Sub 4m SUV Sales Feb 2024 Overview

The sub-4m SUV segment in India witnessed significant activity in February 2024 with a total of 1,12,110 units sold. This segment includes a new breed of sub-4m SUVs measuring around 3.8m in length alongside classic sub-4m SUVs offering consumers a wide range of options. Tata Motors emerged as the leader in this segment followed by Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and Renault.

Tata Motors Leads the Way

Tata Motors led the sub-4m SUV sales in February 2024, selling 32,833 units with a market share of 29.29%. The Tata Punch and Punch EV together recorded 18,438 units, showing a 65.08% year-on-year growth and a 2.56% month-on-month growth. Maruti Suzuki Brezza followed closely with 15,765 units sold, making it the best-selling sub-4m SUV in terms of length, beating Tata Nexon.

Strong Performances and Market Trends

Tata Nexon and Nexon EV together accounted for 14,395 units, showing a 3.46% year-on-year growth. Maruti Fronx sold 14,168 units with a 3.85% month-on-month growth. The Mahindra Bolero, the best-selling ladder-frame RWD sub-4m SUV, sold 10,113 units, showing a 3.38% year-on-year and a 1.50% month-on-month growth.

Performance of Other Brands

Kia Sonet sold 9,102 units, experiencing a 7.46% year-on-year decline and a 21.06% month-on-month decline. Hyundai Venue and Exter together sold 8,393 and 7,582 units respectively, both experiencing declines. Mahindra sold 5,812 Thar units, registering 16.15% year-on-year growth and a 4.08% month-on-month decline.

Other Notable Performances

The XUV300 by Mahindra saw 4,218 units sold, with 10.74% year-on-year growth but a 12.44% month-on-month decline. Nissan and Renault sold 2,755 Magnite and 1,047 Kigers respectively. Maruti Suzuki Jimny, though the least-selling sub-4m SUV, saw a significant increase in sales, almost doubling from the previous month to 322 units.

Overall Market Trends

In total, the sub-4m SUV segment witnessed a 34.61% year-on-year gain, despite a 6.82% month-on-month decline indicating a strong and dynamic market for these vehicles in India. Offering a range of options for customers across various price ranges and amenities, this category remains a crucial arena for manufacturers. To maintain their lead in this fiercely competitive market manufacturers are expected to offer more cutting-edge features at reasonable prices as the competition heats up.
