Could the Yamaha RD350 succeed in today’s market?
In recent years, there has been an idea of bringing classic motorcycle models back to life with new technology. This revival of a cult and legendary bike seems like a prime candidate for such a revival; the Yamaha RD350. But, given the current environmentally conscious market, bringing a two stroke street bike back is quite difficult. Since the era of the RD350, emission regulations have become much stricter, and two stroke engines are notoriously difficult to make compliant. Also, the motorcycle market has changed, and some segments like adventure bikes or neo retos have developed. Any modern RD350 would have to meet the expectations of today’s performance, along with the requirements of today’s regulations. Here, we question whether this oft celebrated archetype of transportation could be engineered for the 21st century, and if so, whether it’s even possible.
Absolutely! Retro styled bikes are a big market. It’d sell like hotcakes if they could make it emissions compliant.
No way. Street use for two-strokes is dead. Maybe it would make sense as a track only bike but it wouldn’t be the same as the original RD350.
If they did it right, it could work. Use the styling, but with a modern four stroke engine of similar power characteristics.
But I would love to see it. What would probably be a niche product, the development costs would be huge.
They should do it! But make it electric. Picture an electric bike with the soul of the RD350; instant torque, lightweight and simple.
It could succeed, but it wouldn’t be a true RD350. That two stroke engine was the magic and you can't do that with modern tech.
Why not? Kawasaki brought back the Z900RS. I bet Yamaha would be popular if they did something similar with RD350 spirit.
