luxury sedan. Biggest changes include a new bumper with air inlets and LEDs in its headlights. The familiar radiator grille, round shaped fog lights and bonnet remains the same. The side profile remains intact but you do get to choose from 2 sizes of alloy wheels which slightly make a difference to its appearance. Except for the restyled tail lights, there are no major changes at the back of this car. BMW needs to bring some serious changes to this car as now it looks aged in comparison to many of its new rivals like Land Rover Evoque.

Interior

The interiors are of dual tone color with leather seat covers of beige color enhancing the aura inside. The new leather wrapped three spoke steering wheel looks funky than before. The plastic and the material used inside feels of top quality. This 5 seater car has very generous seats with optimum comfort. Legroom and headroom is quite adequate for the rear passengers. Rear passengers also get their own rear AC vents and centre armrest.

Comfort and Convenience

BMW X5 offers many features to give maximum comfort to its driver and the passengers. Driver seat is electrically adjustable which allows the driver to get in to the perfect position with an adjustable steering wheel for clear visibility. It has a dual zone automatic air conditioning with central locking, electrically adjustable and fold-able side mirrors. It also has Hill Descent control (HDC), rain sensing wipers and auto headlights with rear parking camera to assist you while parking it.

Dashboard and Storage

Dashboard of BMW X5 remains the same with similar high class wooden inserts and instrument panel. It has an air cooled glove box with door pockets and cup holders in front and rear centre armrest. It has decent boot capacity which can be increased by folding the rear seats.

Music System

BMW X5 has an audio system with six CD changer and 16 powerful speakers with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. It comes with steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls.

Engine and Gearbox

New BMW X5 is powered by a 2993cc, V6 diesel engine, which generates a maximum power output of 258 bhp with an increased torque output of 560 Nm. This engine is equipped with xDrive30d to enhance its performance. The new eight speed automatic transmission now replaces its old six speed transmission.

Acceleration and Performance

With new engines and gearbox, the performance of this car has improved significantly. Its new petrol unit takes just 5.5 seconds to reach 0-100km/hr. This engine can reach a top speed of 240km/hr. The diesel engine feels much responsive than before thanks to its eight speed gearbox which reduces the turbo lag and you don’t much have to wait for its power as the new gear ratios feel very proportionate. Refinement of this engine has also increased with its power and torque output. The car feels much relaxed in its high range with reaching a top speed of 210km/hr. The new gearbox reduces its rpms which makes it quicker than before and as a result of that it takes around 7.6 seconds to reach 100km/hour from standstill.

Mileage

Due to its heavy weight and powerful engine, the petrol version of this car will be able to return you a mileage of around 6-7km/ltr while BMW claims its diesel engine to be the most fuel efficient engine in its class. The 3.0L diesel engine is expected to give a fuel efficiency of around 8km/ltr. The new X5 is available in only diesel in India.

Safety Features

BMW X5 features 8 airbags for your safety with ESP and traction control in it. Remote locking, anti-theft alarm is standard safety features in it and there is additional reinforcement in the front, sides and rear of the body for extra protection at the time of collision.

Suspension and Braking

The suspension of this car favours our Indian roads as it takes most of the bumps without any kind of complain. BMW X5 uses ventilated disk brakes at it front with simple disks at the back. The braking system also has ABS with EBD.

Ride and Handling

BMW X5 has always been known for its plush ride on road as well as off road. It’s a perfect 4x4 and pleases you the way it handles. This two tone vehicle manages to shed its weight with its brilliant handling on road. Its suspension also holds it well around sharp corners and you experience minimal body roll.

Shades and Warranty

BMW X5 is available in ten shades. The company offers 2years/unlimited kilometres warranty on its cars.

Variants

BMW X5 is available in one variants: xDrive 30d diesel.

Verdict

BMW X5 is cheaper than its outgoing model by a good margin but it is expensive than many of its competitors. At this price, BMW is offering a powerful petrol engine but its design needs to be upgraded. Moreover its diesel engine still feels on the slower side if compared to other competitors. We won’t say it’s a complete value for money car but it’s quite considerable due to it’s on and off road capability despite its big size.
