If you can afford it, the R is the one that I would recommend. You will not use all the features right now, but you will enjoy them when you are good.

Reliability is overrated. If something goes wrong with the 890 R, you won't care; it's just so much fun.

With Japanese bikes, I never had any problems with my 890 R. But it's frustrating, and the riding experience makes up for it.

Modern KTMs are pretty solid. There is a much smaller gap in reliability than there used to be.

On my 890 R I’ve done 500-mile days. It’s not a Gold Wing, but with the right mods, it’s surprisingly comfortable.

It's 70% there for touring, I'd say. For most people, good enough, but hardcore tourers want something else.

Wind protection is a real issue at high speeds. It’s more of a canyon carver than a true track weapon.

On my 890 R, I've embarrassed plenty of sportbike riders. The rider is all that matters, not the fairing.

It's a jack of all trades, but master of none. Good on track, but not great. But it’s more fun than most bikes you’ll find out there.
