Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) Revolution
Maruti Suzuki introduced the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) system in 2014, a groundbreaking innovation. Using this method, a conventional manual gearbox is essentially transformed into an automated one by automating gear changes and clutch movements. The difference in cost between manual and automatic gearboxes has largely been closed thanks to AMT.
Breakdown of Automatic Transmission Sales
Maruti Suzuki provides several types of automatic transmissions to suit various customer needs. Their data shows that AMT is the most popular choice, with a remarkable 65% of all automatic cars sold falling into this category. Torque converter-equipped models make up 27% of their automatic sales, and the more advanced e-CVT represents 8% of the total.
Consumer Preferences Across Showrooms
Maruti Suzuki has observed differences in consumer preferences between their Arena and Nexa showrooms. Arena customers tend to opt for automatic transmissions in mid-range car variants, while Nexa customers favor higher trim levels for their automatic cars. This data reveals that Nexa outlets contribute a significant 58% of all automatic sales, while Arena showrooms make up the remaining 42%.
Extensive Range of Automatic Models
Maruti Suzuki has made automatic transmissions accessible across a wide range of their car models. This includes AMT options in cars like Alto K-10, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Ignis, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, and Fronx. Additionally, the 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission is available in the Jimny and Ciaz. For more advanced driving experiences, Maruti Suzuki offers a 6-speed torque converter automatic with paddle shifters in models like the Fronx Turbo, Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, and Grand Vitara. Furthermore, their e-CVT is available in strong-hybrid variants of the Grand Vitara and the Invicto.
Diversification of Automatic Transmission Offerings
From initially introducing the AMT technology to the market, Maruti Suzuki has expanded its automatic transmission offerings significantly. In order to meet a wide range of preferences and needs, they currently offer consumers four different types of automatic gearboxes across a total of 16 different car models. The success of Maruti Suzuki in the Indian automotive market can be directly attributed to this diversification.
