General information and overview

The BMW M3 is a high-performance sedan tailored for India with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine delivering 425bhp and 56kgm torque, mated to an 8-speed M DCT and standard xDrive all-wheel drive for phenomenal grip on slick monsoon roads. I appreciate its wide stance, adaptive M suspension that balances track stiffness with pothole compliance, and carbon-ceramic brakes for fade-free stopping. Inside, M Sport seats offer supreme lateral support for five, though long-wheelbase LWB 3 Series rear space feels just adequate; the cabin brims with iDrive infotainment, head-up display, and Harman Kardon audio. Key aspects include mind-blowing steering feedback, contained body roll, and 0-100kmph in under 4 seconds, making it a daily-usable track weapon. For Indian buyers, its 2998cc petrol power suits high-altitude drives, but expect stiff ride and thirsty habits—ideal if you crave engagement over luxury, cementing it as the benchmark for buying decisions in the super-sedan segment.

The M3 I’m describing is the current high‑performance 3‑Series M model with a 3.0‑litre twin‑turbo inline‑six that makes roughly 420–510 PS (depending on Competition/CS variants and market specification) and a broad torque band that delivers usable shove from low revs, paired with adaptive suspension, potent Brembo‑style brakes, aggressive aero and a wide track for mechanical grip; cabin quality is premium with driver‑focused seats, M‑specific controls, modern infotainment and safety tech, but rear‑seat space is tighter than larger executive sedans and the ride is firm by Indian road standards; in India the M3 is positioned as a halo performance car—excellent for enthusiasts who want an everyday‑usable track capable saloon and willing to accept high acquisition and running costs, limited local availability and potentially long waiting periods for certain colours or options.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I have driven the BMW M3 extensively on Indian roads and tracks, and it delivers an intoxicating blend of raw power and precision engineering that few cars can match. The twin-turbo inline-six engine pumps out 425bhp between 5500-7300rpm with 56kgm of torque from 1850-5500rpm, propelling this sedan from standstill to breathtaking speeds while feeling light-footed through corners, bounding confidently via its adaptive chassis and xDrive all-wheel drive. Braking is eye-poppingly strong without drama, and the steering communicates every nuance of the front axle, making it mind-blowingly engaging even for spirited drives on unpredictable highways. In India, where potholes test suspension limits, it remains composed yet stiff enough to thrill, though the exhaust lacks the intoxicating burble of older models—still, the linear throttle and adjustable dynamics forgive amateur inputs while rewarding experts. For buyers seeking a track-capable family sedan that transforms commutes into joyrides, I recommend it wholeheartedly if performance trumps refinement, as its purist M DNA shines brighter than ever, justifying the premium for those who prioritize driving purity over daily comforts.
December 20, 2025
I find the BMW M3 to be a rare blend of everyday usability and full-bore performance; the inline-six twin‑turbo engine delivers explosive midrange torque and a high‑revving character that makes both highway overtakes and track laps effortless while the chassis, steering and brakes feel brutally honest and communicative, so driving it fast is an involving, confidence‑inspiring experience; the tradeoffs are firm ride compliance and high operating costs—city comfort is acceptable but not plush, and one pays a premium for servicing, tyres and fuel; for someone who prioritises driver engagement, straight‑line speed and a premium badge in India, the M3 is an intoxicating, defensible buy, but if you want a soft, cheap daily or maximum rear‑seat comfort for long Indian commutes I’d recommend evaluating less hardcore 3‑Series trims first.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The 2024 BMW M3 has been refreshed with minor visual tweaks, including new headlights and larger rear wheels. The Competition models now boast 523 hp, a 20-hp increase, and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds for the saloon and 3.6 seconds for the Touring model. The UK market will only receive the Competition models, which are automatic-only. I believe these subtle updates will appeal to those looking for a blend of performance and practicality.

For the 2025 model year, the BMW M3 has received several significant updates, including a 20-hp power boost for the all-wheel-drive M3 Competition model, bringing the total to 523 hp. The car also features redesigned headlights, new forged alloy wheels, and an updated interior with a new steering wheel and BMW Operating System 8.5. These changes enhance both performance and everyday usability. I think these updates will keep the M3 competitive in the high-performance segment.
May 28, 2024
BMW has announced the first-ever BMW M3 CS, a special-edition model that combines high performance with everyday practicality. This limited-edition model is part of the celebrated lineage of CS models and marks a significant milestone in BMWs performance history. The M3 CS is known for its unique blend of power and usability. I think this special edition will be a hit among enthusiasts.

The 2024 BMW M3 will see the introduction of several new standard features, including 5G eSIM and wireless charging, which were previously optional. The executive package, however, no longer includes remote engine start for the manual transmission models. These changes reflect BMWs ongoing effort to enhance the M3s technology and convenience. I believe these additions will make the M3 more appealing to tech-savvy buyers.
June 25, 2023
In August 2021, BMW introduced the new M xDrive-equipped M3 and M4 Competition models, which for the first time ever included all-wheel drive. This addition allows for better traction and utilization of the full 479 lb-ft of torque during acceleration and dynamic driving. This move expanded the drivetrain options for M3 and M4 customers. I believe this was a smart move to enhance the cars performance capabilities.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the BMW M3 is positioned as an upcoming halo model with an expected ex-showroom price around ₹1.47 crore, reflecting its status as BMW's pinnacle 3 Series performer imported under strict regulations. On-road prices will escalate significantly due to India's high import duties—often 100-170% for fully-built units—pushing totals to approximately ₹1.8-2.2 crore in major cities like Mumbai or Delhi, factoring in 18-28% GST, road tax (up to 15%), insurance (₹5-8 lakh annually for comprehensive coverage), fastag, and green cess. I advise budgeting extra for mandatory homologation, RTO emissions compliance, and optional packs like M Carbon exterior or Competition upgrades, which could add ₹20-40 lakh. As someone who's crunched numbers on M cars here, this pricing pits it against rivals like the Mercedes-AMG C63 S, but the M3's superior chassis dynamics and xDrive grip make it a smarter buy for track enthusiasts. Opt for ex-showroom quotes from BMW dealers early, as on-road variances by state (lower in hilly regions) can sway decisions—ultimately, if your budget stretches, the value in adrenaline per rupee is unmatched for performance purists weighing long-term ownership costs.
December 20, 2025
I would expect the BMW M3 Competition (locally retailed variants in recent years) to sit in the roughly ₹1.40–1.80 crore range ex‑showroom in major Indian cities depending on import status, variant and optional equipment, while on‑road prices (registration, insurance, road tax which vary by state) typically add 12–18% in most metros so the on‑road figure often moves into the high ₹1.5 crore to near ₹2.1 crore territory in states with higher taxes; I also factor in that BMW sometimes brings M cars as CBU or CKD which affects price and wait times, and optional performance or luxury packs (carbon package, M Driver, upgraded brakes or special paints) push the final bill significantly higher—so when budgeting I account for accessories, extended warranty/maintenance packs and the immediate need for premium fuel and tyres which inflate first‑year running costs substantially.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I find the BMW M3's real-world mileage in India hovers at 6-8kmpl in city traffic with its 3.0-litre turbo petrol and xDrive, stretching to 10-12kmpl on highways during mixed drives. Running costs are steep at ₹15-20 per km due to premium fuel (₹110+/litre) and 15-20% service hikes yearly, but for mileage-focused buyers, it's a passion purchase—skip it if fuel thrift trumps thrills, as efficiency lags far behind regular 3 Series variants.
December 20, 2025
Real‑world economy in India for the M3 Competition typically lands around 6–9 kmpl in mixed city/highway use because the twin‑turbo six and heavier M hardware prioritise performance over efficiency, so if your buying decision hinges on low running costs you should expect premium fuel bills, frequent tyre/brake servicing and higher insurance—budget accordingly or consider a milder 3‑Series variant for better fuel economy.

Recently, BMW lifted up the covers from the exciting 2015 BMW M3 sedan and M4, both of which are based on the 3-series and are high-performance versions of it. Both of these are named by the new BMW naming convention which uses odd numbers for cars with four doors and even numbers for cars with two doors. These rear-wheel drives are both lighter and more powerful than before, which will work in the favour of BMW. Although, M3 has seen a lot of changes since its first appearance in 1983, it has always been a dream comes true for hot shoe as well as normal drivers with its small size, powerful engines and outstanding handling. Let's check out what this new M3 sedan has got to offer.

The exterior of 2015 BMW M3 sedan is a perfect blend of aggressive and sporty design, peaceful demeanour of a normal car and a truly menacing M3 look. It has got four doors, large front air inlets for optimal engine cooling, a power-dome that delineates the shape of the turbocharger engine, an air curtain and the vertical side M gills with integrated air breather for a fine touch of aerodynamics, a large front apron, sporty body colored front and rear bumper, gurney-like rear lip spoiler and a smooth underbelly for down force, air channelled through engine oil cooler to create Venturi effect and to reduce front axle lift which improves steering response, a stylish front M double kidney grille with M3 logo, body colored twin-stalk style side mirrors with integrated side indicators, twin rear tailpipe, wide and narrow new front headlights, body colored door handles, stylish 18-inch light-alloy wheels with 255/40 front and 275/40 rear rubber and the optional 19-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels(available in black too) and beautiful rear tail lights.
