How does the 8C compare to modern Alfas?

While the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione from 2007 to 2010 is a different era to Alfa Romeo’s current lineup. The 8C was a limited production GT car, with high performance, and modern Alfas like the Giulia and Stelvio are aimed at competing in mainstream luxury segments. Powered by a naturally aspirated V8 and carbon fiber body against turbocharged engines and more conventional materials found in current models. Both old and new are committed to style and driving pleasure, however. Comparing these Alfa Romeos prompts examination of the brand’s maturation, the sacrifice of exclusivity for mass appeal, and if any trace of 8C spirit remains in the current model range. It also encourages discussion about where Alfa Romeo is headed in the future and whether we’ll see another halo car such as the 8C in the coming years.

The modern Alfas are in a different league to the 8C. The new stuff is more mainstream luxury, while it's a proper exotic. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is a beast, but it doesn't have the same special sauce as the 8C, don't get me wrong.

In fact I think modern Alfas are better in many ways. The Quadrifoglio models are proper performance cars, and they're more usable, just as stylish. But the 8C is gorgeous, and it's more like a rolling sculpture than a driver's car.

It's apples and oranges, really. That is to say, the 8C was a halo car, a statement piece. Alfas are trying to compete with BMW and Mercedes in modern times. The two have their merits, but I’d miss the boldness of something like the 8C in the current lineup.

The modern Alfas could run, so the 8C walked. Alfa was put back on the map for performance and style. They're not as exotic as the new cars, but they are carrying that torch of driving pleasure and Italian flair.

I would say cars like the Giulia GTA are the spirit of the 8C. In a more modern, usable package, it’s got that same sense of occasion. It's not that Alfa has lost its mojo, it's just evolved.

It's more special, it feels more Alfa Romeo if that makes sense. Great cars, the modern Alfas, but they feel a bit more... normal? The 8C was unapologetically Italian and unapologetically quirky. I miss that.

The comparison I think shows how far Alfa has come. The 8C was stunning but flawed. Alfas are now genuinely competitive with the German brands. It's a different way, but I think it worked out.
