India Seeks Five More Lithium Blocks in Argentina: What It Means for EV Supply

India is seeking access to five more lithium blocks in Argentina as it works to strengthen the supply chain for electric-vehicle batteries and other clean-energy technologies. The development was reported from comments by Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy.

The wording matters: the five additional blocks are under discussion, not acquired. They are separate from five lithium brine blocks in Argentina for which the state-owned Khanij Bidesh India Limited, or KABIL, already holds exploration and development rights.

The effect on vehicle prices will therefore depend on the entire chain, not simply the number of blocks.

The report also links overseas resource strategy with domestic recycling and processing. A proposed ₹1,500 crore critical-mineral recycling incentive had 58 applicants shortlisted in its first phase, while locations for processing plants were being discussed across several states. Final awards and all four plants should not be treated as completed.

What buyers should take away

This is a long-term industrial development rather than an immediate change to EV prices or availability. Successful exploration and processing could improve resilience and localisation over time, while recycling could reduce dependence on newly mined material.

The next evidence to watch is a signed agreement for the additional blocks, exploration results, investment decisions and timelines for domestic processing. Until then, the new five-block plan remains a minister-attributed negotiation.
