Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched in India in May 2005 with a 1.3 litre petrol engine. It received a setback when Government of India introduced BS IV (Bharat Stage) emission norms in 2010 due to which Maruti replaced its 1.3 L petrol engine with a 1.2-liter K-series engine. In august 2011 Maruti launched the third generation Swift with 1.2-liter K-series petrol and 1.3 L DDiS diesel engines. Swift is a premium hatchback car that is available in nine variants from which five runs on petrol engine and four on diesel. It has ground clearance of 170 mm and its fuelling capacity is 42 litres. The diesel engine of Swift is 1248cc DDiS (direct diesel injection system) engine that has four cylinders with each cylinder containing four valves making total no of valves to sixteen.

The chain drive timing system with auto tensioner gives precise valve timing and is maintenance-free for the entire life of the engine. It produces maximum power of 74 bhp at 4000 rpm that generates the maximum torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. The engine has fixed geometry turbo charger with inter-cooler that helps in keeping the engine temperature low at high speeds. The average mileage of the car with diesel engine is 22.9 kmpl. The Swift is 3850 mm (length), 1695 mm (width), 1530 mm (height) in dimensions with the wheelbase of 2430 mm. The kerb weight for Swift diesel varies between 1050-1080 kg and the gross weight is 1505 kg. The electrically powered and tilt steering gives the turning radius of 4.8 m and a comfortable driving position. Swift comes with 5-speed manual transmission with DSD (dry single disk) clutch.

The Swift petrol comes with 1197 cc with VVT (variable valve timing) K series engine that produces maximum power of 86 bhp at 6000 rpm and the torque produced is 114 Nm at 4000 rpm. This k-series DOHC (double overhead camshaft) engine has four cylinders and sixteen valves in total with multipoint fuel injection system. The kerb weight of petrol powered Swift varies between 960-990 kg and the gross weight is 1415 kg. The engine is specially designed with NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) in consideration. The Swift petrol gives an average mileage of 18.5 kmpl. The front suspension is McPherson strut and the rear wheels are provided with torsion beam suspension.

The new gen RBSS (rally based suspension system) are used in the car for better handling and smooth ride. The tyres of Swift are large and wide which are optimized for improved handling, fuel economy and NVH parameters. The internally and electrically adjustable ORVM with mounted side indicators along with rear and front fog lamps are useful features of the Swift. All the windows of the car are electrically controlled and the driver side window comes with auto down function. Other useful features of Swift include central door locking, key-less entry remote fuel lid opener and remote back door opener. This hatchback is available in six metallic shades named torque blue, pearl arctic white, silky silver, glistering grey, midnight black and blazing red.
