Toyota Unveils 2024 Hilux Facelift with Mild Hybrid Diesel

The 2024 Toyota Hilux has been revealed for the global market, indicating a potential launch in India in the near future. To stay competitive, especially against rivals like the Ford Ranger in some places, the eighth-generation model has undergone three successive facelifts, with the main goals being to increase its appeal and technical developments.

Redesigned Front Fascia

A significant update to the 2024 Hilux is its redesigned front fascia, characterized by a more sculpted bumper and a new octagonal grille, giving it a more rugged appearance. Interestingly, the Australian variant of the Hilux showcases distinct styling elements compared to its Japanese and European counterparts. Depending on the trim level, variations include different grille and bumper finishes, with higher-spec models boasting additional features such as dark-tinted LEDs and gloss-black accents.

Introduction of Mild-Hybrid Technology

One of the standout features of the 2024 model is the introduction of mild-hybrid technology to the 2.8-litre diesel engine. This 48-volt system, available on select trims, integrates an electric motor/generator and a small lithium battery, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise levels. Although the power output remains unchanged, Toyota claims a notable enhancement in efficiency, with fuel economy gains ranging from 6-10% depending on the trim level.

Enhanced Equipment

In terms of equipment, the 2024 Hilux sees upgrades across various trims with new additions such as parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, smart entry/start, and wireless charging.

Price Adjustments and Availability

The updated Hilux lineup witnesses slight increases in pricing compared to the previous model year, particularly for trims equipped with the new mild-hybrid system. It is scheduled to be available in Australian showrooms from March 2024. In India, it is expected to be introduced by the end of the year.

Temporary Suspension of Deliveries in India

It's important to note that Toyota has temporarily suspended deliveries of the Hilux, along with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner models in India. The diesel engines that drive these vehicles underwent certification testing for horsepower output but the results showed variations that prompted this decision.
