I honestly think the bike is pretty perfect stock. For looks, maybe some bar-end mirrors, but performance-wise, it doesn’t need much.

Aggressive riding is the weak point of the suspension. If you're hitting the track, then a set of aftermarket shocks makes a world of difference.

Be careful with ECU tuning. I’ve heard horror stories about people bricking their bikes. If you are going to tinker with a KTM, stick with reputable tuners who know KTMs.

If your bike didn't come with a quickshifter, it's a must-have mod. It totally changes the way you ride.

I'm all about practicality. Some soft luggage and a good windscreen make the 890 into a surprisingly capable sport tourer.
The KTM Duke 890—is it too much bike for newer riders, or can they handle it?

It’s not a beginner bike, that’s for sure, but I think an intermediate rider could ride it. It's more forgiving than you'd expect with the electronics.

No way, man. Go with something smaller and then build up from there. A 890 has far too much power for someone that is still learning the basics.

I began on an 890, no regrets. I just had to exercise some self-control and really focus on building good habits.

It depends on the rider. It might work if you're mature enough to resist the urge to go full hooligan. It's a lot of bike to learn on.

It's more manageable than you would think. It’s tamed down quite a bit in rain mode. I’d suggest at least a season on something smaller still.

Some new riders have done fine on 890s, and some experienced riders have gotten themselves in over their heads. It’s less about the bike and more about the person.

Why not compromise and get a 390 or 690? They are still plenty fun, but they won’t get you into trouble as much as you learn.

The 890 isn’t a huge reach if you’ve got some dirt bike experience. It’s just more power on tap, but the fundamentals are the same.

I teach new riders and wouldn't recommend the 890 to start. It’s too much of a risk for too many things to go wrong before good habits are formed.
Is it worth worrying about reliability on the KTM Duke 890?

Absolutely worth it! I've had my 890 over a year now with zero issues, and it's been a blast. It's unreal how it handles and how addictive the power delivery is. You just have to stay on top of the maintenance.

No way, man. Mine were nothing but problems. It spent more time at the dealer than on the road. Go Japanese and save yourself the headache.

It's a toss-up. I've had mine rock solid, but I know others who've had issues. If you’re willing to risk it for the incredible riding experience, then go for it. Just get a good warranty.

It depends on what you expect. But if you want a bike as reliable as a hammer, look elsewhere. If you can live with a bit of character (and maybe some quirks), the 890 is hard to beat for sheer fun.
Is it worth worrying about reliability on the KTM Duke 890?

I really believe that the reliability issue is blown out of proportion. Most appear to be from early production runs. The newer models have solved a lot of those problems.

It's all about perspective. You might have more issues than a Japanese bike, but the ride is totally another level. I think it’s worth the trade-off for me.
