The Honda BR-V (2020) is a seven-seater compact SUV designed for families and those needing ample space and practicality. It is powered by a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, producing 117.3 bhp and 200 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The vehicle features a spacious cabin with three rows of seating, high ground clearance of 210 mm, and a boot space of 223 litres. Key features include keyless entry, automatic climate control with roof-mounted rear AC vents, and a comfortable three-way adjustable driver’s seat. The BR-V is known for its strong build quality, reliable engine, and widespread service network. While it lacks some modern features like a touchscreen infotainment system and rear parking camera, its focus on space, comfort, and low running costs makes it a practical choice for Indian families.

The Honda BR-V (2020) is a distinctly Indian-focused vehicle that cleverly combines SUV proportions with MPV functionality, creating a practical solution for modern Indian families. Powered by a 1.5-litre, 1498cc i-DTEC diesel engine producing 100 hp and 200 Nm of torque, it pairs with a six-speed manual transmission to deliver smooth performance across diverse road conditions. The vehicle features three rows of comfortable seating with adequate legroom and headroom, though the third row works best for children or short journeys. A 223-litre boot space provides reasonable cargo capacity when the third row isn't in use, while the 210mm ground clearance handles Indian road imperfections effectively. The compact dimensions make it surprisingly easy to maneuver in congested city traffic, yet it maintains stability during highway cruises. Inside, you'll find automatic climate control with roof-mounted rear AC vents, keyless entry, and a comfortable driving position. The kerb weight of 1306 kg keeps the vehicle relatively light, contributing to the excellent fuel efficiency. While some premium features like touchscreen audio and automatic parking sensors are absent, the overall build quality reflects Honda's commitment to reliability, backed by India's extensive Honda service network.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Honda BR-V (2020) stands out in the Indian compact SUV segment for its practicality and comfort, especially for families needing a seven-seater. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine delivers strong torque and smooth performance, making it suitable for both city commutes and highway drives. The cabin is spacious, with generous legroom and headroom across all three rows, and the high ground clearance helps tackle rough roads with ease. The build quality is solid, and the service network is widespread, which adds to ownership convenience. However, the BR-V feels dated in terms of features, missing out on modern touches like a touchscreen infotainment system and rear parking camera. The ride is firm, which aids handling but can be a bit harsh on bad roads. For buyers prioritising space, reliability, and low running costs over cutting-edge tech, the BR-V remains a compelling choice.

The Honda BR-V (2020) represents a compelling proposition for Indian buyers seeking a practical seven-seater vehicle that doesn't compromise on comfort or efficiency. I've found that this car-like SUV successfully bridges the gap between MPV practicality and SUV capability, making it ideal for families navigating both city traffic and highway journeys. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine delivers respectable performance with 117.3 bhp and strong torque output, while the spacious cabin with three rows of seating accommodates passengers and luggage with ease. What sets this vehicle apart is its impressive fuel efficiency combined with Honda's renowned reliability and extensive service network across India. The advanced climate control system, keyless entry, and three-way adjustable driver's seat enhance the ownership experience. However, I must note that the absence of modern touchscreen infotainment and parking sensors feels like missed opportunities at this price point. Ground clearance of 210mm proves sufficient for Indian road conditions, and the compact build ensures maneuverability in congested urban areas. Overall, the BR-V delivers genuine value for money and remains a solid choice for middle-class Indian families prioritizing practicality, comfort, and running economy over cutting-edge features.

Pricing details and changes

The Honda BR-V (2020) was available in India with an ex-showroom price ranging from approximately Rs. 9.61 lakh to Rs. 13.90 lakh, depending on the variant. On-road prices, including registration, insurance, and other charges, would typically be around Rs. 11 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh, varying by state and city. This pricing positioned the BR-V as a premium offering in the compact SUV segment, competing with rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The higher price tag is justified by its spacious cabin, strong diesel engine, and Honda’s reputation for reliability. However, the lack of modern features and the firm ride may deter buyers looking for a more feature-rich or comfortable experience. For those seeking a practical, reliable, and spacious seven-seater, the BR-V offers good value, especially if purchased at a discount or with additional incentives.
December 5, 2025
The Honda BR-V (2020) diesel variant was priced at approximately Rs 13,82,900 ex-showroom in Delhi, though this price varied across different regions in India. When calculating on-road costs, buyers should factor in additional expenses including registration, insurance, road tax, and dealer charges, which typically push the total investment to around Rs 15-16 lakh depending on the state of purchase. I consider this pricing highly competitive within the seven-seater compact SUV segment, especially when you factor in the vehicle's fuel efficiency and durability. The ex-showroom price offered genuine value considering the spacious interior, reliable diesel engine, and Honda's strong after-sales support throughout India. It's worth noting that the BR-V has been discontinued, so interested buyers must explore the used vehicle market where prices have adjusted based on age, mileage, and condition. From a cost-of-ownership perspective, the on-road pricing remains reasonable given the expected low maintenance costs typical of Honda vehicles and the strong resale value in the Indian used car market. This makes it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers who value long-term economy.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Honda BR-V (2020) diesel variant delivers an ARAI-certified mileage of 21.90 kmpl, which translates to real-world figures of around 18-20 kmpl in mixed city and highway driving. This makes it one of the most fuel-efficient seven-seaters in its segment, ideal for buyers concerned about running costs. The diesel engine’s strong torque and efficient transmission contribute to its low fuel consumption, even with a full load of passengers. For those prioritising mileage and low maintenance, the BR-V is a solid choice, offering reliable performance and cost-effective ownership.
December 5, 2025
The Honda BR-V diesel achieves an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 21.90 kmpl, which I find genuinely impressive for a seven-seater vehicle of this size and weight. In real-world driving conditions across Indian roads, owners consistently report mileage ranging between 15-20 kmpl, depending on driving habits, traffic conditions, and maintenance practices. I emphasize that maintaining steady speeds and avoiding aggressive acceleration helps achieve figures closer to the certified rating. City driving typically yields lower mileage around 15-16 kmpl, while highway cruising can push it towards 19-20 kmpl. The 42-litre fuel tank capacity ensures a reasonable driving range of approximately 700-900 km on a full tank, reducing frequent refueling stops during long journeys. For Indian buyers concerned about running costs, this efficiency directly translates to lower fuel expenses compared to petrol alternatives or competitors in this segment, making it highly economical for families covering substantial monthly distances.

Honda's long awaited answer to the compact SUV's of India has arrived to the scene. Named as the BR-V, the newcomer from Honda carries a new face which is said to be inspired from the new generation Honda cars. The BR-V is an exception from all the other compact termed products in India as it carries the 2 extra third row seats for the ease of carrying a full mid sized family of India.

Exterior

The BR-V resembles a tough SUV from its first front look while it's rear feels modernized with a long reflector running across it's width, connecting the two taillights at the rear. The side profile is a bit mild and resembles that of the Honda Mobilio, feeling more like an overstretched car with moderate width and more length than required. The same long length makes it the longest in it's class and also hosts the 7 seat arrangement on the BR-V. For the looks, Honda has used the City inspired thick chrome slat at the front while the headlights have been made with the bigger dimensions. Yet again, the thick front end makes the lights feel perfect whereas the silver skid plate improves the overall imposing face of the car.

The air-dam sizes are moderate while the chrome around the oval fog lamps is the best available and decent setup for the car of its class. Roof rails add more muscle to the overall package while their silver finish makes than feel a bit urban at every angle. The front, rear and side glass windows are large, making the car feel airy and less SUV-ish than ever. While the people inside won't get bored with this but the feel of a people carrier would not be justified by this step. BR-V could have felt much much better if it would have been kept 5 seater with lesser length and a bit of more width. The alloy wheel design is very sporty and comes as a rescue to the negative impacts of the first look errors on the car.

Dimensions & Weight

Honda BR-V comes with exciting length of 4453 mm, width of 1735 mm and 1666 mm of height. The wheelbase stands at 2662 mm while the ground clearance is a good 210 mm for urban adventures. The car rides on 16-inch wheels and the fuel tank on the car measures 42 liters.

Interior

The inside of the BR-V resembles that of the recently launched 2016 Amaze. The Beige goes missing on the BR-V, raising its sports character with an all Black layout. The next change is noticed with a different steering wheel, which has been carried over from the international Jazz variant. The silver decoration on the wheel matches to that of the air vent corners and the line running cleanly into the dashboard. Even the door handles have been given a silver treatment for a better overall match. Honda BR-V misses on an integral part of the new generation cars, a touchscreen infotainment system. Rather, they use the Honda Amaze sourced player for the purpose.

The seats offer a good black view while also provides a comfortable ride with their adequate length and width. Second row comes with excellent legroom and also provides a perfectly placed arm rest in the center seat. The availability of adjustable headrests in the third row makes it an interesting deal whereas legroom is restricted, offering a good seat position for person up to the height of 5 feet 6 inches only. Thigh support goes mysteriously missing as space becomes limited while being in the third row. You still have a decent amount of boot space after all the 7 seats in their actual place.

Instrument Console

The new BR-V uses the same instrument console as the new Honda Amaze. The three pod instrument console gets a speedometer in the center pod while the one's on the left and right are smaller in size. The left one carries an analogue tachometer while the one on the left is a circular screen with everything else like fuel gauge, temperature, odometer and trip-meter.

Engine & Gearbox

The Honda BR-V is being offered with an option of a powerful petrol as well as a fuel efficient diesel engine. This makes the car good for both fuel preferences and also caters a wide audience. The petrol motor on the car is a 1497 cc, 4-cylinder motor producing 119 PS and 145 Nm of torque. The car comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, a first time option in Honda petrol cars of India. The CVT is also available on the new BR-V petrol version. The best part of the CVT comes when you shift with paddle shifter as they are flawless and feels good to operate within it's seven ratios.

The diesel motor on the car is the same 1498 cc, 4-cylinder engine producing 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and returns a company claimed mileage of 21.90 kmpl.

Brakes& Suspension

The car comes with front ventilated disc brakes while the rear brakes are drum units on the new BR-V. It is being offered with ABS as standard on the diesel variant while only on top variants on the petrol engine. The car comes with McPherson Strut with coil springs as the front suspension while the rear uses torsion beam with coils springs for the suspension duties.

Comfort & Safety

When it comes to big cars, the worst part can be experienced with it's loading and unloading part, whether it be people or the luggage in every case. The restricted height of the car makes ingress and egress as comfortable as possible while the lower back door lip facilitates easy movement of luggage inside and outside the vehicle. The infotainment system provides Bluetooth telephony and wireless music playback.

Push start button, rear air conditioning vents, automatic climate control and steering mounted controls make the car fully expressive when it comes to comfort and relaxed riding. The car comes wrapped in leather on its topmost trim. The safety is handled by the availability of dual front airbags from the base variant itself. ABS helps in avoiding mishaps on non ideal roads while the strong presence of the car with it's excellent chassis makes it safe in case of sudden collisions.

Shades & Variants

The car comes in 6 shades namely Carnelian Red Pearl, Orchid White Pearl, Urban Titanium Metallic, Taffeta White, Golden Brown Metallic and Alabaster Silver Metallic while the variants available on the same are E, S, V and VX.

Ex-showroom Price

The all new Honda BR-V has been priced at INR 8,75,000 for the base petrol variant while it's topmost diesel variant costs INR 12,90,000. It mixes the comfort of a sedan with the practicality of an urban SUV.
